• Referee drops the puck to start each period,
and after a goal is scored
• Line Change procedure
– the referee looks at the visiting bench and
counts 5 seconds to himself, then raises his
arm and looks at the home bench. After 5
seconds his arm comes down
– the visiting team can change until the arm
goes up, then the home team, who can change
until the arm comes down

• Referee calls the penalties and goals
– Linesmen may report majors, double minors
match penalties, bench minors, misconducts,
game misconducts and gross misconducts as
well as goals not observed by the referee (Rule
5.3 d)
– Report these discretely so that players don’t
hear, it is referee decision to call them or not
• All officials can call high sticking puck, glove
pass, and puck out of bounds

• Following Play (Referee)
– when the puck is on the same side as the
referee, follow about 15’ - 20’ behind the puck
– when the puck is on the opposite side, follow
about 8’ - 10’ behind the play
– the critical area for skating as a referee in the 3
official system is from the blue line to the goal
line, that’s where the game is won or lost
