Choose to Move - the City of Myrtle Beach

Congratulations and welcome to the 11th Annual
Choose to Move Program! We are excited to announce that this
year it will be a City Wide Program involving Pepper Geddings
Recreation Center, Crabtree Gym, Base Recreation Center and
Mary C. Canty (formerly known as Canal Street Recreation
Center). You have taken the first steps in pursuing a healthy
lifestyle and the challenge to participate in the Choose to Move
recreation competition. Take advantage of all this competition has
to offer and it will help lead you toward your goals.
Physical Change starts with Mental Change
*Be sure to like „Choose Health and Fitness‟ on Facebook! There
you will find program updates, photos, a calendar of events,
fitness and aquatics class schedules, and get the chance to
connect with other program members.
We will also have Choose to Move information and photo updates on our
“Choose to Move” Shutterfly” site so please be sure your email is clearly
written on your registration form. Look for an invitation to be a member.
Choose to Move Program Guidelines
During our 2016 Choose program we want to extend a welcome to the entire City
Community while focusing on you and your health. We want everyone to be positive,
motivated, and encouraged by each other and the staff. Getting all of our facilities and their
members together will add another level of camaraderie and competition. Hopefully you will
have many opportunities to socialize with fellow Choose to Move members as well as
numerous Choose Coaches and instructors from all of the centers.
For your best chance at success, please carefully read the following
information to learn the guidelines for your program:
Individuals



You can choose to ONLY compete as an individual and not join a team.
The biggest emphasis will be on the individual competition.
As you attend fitness classes, meetings, and events, you will meet
participants that have similar goals as you; find a partner/ buddy that
will help to motivate you through the program. This buddy is an
integral part of your workouts through encouragement and your being
there for one another, but there are no points gained by what you do
with your buddy, you are working as an individual.
As an individual you will try to earn points by participating in classes
and going to events, etc. At the end, the individual with the most
points accumulated will win.
Teams





Each competitive team will consist of 4 Move members. That team can
select a leader, amongst themselves, who will be the motivator
behind that team.
Choose to Move Coaches from each center will oversee these teams at
their own facility. That coach may oversee 3, 4 or 5 teams and he/she
will help motivate, inspire, and give you program information and
track the progress of all the team members.
Team members will attend meetings, workouts, Choose Challenges
and other events together to motivate and support each other. You will
meet new friends and you can work together to win points for your
team and achieve your goals.
If you have chosen to compete on a team, your success reflects on
your team. Individual success means team success! The more points
you earn as an individual the more chances your team has to win.
On January 9th you will decide between 3 choices in Choose to Move:
1) To compete as an individual ONLY
2) To compete as an individual and join a competitive team of 4
3) To compete as an individual and join a “no pressure” team of 10, a
Hakuna Matata team. (This is for those who want to take
advantage of all that is available but they don‟t want to feel the
pressure that they will be letting their team down because they

already know they cannot attend some of the classes, meetings,
workouts or challenges. By choosing this type team, you still have
a chance to win a prize, but it will be a much smaller prize than
those who win as a competitive team.)
On January 9th you will also choose your team of 4 or 10. You will be
separated into groups who work out in the day or night, and by facility
where you work out, then you will see who is available for a team;
competitive or Hakuna Matata.
MEETINGS





Your first Move meeting will be on Saturday, January 9th, 2016 at
Pepper Geddings, during our Choose-a-Palooza Opening event at
10:00am. At this initial meeting Linda will discuss program details,
answer questions, and you will get to meet fellow Choose to Move
participants. This meeting will count toward perfect attendance goals.
In the effort of bringing us all together, from all centers, we will have
multiple „Choose to Move‟ meetings just prior to our Rec Days and
Nights. At these meetings we will discuss health, nutrition, exercise,
recreation and the Choose Newsletter. (similar to our Town Hall Mtgs)
You can attend a morning or evening of your choice. You will meet
other Choose to Move members and hear from a number of Choose
Coaches from all centers.
Your own Choose to Move team will meet occasionally or perhaps go to
fitness or aquatics classes together. The leader of your team of 4 or 10
will keep in contact to see what your schedule is and how you can get
connected as a team.
As a Choose to Move member you are encouraged to attend all 4
meetings throughout the program. All 4 meetings are required to
receive Perfect Attendance.
Meetings provide accountability, motivation, information, and
camaraderie, so be sure to attend!
Choose-A-Palooza




