Graphing Inequalities Preview
Standard Covered: M8A2. Students will understand and graph inequalities in one
variable.
a. Represent a given situation using an inequality in one variable.
b. Use the properties of inequality to solve inequalities.
c. Graph the solution of an inequality on a number line.
d. Interpret solutions in problem contexts.
This two to three day lesson plan will be used during the 7th grade’s preview unit
for next year. We try to pick a few standards from the 8th grade curriculum and expose
the students to the critical components. We will teach them how to solve inequalities for
one variable, and how to graph the inequality. Although the standard states inequalities
will be solved in one variable, 8th graders are expected to use one variable (x) to solve
for the other (y). The wording of the standard is not clear. This lesson follows solving
one step inequalities and graphing them on a number line. Students will use Graphing
Calculator software to check their work.
Day One
A Promethean board will be used to introduce how to solve equations using two
variables. See below for the flipchart to be used to introduce and practice solving and
graphing inequalities.
Days Two and Three
Graphing Calculator software will be introduced in this class period. Students will be
required to solve and graph the following equalities by hand and then check their work using
the software. The teachers (this is a collaborative class) will be walking around the room using a
checklist to evaluate student work. When a student has a match between their graph and the
Graphing Calculator graph, he will call the teacher over who will check it off.
