The event will be in the Roosevelt Room of the Campbell Community Center. Dinner starts at 5PM so bring your contribution beforehand. The game is free for Unit 507 members and $10 for nonmembers. Until the membership approved a change in the Unit’s by-laws at last year’s meeting, the board was required to notify our 700 plus unit members by mail of the annual membership meeting. Now we are able to provide email notice, and I’m about one-third of the way through the 626 email addresses provided by the ACBL. In addition to providing email notice of the membership meeting, I’m asking the members of Unit 507 to join an email group that will be limited to receiving messages about special Unit functions, such as tournaments, the membership game, the holiday party, and other unit games. It’s taking me a while to send the emails, because Google Groups is limited to sending 10 invitations at a time and I have to keep saying “I am not a robot.” If you don’t receive an invitation and would like to join, or would like to join with a different email address, please let me know and I’ll add you to the group. If you play at the San Jose Bridge Center, you’ll be seeing at the bridge table an application to participate in a player directory. We will also make the application available on svbridge.org. This is a different group than the above email group. The Unit Board and the club owners are trying to collect contact information for those who actually play at the Bridge Center, whether or not you belong to Unit 507, so long as you are willing to be contacted by a club director, by the Board, or by other players. The applications give you options so you can restrict who will see and use your contact information. If you want only directors to contact you, you may hear from them about special games and opportunities to play with a new partner. If you want other players to contact you, they’ll probably be asking you about playing or teaming up. If you authorize contact by the Unit, you’ll hear about the same things I described in the previous paragraph. You may wonder how we can limit an electronic directory to the other directory participants. In order to access the directory, you’ll have to provide your ACBL number. Coming up next Wednesday is the Longest Day, a fundraising event for Alzheimer’s during which you can play in three different games at the Bridge Center, with the addition of a special afternoon fast pairs game. After that, the Unit and owners will be raising money to replace the carpet at the San Jose Bridge Center if we can’t talk the landlord into replacing it. As you’ve seen, the carpet patches where walls used to be are unraveling and the original carpet is collecting spots. It’s time for an upgrade, so don’t be surprised if your regular game turns into a “carpet” game. That's why the San Jose Bridge Club has registered to put our passion to work by participating in The Longest Day, an annual Alzheimer's Association fundraising event. SAVE THE DATE! Make plans to come out and play bridge on Wednesday, June 21, at the San Jose Bridge Club. I'll be hosting three games -- the usual 11:00AM game (FREE lesson at 10:30), a Fast Pairs event from 3:00 to 5:00PM and an evening game at 7:00PM. All games have Charity Game rating which means I get to give out a TON of masterpoints! The extra dollar charged per person plus ACBL sanction fees will go to Alzheimer's research. Any additional donations are gladly accepted. I hope many of you will participate in The Longest Day bridge games. I hope to see you all there! Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs 6/26 Do you enjoy endless post-game analyses of the hands that you have played? Would you like to hear what some experts have to say about the hands? Would you like to see what happens when the hands are played at a few thousand other tables throughout the world? Would you like a book that discusses the hands that you played? The Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs offers an opportunity for all of this. And you may even win a prize. One of only a very few session in North America of the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs competition will be held at the San Jose Bridge Center on Monday June 26. Game time is 7PM. Your $15 entry fee entitles you to a book with expert hand analysis and a chance at small plaque and a small cash prize as well as to see how you fair in a matchpoint competition scored across the truly worldwide field. http://www.sjbridge.org/direktor/1706.pdf Page 4 of 6 Idioter’s Corner by Mich Ravera I have heard it said that the only thing worse than discovering that you have fallen asleep in an important meeting is to find yourself in an unimportant meeting during which you can’t get to sleep. Neither of these happens in the Unit 507 Board meetings. Once again, as in the Jungle Book as illustrated by Disney Studios, we have an assorted cast of characters who fell asleep or were out of town while the others took a giant step backward and failed not to volunteer to serve on the Board. I look forward to serving on the Board with two of these new “failures at non-candidacy”. I don’t want to spoil the announcement at the Membership Dinner, but I look to publish something about both of them next month. I hope that the 9 or 10 returning or continuing members will have something to say as well. I need to thank Jeff Hack for his contribution to these pages. Hacking It: XYZ and the Good Place by Jeff Hack I’ve been asked to play a reasonably new convention XYZ. XYZ stands for three bids at the one level. X is a suit. Y is a suit. Z is a suit or 1NT. This is a responder’s convention. Responder can bid 2♣ an artificial invitational to game bid. Or 2 an artificial game forcing bid. Or maybe something else. I’ve been watching a new comedy show “The Good Place.” My understanding of Heaven and Hell is that good people go to Heaven and the other go to Hell. The Good Place takes the idea that only the best of the best go to the Good Place and everyone else goes to the Bad Place. I see a similarity between XYZ and the Good Place. Playing XYZ I see four choices. 2♣, 2, PASS and something else. Some hands are clear that the hand is a game force and responder will bid 2. Some hands are clear that they are an invitational hand and responder will bid 2♣. Some should be passed and the final contract is 1NT. Some will be something else like a direct raise to 3NT. But, what about the hands that are right between 2♣ and 2. This is a problem with many conventions. Who makes the decision? Part of the decision depends on who your partner is. Part of the decision will depend on experience. I see the same four choices between the Good Place and the Bad Place or Heaven and Hell. Some people will obviously belong to Heaven. Some people will belong to Hell. But, who makes the decision when they are right on the borderline? On the Good Place they had a holding place the Medium Place until a hearing happens. Or a mistake was made and they go back to Earth. For those who believe that our lives are preordained can believe this. On the Good Place they had a situation where two people with the exact same name died within .01 seconds. They switched them by mistake. That’s a real problem I see with XYZ. I make a forcing to game bid. My partner has opened light. We get to a game that doesn’t make. Another problem with XYZ is that I can’t use New Minor Force which I’ve been playing for 25 years. And what do all the other bids mean?
