Secondary: Quick Start Dodgeball competition rules and guidelines Competition Format National Schools Competition – Quick Start Dodgeball Team Information Minimum Squad Size: 6 girls & Maximum Squad Size: 12 girls Year Groups Gender Year 7 and 8 Single Gender Competition Equipment (Schools need to provide/take to competition) Set of coloured bibs Competition Rules Starting the Game Each team consists of 6 players 3 balls begin in the centre zone On the referee’s whistle, a maximum of 3 players from each team race to collect a ball from the centre zone The balls must be passed back to a team mate within 2m of the back wall or line On collecting a ball, the players are free to throw the ball at the opponent in order to get them ‘OUT’ Playing the Game A game = 2 minutes A match = best of 3 or 5 x 2 minute games (to be determined on the day of the competition based on time available and number of teams entered) Substitutions are allowed between the 2 minute games (but not during the each 2 minute game) You can use a ball in your possession to block a thrown ball Headshots do not county and both players stay in FIVE SECOND RULE and valid throw The leading team (the team with the most players on court) has 5 seconds from the referees call to throw the majority of balls in their possession The leading team can always hold on to 1 ball The losing team (the team with the least players on court) can hold on to the balls for as long as they like The leading team in a game must make a valid attempt when throwing the balls (Valid attempt = throw with intent to get someone out) Elimination ‘GETTING OUT’ Hit by a dodgeball thrown by an opponent without a bounce An opposition player catches a dodgeball that you have thrown Stepping over the centre zone lines or out of the curt The ball you are holding is knocked from your hands by an opponent’s throw Punching or kicking the ball Winning a Game The Game is won when one team eliminates all opposition players within 2 minutes or no players remain, the winner is the team with the most players left on court after 2 minutes. Winning a Match The winners of the match will be the team with the most games won out of the 3 or 5 match series. Respect For The Ref The ref’s decision is final. They will always give the benefit of the doubt to the person being thrown at. You must not remonstrate with the ref during a game. If you want to chat please do so after the set has finished, as the ref needs to be concentrating on the game. Finally, please enjoy the dodgeball – it’s great! Scoring League / Tournament Competitions: The competition will be played at a central venue and in a round robin format. By winning a match, teams will score Win = 5 Points Loss = 1 point Loss but score 50% or more of the total score = 1 ‘Bonus’ Point First Aid & Emergency Procedures Schools are responsible for the provision and administration of their own First Aid. The Competition Organiser will brief all School Staff prior to the start of the competition, and will provide information about emergency procedures. Withdrawing from a Competition In the event your school has to withdraw from the Competition, you need to inform your School Sport Manager at your earliest convenience, ideally with a minimum of 48 hour’s notice. Head Teachers will be notified of schools withdrawing from the competition. Cancellation of a Competition In the unlikely event the competition has to be cancelled the Competition Organiser will contact schools at the earliest opportunity. If you are not contacted assume the competition is taking place.
