Fee Changes - Houston Food Bank

PARTNER AGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT
June 8, 2012
Fee Changes
Houston Food Bank’s goal is to serve you as the primary source for free and
reduced-cost food and other products. We are happy to report that we successfully
expected and budgeted for higher operating costs in our new facility at 535 Portwall.
However, we are challenged by unanticipated expenses in key areas that are not related to the
operation of our new warehouse.
Because we are making more deliveries to agencies, our transportation costs have risen to
accommodate higher fuel costs, maintenance and equipment. And as anyone who has been to
a grocery store knows, food prices have gone up considerably. Here’s one specific example:
We used to pay 8¢ per pound of potatoes in value added processing (VAP) fees. Now we’re
paying 13¢ per pound in VAP.
As a result, the Food Bank will increase fees effective Monday, July 2, 2012. We have done
our best to withstand this change. The handling fee has remained the same for many years.
In fact, fees charged by the Houston Food Bank continue to run well below the limits set by
Feeding America, which certifies food banks nationwide. For example, Feeding America allows
food banks to charge up to 10¢ per pound in delivery fees. That’s more than two times higher
than the Houston Food Bank rate.
Thank you for your partnership and understanding. The Houston Food Bank is proud to stand
by your side in leading the fight against hunger.
These new rates take effect July 2, 2012.
