SUDDEN DEATH
Here we go ladies and gentlemen, the knockout
stages are here. A slip-up here and you are out and
waiting for six months for the next season to start
– a win and grand final glory beckons. The a grade
lads will be hoping to continue their dominance
over Mirboo North this season as the only team to
have defeated them, while b grade will be aiming
to do the toughest thing in finals cricket – win the
flag from fourth place. In their way will be the
might of Jeeralang-Boolarra who have only lost
once this season, but the seconds are always up for
a fight and will be keen to avenge their last
meeting when we were embarrassed for 37. And
last but not least the Sharks will have designs on
burying last seasons’ premiers Hazelwood North
and make it through to the last game of the
season.
THIS WEEK’S GAMES
1sts – vs Mirboo North @ Mirboo North
2nds – vs Jeeralang-Boolarra @ Yallourn North
Sharks – vs Hazelwood North @ Home No. 2
DUCKS
Daniel Siddle was runout for the fourth time this
season, will be blaming this on Bloomy who told a
group of the Under 16’s earlier in the season to
“watch the way Sidds runs between the wickets,
he’s one of the best.” It was also his seventh duck
in the senior ranks.
Tim Cranwell was dismissed for nought but when
he checked the scorebook he was in for a surprise
as they had him marked down as 1. Tim’s honesty
cost him a dollar as well as club duck number 26,
not a bad number for the veteran though.
Jamie Brierley went for the big slog on the third
ball he faced and picked up duck number two, no
doubt he would have spat it afterwards as well.
Jon Hayes with a golden duck, another one for the
collection.
Brad Aitken nabbed his fourth of the season and
took his senior tally to 14.
And lastly Gerard Hayes a very good bat and one
for the future, picked up his first in the Colts’ final
match of the season.
FIRSTS
Last Week (Rd14) v Mirboo North (Day Two)
At 2/53 overnight, we needed a good start in
pursuit of our target of 170. Mirboo North had a
decent amount of rain throughout the week and
the pitch and outfield had softened which wasn't
good for batting. Alfie and Bloomy picked up from
where they left off and the runs started flowing.
Anything short just sat there and both batters,
especially Alfie, enjoyed it. We reached 130 before
Bloomy was trapped in front for a well-made 43.
Alfie raced on but a mini collapse up the other end
saw Siddle and Tick-tock depart for 0 and we were
5/136 still in control. Freshy joined Alfie and did an
excellent job on a tough batting pitch. Freshy
knuckled down and reached 16 leading into the tea
break and the points ours as we passed them 5
wickets down. First ball after tea saw Freshy pop a
ball back to the bowler in Smit and his well fought
innings came to an end. Alfies excellent innings of
91 eventually came to an end shortly after and his
knock combined with Bloomy and Freshy helped us
over the line. Our tail end collapsed to the
conditions and we were bundled for 187, not a bad
score considering.
We went back out to bowl and Evo struck instantly
with a blinder of a caught and bowled to remove
Alexander. Only 5 overs in, and the weather the
best it had been all day, the game was
unfortunately finished due to bad light.

This Week (Semi) v Mirboo North
Finally we have reached that time of the year; the
smell of finals in the air has been lingering and has
finally come to fruition. We couldn't manage to
sneak back into 2nd position, but with the forecast
to be pretty warm all weekend, it shouldn't matter
too much with weather being the main concern for
finishing 3rd and not really the ground selection.
Beating Mirboo twice this year, last week most
recent, this should give us a slight advantage
mentally, but with finals cricket, anything can
happen. Pup has made room for the return of
Tazzy this week who clearly strengthens our
bowling stocks. Our bowling and fielding was at the
top of our game last match against Mirboo and the
return of Tazzy will see them under the pump even
more. Tazzy has been the key with 39 wickets at an
avergae of 6, with his opening partner Evo the next
best with 19 wickets. Jamie ‘Baghdadis’ Brierley
has also been in great form of late and has 9 A
Grade wickets to his name. Our batting has been
excellent since Christmas and although last week
we only managed 187, it was a pretty good score
on a difficult batting pitch. Bloomy has been in
great touch and Taddy is ready to rejoin him. Alfie
and Matt have been good, but Siddle has struggled
of late and will be after some runs. Tim and Freshy
have been solid at 6 and 7 and complement our
middle order very well. This game could go until
the fading light on the Sunday as per last year’s
final, but the result will be different this year.
SECONDS
Last Week (Rd21) vs St Vincents
Facing a depleted St Vincents team, we needed a
win to secure our finals position. Jono won the toss
and bowled first and it didn’t take long for the
bowlers to back up his decision. Jeremy Brewer
struck first early on before Nath Niko claimed 2
quick wickets. All the bowlers dug deep and had
success as they polished off St Vincents for just 72
runs. The swing bowling of Brendan Wynne was
best as he claimed 4/9 from 7 overs. Nathan
bowled sharp and accurate yet again to claim 2/18.
