Custom Design Benefits is celebrating the firm’s 25th anniversary this year. Julie
Mueller, President and CEO of Custom Design
Benefits (CDB) states, “Being able to sustain
a successful business over a 25-year period is
beating the average for privately-held companies. And, we are thriving because of our
employees!”
If you ask her employees though, they
will tell you that the company’s leadership is
what keeps the business stable and growing. In
fact, Custom Design Benefits has experienced
explosive growth since 2012 all because of
Mueller and her team’s willingness to challenge
the status quo.
Custom Design Benefits is Cincinnati’s
largest, independent third-party administrator
of self-funded health benefit plans and consumer driven services. Throughout these past
25 years, CDB has been working with employers and their brokers to help them navigate
the costly and difficult process of providing
healthcare benefits for their employees.
The most common solution adopted
by employers to cope with steadily rising
healthcare costs has been to shift some of those
higher costs to employees in the form of higher
deductibles and coinsurance.
Mueller and her innovative CDB team
knew there had to be a better way – and there
was! TrueCost!
Unlike most traditional and high-deduct-
ible plan designs in today’s healthcare market,
TrueCost bases provider reimbursement on
what it actually costs to deliver treatment
versus a discount on an arbitrary schedule of
billed charges. TrueCost has been able to save
CDB’s clients about 30%.
Those savings are passed directly to employees with an affordable plan design that
eliminates high deductibles and coinsurance.
They only pay an affordable co-pay and this
incents the use of primary care and less expensive care which helps to reduce healthcare costs
for employees and employers alike.

that alone buys you a lot of good will with
your company’s largest asset,” said Sandra
