MINNESOTA FOOTBALL SHOWCASE
(MFCA ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GAME)
Historical Facts: 1945 to December 2016
General Game Facts:
1.
All-Star Football eras in Minnesota:
There have been three different “eras” in the history of the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game.
2.
1945-1946:
The Minneapolis Times newspaper sponsored the first two games. The All-Star Game was idle from 1947 through 1951
because the Big 10 Conference denied the use of its facilities to high school all-star football games. The decision by the Big 10
Conference was in support of a National High School Federation recommendation to ban high school all-star games.
1952-1960:
The All-Star Game resumed in 1952 under the sponsorship of the Fifth District American Legion. Due to NCAA eligibility rules,
the All-Star Game was absent from the Minnesota sports scene from 1961 through 1973.
1974-2016:
Modern era – the All-Star Game resumed in 1974 as the “Shrine Bowl of Minnesota”, sponsored by the Shrine organizations of
Minnesota in partnership with the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association (now MFCA). The MFCA has worked
with various sponsors since 1974 to stage the annual All-Star Football game for 44 consecutive years.
How many All-Star Football games have been played?
The December 2016 game is the 44th game played in the current series and the 55th overall.
3.
How many game formats have been used in the Minnesota All-Star Football Game? Two formats


North versus South: 1945-46, 1952-60, 1974-79, 2011-December 2016; 24 games, overall series record is South 13, North 10, 1 tie
Metro versus Outstate: 1980-2010, 31 games, overall series record was Metro 16, Outstate 15
Note: the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game returned to the North versus South format in 2011.
4.
Highest attendance: 32,167 at the 1975 Minnesota Shrine Bowl (July 26, 1975 at Memorial Stadium, Minneapolis).
5.
What months of the year have the All-Star Games been played in?
June (21 games)
July (10)
August (21)
September (2)
December (1)
When the All-Star Game originated in 1945, it was considered the “kick-off game” for the coming high school football season. In the 1940’s and
1950’s, the high school football season started in mid-September, so the All-Star Game was played in late August or early September. It was a
late August or early September game through 1960. In these years, the All-Star Game was played during the timeframe of the Minnesota State
Fair.
When the All-Star Game resumed in 1974, it became more of a mid-summer game, with games played in late July or early August (as early as
July 23 and as late as August 8). It was a late July game in 1974-75; early August 1976-77, late July 1978-85 and early August 1986-95.
The All-Star Game moved to a late June timeframe (final Saturday in June) in 1996. The All-Star Game was played on the final Saturday in
June from 1996 through June 2016. This changed in December 2016, when the All-Star Football Game evolved from a summer event to a
post-season event.
Overall, the latest date for a Minnesota All-Star Football game has been December 3 and the earliest date has been June 24.

1954: Minneapolis Vocational high school was located in downtown Minneapolis, with no on-campus football facilities. Starting in 1951,
Vocational played their home games at the former Parade Stadium, just outside of downtown Minneapolis. Vocational player Walter Traczyk
played in the 1954 All-Star Game at Parade Stadium, making him first player to participate in an All-Star Game on his high school home field.
1991: The former Mielke Field hosted the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game in 1990 and 1991. From 1959 to 1993, Mielke Field
was the home field for the high school football teams in ISD 281 (Robbinsdale Area Schools). This included Robbinsdale (1959-1981), Cooper
(1964-1993) and Armstrong (1970-1993) high schools. Trent Anderson was the only ISD 281 player to participate in the Minnesota High School
All-Star Football Game in either 1990 or 1991, making him the second player to participate in an All-Star Game on his high school home field.
2013: Starting in the 2012 high school season, St. Cloud Tech played their home games at Husky Stadium because of mold and water damage
to Clark Field. The 70-year-old facility has been home to St. Cloud Tech football since 1942. This made Jacob Peterson the third player to
participate in an All-Star Game on his “home” field.

How many times have multiple players from the same All-Star team thrown two or more touchdowns passes in the same AllStar Game?
This has occurred twice in the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game. In the 1997 All-Star Game, Keith Meyers (Cannon Falls) and
Justin Thielke (Hancock) both threw two touchdown passes for the Outstate team. Despite the combined passing performances of Meyers and
Thielke, Outstate lost the 1997 All-Star Game 27-26.
In June 2016, Blake Kragnes (Dilworth-Glyndon Felton) and John Larson (Braham) each threw two touchdown passes for the North team,
leading the way to a 38-19 win.