With each other bowler, including Evan Sheekey,
claiming 1 wicket each.
Our turn to bat and 72 runs stood between us and
a finals berth. Zomes was dismissed early and
Shayne left not long after for 13. Brad came and
went and we were stuck at 3/29. Things didn't get
any better as we lost another 3 batters quickly to
slump to 6/36 and victory was looking bleak. In
stepped Keno and Nathan Niko to pave the way to
victory. Kenno’s experience was what was needed
as he posted a great 23* and was ably supported
by Nathan Niko who chipped in with 12*. We
passed them 8 wickets down and were very lucky
to get out of this one with the points and seal
fourth spot on the ladder.
This Week (Semi) v Jeeralang-Boolarra
A great end to the season see's us play off in finals
against the ladder leaders in Jeeralang-Boolarra. If
we are to dish up a similar performance to last
weeks, we will be leaving this season behind in an
instant, we need a much better performance if we
are to make it past this game. Jeeralang had the
edge over us this year when they dismissed us for a
miserable total, but we all know that finals cricket
is a different game and if we can bat first and post
a decent total, you never know what will happen.
We welcome back in Pup and Wellsy, two very
good inclusions who could prove pivotal in this
game. Jack Aitken has made his way back to the
Sharks, and unfortunately for Trent Roberts, he will
be 12th man for this game but still a crucial part of
the team. Runs have been inconsistent by most
players this season. Zomes and Wellsy have
probably been the main two contributors and have
had much more consistency than most. Pup, Brad
and Shayne can always score runs when needed
and Kenno has been valuable since his return and is
a class above. Our bowling stocks are deep with
Nathan and Jono ‘Man-Bun’ Hayes leading the
charge and have been in great form all season.
Jeremy Brewer has been good of late and the
swing of Pup and Wynnie will be a good change up
and provide some wickets. We will need to be at
the top of our game if we are to make it through
this round.

THIRDS SHARKS
Last Week (Rd 19) v Mirboo North
On the last round of the season, we travelled to
Mirboo North. We lost the toss and were sent in to
field. Instant success with the ball saw us start
great as Rick Galea and the Prez took charge to
have Mirboo North reeling at 5/25. Our fielding
was on as too was our bowling as we hit line and
length consistently. A small partnership from the
tail saw Mirboo North post still a small total, but
respectable to what it could have been, of 72 runs.
Rick Galea took the lead and claimed 3/11 from his
10 overs. Jody Capp was amongst the wickets who
snared 3/21 from 9. Nic ‘Fist Pumper’ Brewer and
Steeley managed 2/18 and 2/20 respectively.
Our turn to bat and a slight order change was
made to give people a go. Cappy and Pete Mooney
opened up but Cappy didn’t last long as he was
sent packing early. Kirk joined Moons and hit a
quick fire 13 before he too was dismissed. Nic
Brewer gave some early chances and one was
eventually taken to see him leave the park. This
brought Steeley to the crease to join the Wall of
Pete Mooney. The pair carried us over the line as
we proceeded to make 3/84 at the end of play.
Steeley finished with 15 not out but it was Pete’s
patient innings of 31 not out that helped us pass
Mirboo North’s total and seal our fate on top.
This Week (Semi) v Hazelwood North
Sealed on top spot, we play the fourth placed
Hazelwood North team. We are 1 win 1 loss against
the reigning premiers this season and will need to
make that 2-1 if we are to progress to the main
event. There is no doubt we have been the best
team in C grade all season, but now it just takes
one slip up and all of this hard work can come
undone. We will need to be at the top of our game
if we are to beat Hazelwood North. Groves and
Wicka have led the way all season with the bat and
will continue to do so. If Hazelwood do not remove
both of these batters early they could be in for a
long day. The rest of the batting order hasn’t had
to do a massive deal some games but we do bat
right down and all players can hold a bat. Moons is
always reliable and Coltman, Steeley, Zac Smith
and others can always be relied upon.
The bowling stocks are good with Rick Galea and
the Prez leading the way and claiming a great deal
of the wickets this year. Jack Aitken has been in
great bowling form, as too has Cappy and Steeley.
For the Razorbacks their main danger men will be
Jayden Hawkins who has two centuries this season
including one last round against the Colts, always
gives a few chances early and the Sharks need to
take one of these offerings. And the other is young
gun Hayden Kimpton who has been one of the
stars of our Under 16’s this season in their secondplace finish, and will be keen to put one over his
coach Nic Brewer and secure bragging rights for
next season.
We are looking the goods this season and we
should progress through this game and into the
main game without a bump.
