PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
EARLY DISMISSAL TIME THIS WEEK:
This week, the last week of Term 3, we have two early
dismissal days:
 On Wednesday 17th September, school finishes at
1.00 pm for Parent / Teacher Interviews.
 On Friday 19th September, the last day of term,
School finishes at 2.10 pm.
TERRIFIC PROGRESS FOR TERM 3:
After a very productive Term 3, we will commence
school vacation on Friday. Our VCE students have
been working hard as they complete their last full
term of study. After just a few short weeks in Term 4
our VCE students will conclude their classes and begin
preparation for their exams. Last week the students
in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 received their Naplan reports.
The College is very pleased with this year’s Naplan
scores. The College has witnessed good progress in
both English and Maths across all Naplan levels.
Overall there are 5 components to Naplan testing;
Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
and Maths. At each Naplan level at least one of these
components is now at or very near to ‘state average’.
Some components have shown three years of
continual improvement. These improving results are
due to the hard work of both students and teachers.
In coming years we look forward to more and more
Naplan components reaching ‘state average’.
In addition to academic progress this term, I would
like to congratulate those students who have
represented our College in district athletics over the
past two weeks. We have a number of students who
are now going on to the regional finals. Our music
students are also continuing to shine. Our Year 1 VCE
students performed admirably at the annual ‘Supper
Club’ event last week. The singing and playing was
high quality and wonderful to listen to.
We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break.
Term 4 commences on Monday 6th October.
PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS:
A reminder to all families, that the Term 3
Parent/Teacher Interviews are on tomorrow.
Students are encouraged to attend the interviews
with their mum and dad. This is every parent’s
opportunity to hear directly from the teachers as to
how their sons and daughters are progress with their
studies.
BEST WISHES TO MR CREBBIN:
At the conclusion of this week, Mr Crebbin, in the Year
5 - 8 Learning Community, will be taking leave. His
replacement will be Ms Monks, who is resuming her
teaching with us. Best wishes to Mr Crebbin for his
period of leave and to Ms Monks as she re-joins the
Year 5 - 8 Team.
THREE BIG CHANGES TO THE STUDENT VACCINE
PROGRAM:
In 2015 three major changes to the student vaccine
program will impact on parents of secondary school
students:
1.
The Hobsons Bay City Council’s immunisation
service may contact you about the secondary
school vaccine program. Schools have been
authorised to provide parent contact details to
local councils for this purpose. Contact the
Laverton P – 12 College main office by 28th
February 2015 if you do not want your contact
details given to the Hobsons Bay City Council.
2.
In 2015 only, the vaccine that protects against
diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough will be
offered to all students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.
From 2016, this vaccine will be offered to Year 7
students only. This will provide earlier protection
from these diseases.
3.
The time - limited human papillomavirus
(HPV) vaccine program for Year 9 boys was
completed in December 2014. HPV vaccine will
continue to be offered to all students (both male
and female) in Year 7 from 2015.
Look out for the vaccine consent form/s coming home
from school with your child. You need to read,
complete and return the form/s regardless of whether
your child is being immunised at school.
To learn more about the changes, the diseases, the
vaccines, or how you can prepare your child for
vaccination go to www.immunehero.health.vic.gov.au
Have a great week and a terrific school vacation,
Neil Sproal
College Principal

Thursday 18th September.
Success came to Mohammed Abdulhamid, Athok Diar,

and Eh Wah Eh Wah. A massive congratulations to
On the 9th of September, Michelle from Deakin
University came out to work with the Year 7 students.
The students participated in a special session called
Building Blocks. The purpose of the session was to
assist the students to think about employability skills.
Each block had an important question for the students
to consider how what they are doing now relates to
the future. Questions such as ‘Why School?, ‘Why
Dream?’ and ‘Why Play?’, saw teams of students
having rich conversations and coming up with some
great responses to their questions. Each team shared
their responses with the rest of the group and all
students were encouraged to reflect on what they had
learned at the end of the session.

ATHLETICS:
On Wednesday 10th September 2014, students in
Years 5 & 6 competed in a range of events at the
Athletics Carnival in Newport. All the children did
their best and were very well behaved setting a good
example for the College. The following students have
made it through to the Western Ranges & Wyndham
Division Athletics finals. Triple Jump Chan Phan, Shot
Put Morenda Maka, Discus Keren Heka, High Jump
Migell Agnew and 100 metres Jessica Lamont. We
wish them all well in the next round.
NAPLAN RESULTS:
Congratulations to all our Grade 3 students who sat
for the NAPLAN test. Our results in the grade 3 have
shown that the students are increasing their skill level
each year. We have high expectations of all our
students in the Prep - 4 and results are reflecting the
hard work by all classes and teachers.
We are particularly proud of our top achievers:
 Sitara White.
 Sharni Martin-Buttigieg.
 Jake Lloyd.
 John - Murray Carroll.
They will be in an inaugural honour roll for 2014 and
this roll will be added to each year.
SWIMMING PROGRAM:
The Prep - 4 students have enjoyed the first week of
the swimming program. Some students have made
amazing leaps of skills and gained confidence in the
water.
We have over half of our students
participating this year and so far it has worked
without a hitch, with alterations made to our
timetable. We have already booked for next year at
the same time. This time we have been able to ask for
the earlier timeslot and therefore should be able to
have 10 days of swimming.
UNIFORM:
Holidays are a great time to sort and purchase
uniform pieces for the summer term. We will be
asking that students wear their correct uniform and
parents will be sent home reminders of the uniform
expectations if students are out of uniform. Some
students have the wrong coloured laces in their shoes
and are not consistently wearing the uniform as set by
the school policy. We have included the uniform
policy and expectations as a reminder.
HATS IN TERM 4:
In Term 4 we ask that all students have a plain navy
blue hat with a brim all the way around. Students
wear the hat during their PE lessons and during recess
and lunch.
SCHOOL UNIFORM:
The Laverton College P-12 School Council Policy
requires all students to wear school uniform. Personal
appearance and cleanliness are important and a
student’s appearance should be in keeping with the
standards, image and spirit of the College. The
College uniform allows students to develop a sense of
pride and belonging while promoting a positive image
within the community. It clearly identifies our
students, assisting with the provision of a safe
learning environment. The College uniform must be
worn to and from school and on school excursions.
Students not in full school uniform must bring a note
from a parent on the day concerned and obtain a
uniform pass. Students may be sent home to change
should their dress be considered inappropriate or the
school reserves the right to supply a clean second
hand article of clothing for the student to wear on
that day. Please note undergarments should not be
visible.
