Page 1 of 5 Primary Schools Quiz – 2017 Guidance for Schools A Competition for Primary 7 Pupils The District Final will be held on Saturday, 10 June 2017 at The Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen August 2016 edition 1 Page 2 of 5 Introduction District 1010 has, for a number of years, run a PSQ for Primary 7 pupils, which starts with local heats and culminates in a district final. These events give great enjoyment to pupils, parents, teachers and Rotarians. The competition aims to offer senior primary pupils an experience of competing as part of a team along with the opportunity to meet pupils from other schools in a safe, friendly atmosphere. This document provides information for schools. Competitors The PSQ is open to pupils in Primary 7. However, depending on the size of a school some may need to form teams from years earlier than Primary 7. Small schools may enter joint teams from more than one school. Teams are formed of four participants and one reserve. The reserve is used solely in the case of illness or other unavailability of a team member either before or during the club heat, area or district final. The reserve cannot substitute for a member of the team for any other reason. Reserves may not deputise for parts of the quiz on the basis that they have greater knowledge of a particular subject. It is not a requirement to send five pupils to a heat, area or district final and schools may enter four participants only. Teams may wish to wear some kind of uniform and are encouraged to bring mascots. Stages in the Competition There are three stages in the District 1010 Competition. These are: Club Heats Area Finals District Final. Format Each stage of the quiz consists of 10 rounds of six questions. Suggested topics are as follows: Geography Literature Music Spelling/Grammar General Science The Environment Famous People 2 Page 3 of 5 The Human body Media Art Sport Maths History Pictures This is a general knowledge quiz aimed at senior primary school pupils and all teams should be able to answer most of the questions, with a few more exacting questions to test and identify the winners. Club Heats Club heats will usually take the following format. The Question Master will begin the event by explaining the format and reminding supporters not to call out the answers. Each team should be seated at individual tables set up for four with adequate space between teams to prevent eavesdropping. Team names for each school will be clearly visible on the table. The pupils work as a team and usually one team member will write the answers on behalf of the team. An answer pad will be prepared for each team, either already named for each school or left for the team to do so. Pencils/pens will also be made available. An example of an answer sheet is at Appendix 1. The Question Master will reinforce, during the quiz, the importance of fairness and not calling out the answers. PowerPoint or oral presentation may be used. Normally, the Question Master to ask the first two rounds of questions, and then give the answers to round 1 plus the scores for the first placed three or four teams. Then round 3; give the answers to round 2 and so on for the remainder of the quiz. This allows time for marking to be done before announcement of results. Two points are given for a correct answer and one for a partially correct answer at the discretion of the Head Marker. In the event of a tie a further six questions (prepared previously) will be asked and should there still be a tie, then a “sudden death” play off will be held. The Question Master will make it clear whether the contestants need to shout out the answer or put up their hands. Club Heats are usually held in February/March but may be held at the discretion of the Club. They should be completed by end of March. The winning team from each Club Heat goes forward to the Area Final. However, where a single club has 13 or more schools entered in the Club Heat the two school teams with the highest scores will qualify for the Area Final. It is normal for all participants (including reserves) to be presented with a certificate and for the winning team to receive some type of award such as a trophy or medal. 3 Page 4 of 5 Area Finals Area finals will be held in April / May with the winning school teams given sufficient notice to organise attendance at the District Final if successful. The Area Final follows the format of the Club Heat. The top two teams from the Area Final will go forward to the District Final. District Final The District Final will be held on Saturday, 10 June 2017 at The Beach Ballroom Aberdeen. Those teams taking part will be given further information prior to the event. The winning team in the District Final will receive a prize of £500 to purchase equipment for their school and hold the 1010 District Primary Schools Quiz Shield for a year. Prizes will be awarded to second and third teams of £300 and £200 respectively. All participants at the final will receive a certificate. Adjudication During all parts of the quiz the Head Marker’s decision will be final. Photography Whilst children enjoy having their photograph taken the Rotary Protection policy is clear that parental authority must be sought. Schools will be asked to confirm that this is the case.