THIRDS COLTS
Last Week (Rd19) vs Hazelwood North
For our last game of the season, our gallant crew
travelled no further than 90 seconds to take on
Hazelwood North. We bowled first and had
Hazelwood under the pump as Steve Hanning’s
opening spell produced the goods to have
Hazelwood looking shy at 4/14. Our bowling was
great and fielding was even better with Matthew
“Bulldog” Burridge taking a great catch as well.
Only two batters made it past double figures,
unfortunately one of these was Jayden Hawkins
who went on to make triple figures which helped
Hazelwood post a total of 141 from 30 overs. Steve
Hanning bowled excellent to produced fantastic
figures of 5/42 from 10 overs, his first senior 5
wicket haul. The consistent Briggsy also had a great
spell to claim 3/21 from 6 overs. Harry Law also
picked up a wicket.
Chasing 141 we were in for a chance especially
after another great opening stand between Burra
and Tanner Higgins of 49. Burra (26) was removed
first, and Gerard not long after. Benn Zomer and
Tanner got going but unfortunately Tanner was
finally dismissed for a well-made 34. Benn and
Steve both reached 10, and Aaron Farley managed
21, but no other batsmen could get a start as we
were bundled out for 117. A great season comes to
an end for our youngsters but they have put up
such a fight all year and should be applauded for
LATROBE GLOBE

their efforts in senior cricket. Burra has done an
outstanding job leading the way for them and you
couldn’t think of anyone better to do the job than
Burra.
won’t affect their decision making, and the Sharks
will have Glen Helmuth and Bernie Vizard, another
proud club member doing his best to help out the
umpires in their time of need.

UMPIRES
Col Walker had a tough task filling all the spots this
week and some phone calls were made with John
Wirz donning the blue shirt once again this week.
The firsts will be officiated by Greg Forte and
Trevor Blandford, the seconds have Ray Hooper
and Tony McMillan, both ex-club members but it
JUNIORS
Under 16’s bowled first in their semifinal against
Moe Maroons, and when Hayden Kimpton had the
dangerous Joel Mitchell caught behind for just 20 it
triggered a top-order collapse as the Maroons slid
to 4/51, which became 5/81. Some bowling changes
took the pressure off and skipper Bailey
Nikodemski took the foot off the pedal, some
lacklustre bowling also didn’t help as we served up
41 extras. Big H returned to the crease and finished
with 4/21 from his ten overs, while Briggsy picked
up a handy 2/11 from 8 overs. Two fantastic runouts, including one by Tanner Higgins from the slips
with a direct hit at the bowlers’ end, were
impressive to watch as we rolled the Maroons for
144.
With the bat we lost three early wickets to be 3/16,
a strong partnership of 54 between Will Kennedy
and Briggsy got us back into it but when Briggsy
was bowled going for the sweep and Will skipped
down the track and missed one to be stumped for
48, we were up against it. Hayden did his best to
shepherd the chase with a fine 30 but ultimately
too much was left to the tail as we were dismissed
for 129.
The Under 14’s bowled first against Moe and Zac
Brown claimed an early wicket, followed up by Sam
Roberts to leave them reeling at 2/18. However it
LATROBE GLOBE
14 March 2015
took until Browny’s second spell to claim the next
wicket with Moe eventually posting 117. We were
all out for 115 in reply, with Sam (18) and Anu (17)
our best bats on the day.
SELECTIONS
Didn’t take long with no major surprises; Tazzy
comes back into the firsts with Pup the man to miss
out, Pup has played mostly second grade this
season since having surgery before the Christmas
break. Mark has always been a ones player and will
be hoping for a full season at peak fitness next year
but for now is focussed on winning a premiership
with the seconds, while Will Kennedy was chosen
as twelfth man. With Pup back in and Wellsy
returning, Trent Roberts is the unlucky man to miss
out on a spot in the seconds and will be their
twelfth man and will be ready to go if the
unthinkable should happen and injury should
strike. Trent hasn’t been able to have the season he
wanted due to work commitments but is a class
bowler and has played first grade as a spinner.
For the Sharks there was some conjecture, Kirk
asked the skipper what time he wanted the team at
the club and Groves called out 10.30, and bring
your shirt so someone else can wear it, but the
Jergenaut managed to get a gig and will wear his
own strip. Benn Zomer has been chosen as the
twelfth man, a young superstar and a player who
has been tipped for a bright future with the gloves,
get his first look at senior finals action.
BRICK AUCTION
Went off a treat at the vote count, with the prize
going to father & son duo Tim and Luke Van Dyke
to the tune of $800, fighting off stiff competition
from a syndicate of four, an impressive effort.
The Van Dyke’s look to have played their last game
together with Tim not in the best of health at the
moment while Luke is off to sunny Queensland at
season’s end, but they will now be forever linked
with the purchase of the brick for season 2014/2015
which goes on the wall beneath the club honour
boards and stays there all year round. A fantastic
prize for two fantastic club men and it was great to
see plenty of members shaking the hands of the
victors on the night.
