Professional Growth Step #5:
Inquiry: Components of Effective Instruction; IIP
Induction Requirements:

If you are new to BTSA or our program, complete the on-line Consent Form at www.btsa.ca.gov.
Include the receipt in your Induction Activities.


Read The Parallel Curriculum in preparation for the unit you will teach in Professional Growth Step #7.
Gather teaching context data using the “Class, School, District, Community” (pages 3-10) If you have
your class information and/or English learner information in different formats, please feel free to
attach that in lieu of hand writing the form. If documentation remains the same as Professional
Growth Step #1, please feel free to re-use your work from last year.




Marshal your resources on the “Resources” pages (pages 11-12).
Select your 3 focus students and complete the “Focus Student Selection” (pages 13-14).
Reflect on your teaching context using the “Reflection” page (page 15).
Assess your current instructional practice using the “Components of Effective Instruction,” Form A
(pages 16-19).

Have the Support Provider complete an observation and complete the “Observation Record,” Form B
(page 20).


Reflect on your teaching context using the “Reflection” page, Form C (page 21)
Developing a professional growth plan on the Year 2 Individual Induction Plan and e-mail it to
[email protected] (page 22-23).

Complete the activities listed on the “Professional Growth Step #5 Induction Activities” sheet (pages
24-26) or continue work on your 4 practicums. If you are at a new site, ensure an orientation (sample
attached on pp. 22-23) from your Site Administrator or designee. Be sure to have him/her initial Item
9 on page 24.



Submit a completed “Professional Growth Step #5 Feedback Form.”
Submit your monthly Activity Log(s).

Applying the Framework to Practice and
Assessment Exploration

Review your CSDC from Professional Growth Step #5 for demographic changes. Date
any revisions. Move the CSDC forward to Step #6.
Review your content standards using the “Standards Review Discussion” (Form A).
Develop an annual plan using “Curriculum Mapping” (Form B).
Schedule your teaching time using the “Sample Allocation of Time” (Form C).
Create an “Assessment Plan” (Form D).
Track student progress on the “Student Performance Chart: Entry-Level Assessment”
(Form E).
Reflect on student progress on the “Reflection” (Form F).
Complete an observation focusing on the most intensive student and the most advanced
(preferably Gifted) students. Record the observation on the “Conditions that Support
the Most Challenging Students—Observation” (Form G).
Record your post conversation on “Conditions that Support the Most Challenging
Students—Post-Observation” (Form H).
Document the results of your assessment on the “Student Performance Chart:
Summative Assessment” (Form I).
Reflect on student progress on the “Summative Assessment Reflection”” (Form J).
Reflect on the impact of assessment analysis in this Step on student progress on the
“Reflection Discussion” (Form K).
Assess your professional practice on all Elements CSTP Element 3, 4 and 5 on the
“Descriptions of Practice.” Move the Descriptions of Practice to Step #5.
Review your Year 2 Individual Induction Plan. Date any completed actions and adjust as
needed. Move it forward to Professional Growth Step #6.


Design a unit plan using the “Instructional Series Map,” Form A.
Document your students’ skills on the “Prior Knowledge Analysis,” Form B.
Plan 3 lessons and have the SP observe 2 of them. For each lesson:
o Complete the “Instruction Plan,” Form C.
o Complete the “Observation Record,” Form D.
o Complete the “Progress-Monitoring Chart,” Form E.
Reflect on the success of the series on “Reflection,” Form F.
Assess your professional growth my marking the DOP on all Elements of CSTP
3, 4 and 5. File the DOP in Professional Growth Step #7.
Review your Year 2 Individual Induction Plan. Date any completed actions and
adjust as needed. Move it forward to Professional Growth Step #7.


Review all your Professional Growth Step work and Induction Activities to ensure that they are
complete.
Review your Descriptions of Practice.
Complete the “Reflection,” Form A and compare it to Form A from Professional Growth Step
#4.
With your Support Provider, mark your DOP on all elements of CSTP 6, and holistically mark
CSTP 1-5. Date the assessment and file it in Professional Growth Step #8.


Attend a “Bag Review/Exit Interview” seminar with your Support Provider.




Review the “Exit Interview Scoring Rubric” to evaluate and revise your responses.

Review your Year-Two IIP, note progress, and modify as needed. Date actions completed and
any modifications.



Submit a completed “Professional Growth Step #8 Feedback Form.”
Prepare your responses to the “Colloquium/Exit Interview Prompts,” Form B.
o All Induction candidates will present their responses to a panel, as well as
submitting their BTSA bags to a Bag Review Panel.
o All SSU credit candidates will also present their responses to two prompts
(Standard 15 and one other) at the Colloquium.
Optionally, use the” Presentation Guide, Form C” to assist you in developing the presentation.
Review the “Exit Interview and Bag Review Tips for Success.”
Review the “Bag Review Rating Sheet” to ensure that all documents are available to the panel.
Submit your monthly Activity Log(s).
Complete the BTSA Statewide Survey (www.btsa.ca.gov) on-line when requested by the BTSA
program each spring. Include your receipt.
