Krembil Research Institute Small Equipment Competition (SEC) 2017 Guidelines Application Deadline May 19, 2017 at 4:00 PM EST This funding opportunity is designed to support the acquisition of new research equipment at the Krembil and to support investigators pursuing excellence in research and innovation. The SEC uses a one-time reimbursement approach to provide up to $30,000 of small equipment costs for successful applications. The total funds available will amount up to $100,000 for the 2017 competition year. Eligibility to Apply: Applications will only be accepted from Principal Investigators (PI) of the Krembil Research Institute. PIs must hold a current appointment as a Senior Scientist, Scientist, Affiliated Scientist or Clinician Investigator (CI) at the Krembil, or have submitted an application for an appointment pending approval. Affiliated Scientists must have support from their sponsoring PI including space in the sponsoring PI's laboratory for the proposed equipment. Budget: The maximum amount per application is $30,000 CDN. Investigators must provide a budget breakdown of eligible costs, including but not limited to a current quote, maintenance charges, warranties etc. Currency of requested funds is required. Applications that exceed the maximum amount may be considered if matching funds are available. A letter confirming the commitment of matching funds must be provided in the application. Additional Guidelines Applications may be submitted by a single PI or by groups. A PI can submit no more than one solo application (for independent equipment) AND; A PI can submit a maximum of two (2) group applications (for shared or common equipment). Common equipment to be accessible by all Krembil users will be evaluated more favourably. Equipment requested may include both dry lab and wet lab components. Proposed equipment must fit within your designated laboratory space and remain on Krembil or TWH premises – no additional space will be allocated. Awarded equipment must be purchased by the appropriate avenues (i.e., PR online; RIS for computer equipment). Any equipment with an electrical component must be CSA approved. Applications will be assessed using the selection criteria outlined below: Individual use, shared, or common equipment (20) Budget Justification (10) Required skill to operate (10) Need for/ Use of equipment (25) Excellence of research proposed (25) 2017-SEC Page 1 of 6 Maintenance & sustainability (5) Space to house equipment (5) Approval/Final Decision A selection committee will make their recommendation based on the weighted scores noted above. Applicants will be notified of the results of the competition via email and funding will be provided after the equipment has been purchased. Decisions will be final and application scores will not be released. Use of Funds Eligible Expenses Direct costs of equipment relating to the purchase, extended warranty and installation. Installation may include minor remodeling costs (i.e., connection to building services, electrical, data, vacuum, plumbing). Must be a single piece of equipment (i.e., freezer) or several pieces which combine for equipment to function together (must be well justified). Ineligible Expenses Ongoing maintenance and servicing of equipment. Salaries or stipends of personnel to operate the equipment. Major infrastructure requests (new construction or structural alteration). Consumables. Additional funds due to changes in quotes. Previously purchased equipment. Items to Note For equipment having a computing component, applicants should first consult Chip Campbell ([email protected]). For equipment to be housed in ARC, applicants should first consult Dr. Badru Moloo ([email protected]) and obtain a Letter of Approval. For common equipment, applicants should consult Frank Vidic ([email protected]) and obtain a Letter of Approval. For equipment to be used with human subjects, please provide confirmation that REB approval has been obtained. Please ensure exisiting building services are available, or that costs of these been factored into the application. Applicable taxes should be factored into the cost.