2 TD passes (5, 10 yds)
In true All-Star game fashion, the two touchdown passes from Justin Thielke (from a 9-man football school, enrollment 75) were thrown to a
Class 5A receiver (Josh Salic from Rochester John Marshall, enrollment 1125). Through 2016, Justin Thielke remains the only 9-Man school
quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in the Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game.

The Lake Conference in 2009 is the first conference to have three players score 1 or more touchdowns in the same All-Star Game. The Classic
Lake (three in 1997 and two in 1998) is the only conference to have two or more players score in consecutive All-Star Games.
Several conferences have had two players score in the All-Star Game (18 conferences in 21 All-Star Games):
Big 9 (1955, 2008, 2015), Classic Lake (1998), Lake (1959, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2015), Lake Blue (1987), Lake North (1984), Lake South
(1979), Minneapolis City (1954), North Suburban (1991), Northern Lakes (2005), Northwest Suburban (2008), South Suburban (2012),
Southwest (2005, 2012), St. Paul City (1953), St. Paul Suburban (1978, 1983, 1986), Suburban East (2007, 2009), Suburban West (1982), TriMetro (1981), Twin Cities Suburban (1998, 2000), Wright County (2015)
Three different conferences accomplished this in the 2005 All-Star Game (Lake, Northern Lakes and Southwest). Two different conferences
accomplished this in the same All-Star Game in 1998, 2000, 2008 and 2012.
In the 1982 All-Star Game, the Suburban West Conference had two players score, but for separate All-Star teams, one for Metro and one for
Outstate (all other occurrences have been two players scoring for the same All-Star team).

28. Player versus Coach?
There have been several instances where a specific school was represented by a coach on one team and a player on the
opposing team. In two different All-Star Games, an All-Star head coach actually coached against his starting quarterback from
the previous season:
1975
1975
Bob Beliveau, Alexandria, South, QB
Ed Christopherson, Alexandria, North, Head Coach
1976
1976
Joe Smith, Richfield, South, QB
Dick Walker, Richfield, North, Head Coach
In the 1976 game, Joe Smith threw three touchdown passes against his former high school coach (setting an All-Star Game record in the
process).
The other player versus head coach situations occurred in these All-Star Games:
1974
1974
Dan Schmidt, Minneapolis Patrick Henry, South, Guard
Don Swanson, Minneapolis Patrick Henry, North, Asst Coach
1978
1978
1978
1978
Ed Bifulk, St. Thomas Academy, North, RB
Gerry Brown, St. Thomas Academy, South, Head Coach
Dan Porter, Minneapolis Washburn, South, Guard
George Wemeier, Minneapolis Washburn, North, Head Coach
2014
2014
Peter Palacek, Stillwater, North, OL
George Thole, Stillwater, South, Asst Coach Retired
2015
2015
Michael Lee, Dawson-Boyd, North, WR
Cory Larson, Dawson-Boyd, South, Asst Coach
Note: the possibility of having coaches and players from the same school on different All-Star teams existed from 1974 to 1978 because the
team placement processes were different for coaches and players.
In these years, players were assigned to the North or South team based on a geographical dividing line or conference affiliation (Twin Cities
area conferences were assigned to either North or South).
From 1974 to 1978, coaches who were selected as the “Coach of the Year” in each of the eight administrative Regions around the state were
assigned to coach in the All-Star Game. The “Coaches of the Year” for Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 were assigned to the South team. Regions 5, 6, 7
and 8 were assigned to the North team.
In the 1976 example above, Joe Smith played for Dick Walker at Richfield in the 1975 season. Walker was selected as the 1975 Region 5
“Coach of the Year” and was assigned to the 1976 North All-Star team coaching staff. Smith was selected as an All-Star player from Richfield.
At that time, Richfield was a member of the Lake Red Conference. In 1976, Lake Red Conference players were assigned to the South All-Star
team, creating the situation where the Richfield coach was on the North and the Richfield player was on the South.
