27th January 2017 Dear Parents, This week we have been learning about birds and how we can care for them as part of our focus on the RSPB Big School Bird Watch. In our assemblies we have been talking about how to feed birds in the winter and how to recognise common birds that we might be able to spot locally at school or at home. We have been having some exciting outdoor learning sessions led by Hannah from Elmbridge Countryside Team. In these we have been learning about local birds and how to recognise them as well as making bird feeders to attract birds to our school grounds. Thanks to our amazing school community, we have been able to focus on our normal learning activities despite the flood that occurred in Rabbits Class on Sunday. It was a dismaying thing to discover a flooded classroom and it was so uplifting that many staff, governors and parents came to the rescue on Sunday as well as the Fire Brigade and an emergency plumber. We would like to say a really huge thank you to everyone who came along to help – this meant that Mrs Selencky and her team were quickly set up in the Burrow room and were ready for lessons as usual on Monday morning. Rabbits class team are remarkably resilient and are taking it all in their stride, supported by the strong team around them. At present we are meeting with the Insurance loss adjuster, buildings surveyor and works project manager to ensure that the cause of the burst water pipe is quickly identified and that the classroom is properly dried and repaired. We do not have a time scale yet but we expect it to be a few months in order to be done properly, so the Burrow is Rabbits classroom for the present - and furniture, books and belongings have been moved to ensure that it is properly set up for Rabbits Class. Otters are very happily sharing their outdoor canopy area for outdoor learning. Next week we will be having 5 PGCE students from Roehampton University visiting our school and observing some of our lessons – giving them the opportunity for a great learning experience and professional dialogue with our teaching staff. They will be part of the school for the week and will participate in our school activities such as assembly and outdoor learning as well as observing lessons. Our staff walking competition is off to a great, and now increasingly competitive, start. We are currently top of the league of schools with our Star Troopers team at number one position, and all three of our teams are in the first 50 schools. We are all doing our best to get out there and to walk those steps and miles for our team – not all are keen however - my dog refused to go out with me this morning! All classes started our ‘Daily Mile’ school walking on the common on Wednesday, wearing our wellies and walking together for the last 15 minutes of lunchtime. It was a brilliant sight - seeing everyone walking together in the fresh air. We returned invigorated for our afternoon of learning. Next week we will be walking together on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and hopefully the weather will remain sunny and fresh. We will be looking out for any birds that we recognise as we walk around – if we don’t scare them off that is. Congratulations to Freya, Navid, Loki, Gracie, George, Harriet, Bethany, Louise and Michelle for finishing their sticker charts.
