Overview of FLL Program
• FIRST = For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology
• Inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and
technology

FIRST Lego League (FLL) : 9 – 14 year olds
Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL): 6 to 9 year-olds

Coaches Promise
• The children come first.
• The children do the work.
• The team is:
– Composed of ten or fewer members and all team members participate
on only one FLL team
– Team members no older the 14 on January 1st of the Challenge year
(2011)
– Registered as an official FLL team
• Maintain communications with FLL , read and relay all aspects of
FLL guidelines and rules to the team, other coaches, volunteers and
parents
• Encourage team members, other coaches, volunteers, parents and
team supports to develop and practice a set of FLL Core Values that
reflects FIRST’s goal to change culture in a positive way by inspiring
other through the team’s actions and words.
The Challenge
The Food Factor Challenge give teams opportunity to explore the topic of
food safety and examine the possible points of contamination that our
food encounters – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsafe
processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage –
then find ways to prevent or combat these contaminates. Teams will
build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO®
MINDSTORMS® NXT to solve a set of Food Safety missions as well as
research, develop, and share their innovative food safety
solutions. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s set
of Core Values.

OSLS Team Specifics

Application and Team Selection
– Rules state 10 team members maximum for competition
– Core team selection by early July
– Non-core team members may participate during weekly meetings

Post Selection
– Take the team pledge
– Annual membership fee:

Core Team members: $50
Participants: $25
– Optional summer workshops and team building meetings
– Official team meetings begin at the beginning of the school year

Participation Requirements
– Official 2 hour weekly team meeting -> Wednesday after school
– Recommend additional meetings as needed to complete the project and robot prep
– Tournaments / Competitions (Saturdays)

Team Organization and Rules
– Organized by students with coaches help
– Meeting time is not play time (Just like class, leave video games, phone and other distractions
at home)
OSLS Team Specifics (Cont)
• Finances
– SPAWAR STEM Outreach Program has already provided $700 (used to
pay FLL team registration and buy NXT robot kit)
– Team Fee will be used to cover other expenses (Shirts, local
completion)
– Any remaining funds will be rolled over to next years team
• Parent Participation / Volunteers (Positions Open!)

Remember the team is require to do “all” the project and robot work,
we are just there to support!
– Would like to limit parent participation at official team meetings so
the students don’t feel pressured by too many adults.
