Providers
• Five Major Providers:
• Verizon
• AT&T
• Sprint
• T Mobile
• Wal-Mart – Pay as You go
• Cell phone plans can be as expensive or inexpensive as you
make them
• You can sign a contract (most contracts are 2 or 2 ½ years) or
you can buy a “pay as you go” phone (also called prepaid
wireless)
• Some features cost more to add onto your plan, for example,
text and picture messaging (data plans), internet usage, email
capabilities, etc.

- Or can set number on speed dial, then push speed

• Must press ‘start’ key to have the phone begin the
dialing sequence.
• Must push ‘end’ to stop the call.
Texting
• A Different way to send a message
• Converts number pad to alphabet
• Must have Texting package on your phone plan
• 2 styles of key pads
• 2-9 divides up alphabet
• Push 2 once for “a”
• Push 2 twice for “b”
• Push 2 three time for “c”
• Each key is a letter, like a keyboard
• Must have phone number to whom you are going to text to
How to Text
1. Move courser through contact names in phone. Select
the person you want to text.
2. Select options: new Text message. Push select button
3. New blank screen should come up.
4. Use key pad to select letters:
• Push 2 once for “a”
• Push 2 twice for “b”
• Push 2 three times for “c”
• Or if you have alpha keyboard (Typewriter) select letters
• Create your message
5. Select Send to send message
Internet Surfing
• Getting on the internet on your phone
• Phone acts like a computer, but the screen is smaller
• Must have a data plan on your phone bill
• May be expensive

• Ability to load books onto the eReader from
Libraries and Internet sites
• Can also load Applications, Games, Movies, & Internet
• Two Main Players:

What is it?
Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study
and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited
number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.
Can I become a “Facebook” member?
Yes! Anyone can join as long as you have a valid e-mail address. If you want to see the
profiles of your classmates or co-workers on Facebook, be sure to use your school or
work email to register. Once you are an official member you can:
• Search for other people, but you can only see profiles for those who are currently in
your network unless you request them or they request you as a friend
• Create your own profile
• Upload photos and videos
• Send messages
• View your homepage

MySpace
What is it?

Myspace is a networking website where people of all ages can create their
own page. They can customize the page’s background, pictures, videos,
comments, and information to fit their personality and life style.
Can I have my own MySpace page?
Yes! Anyone can have a page. The only thing you need to get started is an email
address. From there you set up your profile and can receive help getting started.
You can set your security settings in different ways too. This helps keep your
information private and safe from hackers.
What are the different security settings?
You can choose for your page to be either public or private. If it is public, anyone
can look at it and they do not have to be a member to do so. The private setting
is where only people who are your friends can look at your page. The other thing
you can set to private is your pictures. This is where you pick who can look at
your pictures.
Instant Messaging
What is it?
Instant Messaging (IM’ing) and Text Messaging (via cellular
devices) allows you to type short messages that appear on
someone else’s computer screen or cell phone. This means
of communication is faster than e-mail, but less intrusive
than a phone call.

Web conferencing services – connects clients with video, presentations
and voice
Skype
What is Skype?

• Downloadable software that enables conversations, video
sharing and instant messaging between people from all around
the world
• Part of the Microsoft family
• Must have a camera attached to computer
How is Skype used?
Used by millions of individuals and businesses
Can make video and voice calls, send instant messages, and
share files
Every day people are using Skype to make low-cost phone calls
to both mobile and land lines.
Twitter
What is Twitter?

Twitter is a messaging service that works over a variety of
networks and on a number of devices. Each Tweet holds
140 characters.
How is Twitter used?
There is one question that is asked: “What are you doing?” and you
can choose to respond to it.
Your friends and family can reply to your post and can keep in contact
with you through this way of social interaction.
Updates from your friends and family also come to you through a
variety of devices: web, phone, etc.
YouTube
What is YouTube?

YouTube is the home for video online:
• Watch millions of videos
• Share favorites with friends and family
• Upload your videos to a worldwide audience
YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips.
Everyone can watch videos on YouTube.
People can see first-hand accounts of current events, find videos
about their hobbies and interests, and discover the quirky and
unusual.
People can use YouTube videos for educational and instructional
purposes.
Blogging
What is a blog?
An online diary or a personal chronological log of thoughts
published on a web page
A means by which people communicate and share information
What is the purpose of a blog?
Record personal thoughts and experiences
You can share information
Networking and communication between groups or individuals
In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on
an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your
visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it or link to
it or email you. Or not.