Following the first meeting, Pepper Geddings will be hosting a first
ever Choose-A-Palooza party!
Choose-A-Palooza Party activities will be held all over the Pepper
Geddings Recreation Center from 11:00-12:00pm on Saturday January
9th (immediately following the Choose to Move meeting).
Activities include, but are not limited to; fitness challenges, party
games, a food calorie challenge, before and after photos, center tours,
and fitness class demos.
Attendance and participation at the Choose-A-Palooza party will earn
you 200 points for your team and will be counted toward your perfect
attendance goals.
Rec Days and Rec Nights





You will be given multiple opportunities to participate in Rec Day and
Rec Night events throughout this program.
Choose Coaches will be facilitating games and activities for you to get
to know other people, to get active, and to have some fun.
To give everyone an opportunity to get involved, activities at each
event will be tailored to the people in attendance.
200 points will be awarded to each individual for attending and
participating in the event activities.
We will have Rec Days and Rec Nights at Pepper Geddings, Base Rec
and Mary C. Canty in the hope of spreading the recreation love.
Program Phases
Nutrition, Activity, and Community



Week 1-3: Nutrition - meetings, program information, and
newsletters will be focusing on nutrition and techniques for
improving eating habits.
Week 4-6: Activity – coaches and instructors will focus on the
importance of exercise, teaching new ways to be active, and
incorporating new movements into your routine.
Week 7-9: Community – Leaders will be highlighting
opportunities for community service, you will participate in a can
food drive, and learn new ways to bring the community together.
Recreation Bucks and Weekly Goals Punch Cards







In the Choose Program you will have an opportunity to earn Recreation
Bucks, which can be used for purchasing a fitness class punch card, a
membership, merchandise, and/or other programs.
Recreation Bucks will be available during special events or given as
prizes for a job well done!
Your Weekly Goals Punch Card is a tool to help you achieve a wellrounded workout routine and to easily outline your workout goals.
The card will include goals for all the components of fitness: cardio,
strength, and flexibility. You can choose to take fitness classes or to do
your own personal workouts to help you fill out your card.
Personal workouts can be done in the cardio room, weight room, pool,
track or even outdoors. You are required to do at least 30 minutes
of activity to receive credit on your weekly goals card.
There will be a “Your Choice” category where you can choose any
activity to complete your card.
You will receive your first Weekly Goals Punch Card at your 10:00am
meeting on January 9th. You will turn in your first card to the front
desk by or before Tuesday, January 19th at 9pm. Normally you will
turn in your card by or before Monday at 9pm, but the first week is





different because the Recreation Centers are closed on Monday,
January 18th for the Martin Luther King holiday. When you turn in
your card, you will receive the following week‟s card. Each week you
can use Monday as a „flex day‟ to use the current week‟s card or the
following week‟s card.*
Small changes will be made weekly to your Goal Punch Cards in an
effort to challenge you and to help you reach your goals.
200 points are awarded for completing a Weekly Goals punch card. If
your card is not complete by Monday at 9pm, 10 points will be
awarded for each punch you did earn.
100 weekly bonus points can be earned by attending one of the
„Featured Activities‟ which will be highlighted on your Weekly Goals
Punch Card. Multiple options will be given so you can choose the
activity you want to attend. You can receive credit for only one.
1 Recreation Buck will be awarded for turning in a Weekly Goals punch
card that has earned at least 200 points.
The maximum point value for your punch card is 300 points.

A message from the Choose to Move Director, Linda Hopkinson:
What a JOY it is to lead a group of people who ALL have the same desire…to MOVE!
Our goal in Choose to Move is to “have fun” while exercising to the best of our
ability with health and wellness as our common end result! How exciting it is to
watch Choose to Move members make new friends, find new heights of exercise
levels, push themselves just a little bit more each time and then see the results in
their fitness level.
We are excited about our City Wide Program this year to include all of our Myrtle
Beach Recreation Centers and their members. We welcome all of you from this
awesome community. Find your level of comfort, then challenge yourself. There is
no limit to what you can accomplish in these 10 weeks.
Important advice: stay positive, never give up, enjoy new friendships, work hard
and HAVE FUN! Now get psyched, wrap your mind around this challenge and get
busy so you will see the results at the Grand Finale. I look forward to taking this
journey with you. Always know I am here for you!
Sincerely yours,
Linda 
