What is the Open Compute Project?
Energy Efficiency/Cost Benefits
Get involved!
Background
•Software, hardware not optimal for facebook, other
social applications
•Not every component used to optimize efficiency
•facebook decided to make their own software, servers,
and data centers
•Stripped down components, nothing cosmetic
•Goal: to build one of the most efficient computing infrastructures at the lowest
possible cost
•Based on the idea of open source software, why not open hardware
•facebook published all of the designs, specifications, and other intellectual property
in
order to promote innovation
Energy Efficiency/Cost Efficiency
•38% more efficient (no air conditioning)
•22% fewer materials
•Saved 24% in costs
