Dear Parents
Summer Term Curriculum Overview
During the Summer term our work will be based around the theme ‘The world about us– ground,
air, and water’. As before, we will draw out the elements of the key areas of learning in the
Foundation Stage curriculum, with special focus on reading, writing and mathematics. Our
emphasis on practical activities and learning through play continues, and we will be preparing the
children for the transition into Year 1.
We will be setting up a variety of role play areas, including a garden centre to provide a range of
opportunities for learning – planting and growing seeds, role play, etc. – which will continue and
develop through the term. We are taking the class with all the KS1 children to East Hanningfield
Reservoir to support our work.
Our Literacy texts will include stories and information texts linking to our main theme. The children
have made good progress with our Read Write Inc ‘phonic word work’ and we are also seeing that
this is having a beneficial effect on their writing. We will be continuing with Read Write Inc, focusing
on capital letters, alphabetical order and letter names as well as learning how to write simple
sentences using capital letters, finger spaces between words and full stops. We hope you will
continue to support literacy by reading regularly at home and practising the given sounds and
words.
In Mathematics we will continue with practical activities involving counting forwards and backwards
in steps of different sizes, comparing and ordering numbers including playing maths games, and
build on the addition and subtraction work we started last term. We will also be measuring by
comparison and using non-standard units in weighing, length, capacity, and using money in our
garden centre. Playing the school homework maths games will all help to reinforce this work in
school.
Our personal, social and emotional development continues to focus on building and understanding
relationships, helping the children to become confident and independent learners, and to respect
the needs and feelings of others as they work and play together in the classroom and playground.
The children will continue to work with Mr King for games, Mrs Austen for music and Senorita
Perez to learn Spanish.
Our class assembly will be on Wednesday 17th May and we look forward to sharing our work with
you.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Shay
