CONTEXT
The Learning Division plays a central role in maintaining the ongoing assessment/examination programs, as well as
facilitating the renewal and transformation of BC’s K-12 education system. The Branch exemplifies personalized
learning principles (e.g.: cooperation, creativity, innovation, social responsibility) in our work and in how we engage
with others. The Division’s ongoing areas of responsibility include Aboriginal Education, Curriculum and
Assessment, Diversity and Equity, Early Years, E-Learning and French Programs.
The coordinator reports directly to the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Assessment.
JOB OVERVIEW
To propose, develop and support directions for the design, development and implementation of K-12 provincial
science and mathematics assessment programs, based on curriculum, and with a thorough knowledge of current
pedagogy, emerging technologies, government strategic directions for educational transformation, as well as
jurisdictional and academic research. The Coordinator manages the development and production of provincial
assessment and examination programs.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Required:
 Responsible for developing provincial examinations in Science and Mathematics for the current graduation
program.
 Develops new provincial assessments/examinations aligned with educational transformations and changes
in curricula.
 Analyzes trends and key developments in measurement and assessment internationally.
 Supports and evaluates the design and development of K-12 Science/Math curriculum.
 Manages teacher teams to develop provincial assessments for graduation.
 Provides subject area expertise regarding strategic direction, policy, pedagogy and content as it relates to
K-12 provincial curricular and assessment programs for Science and Mathematics.
 Works on the development of assessment materials such as performance standards and other classroom
assessment activities.
 Analyzes and builds on current academic and jurisdictional research as well as public and stakeholder
feedback to manage the production of K-12 assessment programs and their associated support materials.
 Leads project teams of professional staff (i.e.: government staff, teachers, contracted educational
specialists, seconded school district staff and school district trustees), prepares project plans and manages
budgets for the on-going development, implementation and evaluation of assessment.
 Develops work-plans, timelines and processes leading to the development and revision of provincial
assessment.
 Provides advice and recommendations to ministry executive, school boards, educators and responds to
issues related to assessment and curriculum development and evaluation through briefing notes and other
communication materials.

Researches and coordinates responses to emerging assessment and curriculum issues and priorities;
responds to queries from school boards, educators, education partners and parents.
Prepares and provides information and updates on Ministry programs and initiatives to educators and the
general public through presentations, written materials, resources and individual consultations.
Facilitates and represents government priorities at consultation forums with our education partners.
Stays apprised of any national and international research, policy and trends, as well as Ministry and
government strategic directions in the development of provincial assessment and curriculum.
Prepares and/or negotiates contracts, monitors performance and authorizes payment.
Performs other related duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENT
Education
 Bachelor’s degree in education or related field. Graduate degree preferred.
 Minimum of 5-years of recent experience teaching in the K-12 education system or experience working with
teachers and other educators.
 Holding a valid K-12 teaching Certificate of Qualification and/or graduate work in an education related field
is an asset.
Experience
 Experience with test construction, measurement theories and/or assessment design.
 Prefer experience teaching students at the intermediate or secondary levels.
 Experience developing and/or implementing science and mathematics assessments and curricula.
 Experience designing and implementing K-12 classroom assessments.
 Experience researching curriculum theory, policy and jurisdictional trends; analyzing findings and
presenting recommendations to executive.
 Experience in managing, planning and organizing complex, large-scale projects.
 Experience selecting, managing and leading professional teams comprised of educational stakeholders.
 Experience working on numerous and diverse projects including developing content for project-related
service contracts to achieve business goals.
 Experience in effective project management; planning and supervision of projects.
Knowledge
 Expert knowledge of large-scale and classroom assessment
 Knowledge of the K-12 education system and science and mathematics curriculum and instruction.
 Knowledge of item development and test construction.
 Knowledge of educational assessment and evaluation; and how they relate to provincial curriculum
frameworks and specific curricular program areas.
 Expert knowledge of science and mathematics curricula.
 Expert knowledge of provincial curriculum programs, structures and policies.
 Knowledge of curriculum theory and the various orientations, styles and structures represented in
jurisdictional curriculum materials.
 Knowledge of how provincial curriculum aligns with other key program areas of BC’s education system
(e.g.: Assessment Programs, Graduation Programs).
