SOUPER BOWL OF CARING SKIT TITLE: Real TV, Real Hunger! SUBMITTED BY: John P. Trump, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 9 speaking roles: Mark, Jan, Announcer 1, Announcer 2, Harry, Alice, Quarterback, Player and Reporter(s) COSTUMES: Announcers/reports in suits. Players in jersey. LENGTH: 8-10 +minutes. TIME FRAME: Before Souper Bowl Sunday PLOT: A couple of friends are getting ready to watch the game. They turn on the TV to watch the pre-game reports and get an unexpected report from youth discussing hunger issues and what can be done to address those issues. PROPS AND STAGING: In the front of the church there is a “large split screen TV.” What this means is that there is a large “frame” of a television, with a center “hole” about five foot by five foot, with the top of it around six foot tall. This should be made out of a simple wood frame with cardboard or even paper over top. It is then painted or drawn upon from the front with such words as “SONY”, “volume”, “channel”, etc. Part of the screen is cut away. (i.e. hole). This “screen” is large enough that the two television announcers can appear in it, and it might work well to have it surrounding the lectern or another speaking position that has a microphone or wired for sound. When people are “on television” they simply step into the “screen” behind the television. They are now “live”. The announcers do the same in their screen. This is intentionally silly and simple. There are two chairs somewhat facing the screens, at an angle. Acting blocks can be used for this. Snacks for TV viewers, showing lots of goodies to eat during Super Bowl. The lesson read for this day is Luke 4:16-30. Matthew 25:31-46 can also be used with some slight alterations in the beginning lines referring to the lesson that was read. Scene 1 Two people enter. Male and/or female. Names are used here for our performance. There are no parts that cannot be switched around. Simply change the names and the pronouns. H ARRY: And all we want you to do is to conf ess. ALICE: That’s righ t, confess. H ARRY: Conf ess that we are all part of the problem ALICE: Because if we can conf ess that, well, maybe we can all be part of the solution. M ARK: Enough of this. Let’s get on with the game. The game cannot go on, until MARK and JAN conf ess that they are in f act a part of the problem of world hunge r. M ARK: But I can’t do that. ANNO UNCE R #1: There has been resistance to this in the past. The f ear is that admitting this means givin g up your o wn f ood and water. ANNO UNCE R #2: W hen, in reality, th e answer isn’t that simple at all ANNO UNCE R #1: No, indeed it is complicated, but the f irst step is confession. This is the Super Bowl. W e are ready to simply enjo y ourselves, settle back f or the big game, and eat some f ood. Is there anything wrong with that? H ARRY: Not at all. W e want you to enjoy the game. I wa nt to enjoy the game. Bu t you have to do it honestly. M ARK: I am. H ARRY: Not if you aren’t honest about all you ha ve, and all that others don’t have. J AN : S witch the channel. ANNO UNCE R #2: Sorry that’s not going to work. Let’s go down on the f ield and see what’s goin g on. ( to RE PORTER), are you there? ANNO UNCE R #2: In fact, that’s one way you can make a diff erence, by giving. M ARK: W e all know that doesn’t change a thing. ANNO UNCE R #2: It might change you . H ARRY: Yea, e veryone thinks it’s just about us… The starving people. But it’s also about the giver needing t o give! PL AYE R: Yea. I like to give. Makes me feel good. It’s the system baby…and you are a have ALICE: And we are the have -nots. H ARRY: You are a part of this. Come on, conf ess it. M ARK: I will not. J AN : Ma ybe we sh ould conf ess, you know, just to get on with the game. ANNO UNCE R #2: There’s an idea. M ARK: Oh that’s like throwing a dolla r to the homeless gu y. ANNO UNCE R #1: He’s right. W e’re asking more. ANNO UNCE R #2: W e’re asking f or ownership. ANNO UNCE R #1: You kno w… W hen did we see thee hungry? ANNO UNCE R #2: W hen did we see thee naked… ANNO UNCE R #1: W hen did we reject you. ANNO UNCE R #2: Sort of like a certain Gospel we heard… M ARK: But I don’t want to conf ess. H ARRY: W hy? M ARK: Because it wont’ make a diff erence. Don’t you understand? I’m f rustrated. ANNO UNCE R #1: W e all are. ANNO UNCE R #2: I know I am… I want to get on with the game. ANNO UNCE R #1: But we can’t stop being honest. W e can’t stop trying. W e have to conf ess. ANNO UNCE R #2: Just because you can’t solve the problem, doesn’t mean it isn’t yours . M ARK: I see what you mean. ANNO UNCE R #1: So, what do you sa y? A little honesty? H ARRY: A little co nf ession, ALICE: That hunger is something we ALL need to think about.
