Team Nova Scotia Coach Selection Criteria
Eligibility
1. Must be a Competition Development Coach or Level 3 certified no later than 90 days prior to
the start of the event.
2. Must be members in good standing with Archery Nova Scotia and Archery Canada
3. To be considered eligible for selection, coaches must submit their coaching resume and a one
page letter denoting their desire to coach Team Nova Scotia. All Team Nova Scotia coaching
positions will be posted to the AANS website and Facebook page. All applications submitted past
the posted deadlines will not be considered.
4. Applicants must be willing to provide a Criminal Record check with vulnerable sector check.
5. All applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
6. Follow the roles and responsibilities as defined below.
Coach Selection
1. Coaches who meet Eligibility criteria as listed above and are the coach of record of a
selected team archer will be considered first. Coaches will be ranked highest to lowest
based on the total number of athletes the coach has on the team and that she/he is coach
of record for.
2. In the event the there are no applicants who meet the Eligibility criteria, the coach will be
provisionally nominated for selection from the available applicants. Coaches will be ranked
highest to lowest based first on the highest level NCCP they have obtained and second on
the total number of athletes the coach has on the team and that she/he is the coach of
record for. The coach can only be officially named to the team once a request for exemption
is granted from the Archery Nova Scotia Board of Directors and/or the Host Society. Please
note a coach can only receive an exemption once, so if a coach was given an exemption at a
previous Canada Games, she/he will not be granted another exemption.
3. A selected coach needs to ensure their availability to represent Team Nova Scotia
throughout the event’s training camp and competition. Applicants should not submit for a
coaching position if this commitment cannot be made.
4. The Archery Nova Scotia Board of Directors has the right to refuse any applicant without
reason.
Role
The Team Nova Scotia Coach is to ensure the successful preparation, participation, and performance of
the athletes at major competitions. It is expected that the coach will at all times conduct herself/himself
in a manner that shows a positive image of the province and Archery Nova Scotia. The coach must be a
role model for the team by demonstrating:
• A desire of competitive performance that will enable an athlete’s best performance
• Good sportsmanship & spirit of fair play
• Co-operation & friendship
• Respect for others
• Respect and adherence to the rules and regulations established by the Host and Team
Nova Scotia
• Team Spirit
Responsibilities
• Familiarize yourself with the Host Society’s rules/technical package for the event.
• Work with the Provincial Coach Coordinator to gather information and assess the strength
and weaknesses of the athletes selected to the team.
• Work with the Provincial Coach Coordinator to select individuals for team competitions at the
event. The Head Coach has final say for all Team Nova Scotia entries for team competitions at an
event.
• Ensure that all athletes and their parents are aware of the Archery Nova Scotia Code of
Conduct.
• Work with Provincial Coach Coordinator to assess and assign disciplinary action based on
Archery Nova Scotia guidelines and athlete code of conduct for poor athlete behaviour.
• Be aware of deadlines in regards to participant registration, uniform ordering, etc.;
• Assist the Provincial Coach Coordinator with the administration of the team including
registration, uniform allocation, finances and transportation;
• Lead team meetings with athletes, develop team spirit during training camps and the event.
• Be open to constructive feedback provided by the Provincial Coach Coordinator, Archery Nova
Scotia Board and the athletes.
• Work with the Provincial Coach Coordinator and athletes in planning practice schedule and
team activities at the event.
• Lead daily athlete briefing and debrief sessions.
• Attends all pertinent meetings leading up to the event and all coaches’ meetings.
• Enforce dress code for athletes while at training camps and the event.
• Determine and communicate team departure times while at the event.
• Participate in an anti-doping and drug-testing procedures and information sessions at the
event.
• Assist the host society with accreditation and accommodation procedures as required.
• Adhere to requests from the Provincial Coach Coordinator or Archery Nova Scotia Board.
• Must help chaperone and look after the athletes while at the event.
• Coach, manage and prepare athletes for maximum performance at the event both on and off
the field in a fair and sportsman-like manner.
• Be punctual for competitive events.
• Aide by the rules, regulations and policies of the Host Society.
• Take responsibility for the conduct of the athletes and be responsible for team discipline
during the event and while traveling to and from the event.
• Administer discipline for minor conduct infractions.
• report to the Provincial Coach Coordinator or Archery Nova Scotia Board daily while at the
event.
• Attend Team Nova Scotia official activities and ceremonies and ensure that the team
participates in all of the Host Society’s official functions including opening ceremonies, sport
opening ceremony and all other technical meetings, practices and competitions for their sport.
• Provide input and feedback to the Provincial Coach Coordinator regarding the Games.
• Report any major conduct infractions immediately to the Provincial Coach Coordinator and
Archery Nova Scotia Board.
• Ensure that athletes have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
• Complete any follow up reports requested by Archery Nova Scotia or the Host Society.
Unforeseen Circumstances
In the event of unforeseen or unusual circumstances, as determined by the Archery Nova Scotia Board
of Directors, the committee shall have full discretion to resolve the matter as it sees fit, taking into
account factors and circumstances that it deems relevant.
Changes to this Document
Archery Nova Scotia Board reserves the right to make changes to this document at its discretion. Any
changes to this document shall be published on the website, www.aans.ca.
Appeals
Appeals from any decision of the Selection Committee shall be as permitted in the AANS Appeals Policy.
Selection Committee
There will be 3 person selection committee made up of the Archery Nova Scotia President, the Archery
Nova Scotia VP of High Performance and the Provincial Coach Coordinator. If the AANS President or VP
are applicants for the position they shall be replaced on the selection committee by the AANS VP of
Target. If she/he is unable then any AANS Board member may be asked to fill the position.
