List of Characters The Devonshire Manor is an 18th century mansion on the outskirts of the town of Pinehorn. It was once owned by the wealthy Devonshire family and is a legendary estate to the citizens of Pinehorn. In their day, the Devonshires were beloved, treated as royalty, as they owned more than half of the businesses in town. The Devonshire Manor has exquisite architectural features, albeit weathered throughout the years. Weeds and high grass have long since replaced the flowering shrubs and ornamental trees that adorned the property in its day. The remaining Devonshire lineage passed away in the early 1900’s, leaving their estate in the hands of the town of Pinehorn. The townspeople have neglected to keep up with the place, mostly due to the legend that the Devonshires still roam the corridors at night. The mayor of Pinehorn has made it her quest to remodel and reinstate the Devonshire Manor as a historical bed and breakfast. She believes that the old estate can generate tourism and an income for the town of Pinehorn. Most of the townspeople stand behind her, although a few people are adamantly against her pursuit – stating that the place is haunted and should be left alone. The mayor cleaned up the dusty cobwebs and is hosting a fundraiser bash for the townspeople of Pinehorn. She hopes to raise enough funds for her remodeling endeavors. You have been invited to attend the event and this is where your story begins… Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 1 LIST OF CHARACTERS (12 either gender) Can be played as ‘all female’ , ‘all male’ or ‘co-ed’ NAME & SUGGESTED BRIEF BIO OCCUPATION ATTIRE DAKOTA GREEN College Student REQUIRED Either ASHTON HARVEY Website Designer REQUIRED Either PARKER TANKUS Guitarist REQUIRED Either DR. FUREN FEATHERS Veterinarian REQUIRED Either PEYTON CROWNLY Dental Receptionist REQUIRED Either JACKIE BEAN Chief Financial Officer REQUIRED Either Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Dakota Green is the nerdy math major at Pinehorn University. There isn’t an equation that this brainiac hasn’t conquered…or created. Dakota spends all of his/her spare time at the library reading books about historical mathematicians. There isn’t much that Dakota cares about outside of numerical equations. Casual, nerdy attire. Hair in a nerdy style (i.e. slick back, etc.). White socks, dark shoes and optional to have a calculator as a prop. Ashton Harvey is a dedicated friend and hardworking website designer. Ashton has designed websites for most businesses in the town of Pinehorn. The townspeople often call upon Ashton for help with anything computer related. Ashton lives with Reese Harvey and the siblings spend most of their free time playing video games. Casual attire. Parker Tankus is the antisocial guitarist for the band Armpit Anguish. Parker suffers from severe anger management issues and is extremely judgmental of others. These nasty qualities tend to anger not only the members of the band, but also anybody that is around Parker for more than two minutes. Parker also suffers from an intense fear of germs so getting too close to Parker is out of the question! Skintight brightly colored leggings, rock t-shirt, glam rock hair& makeup, and it is optional to have a guitar (real or fake) as a prop. Furen Feathers is the most annoying ‘one upper’ in Pinehorn. If you’ve done, said or tried anything cool, Furen Feathers is certain to have done it more often, said it already and tried it three times. Furen Feathers is new to Pinehorn, and not many people truly know the real Dr. Feathers. Lab jacket or scrubs. Optional to have a stethoscope and latex examination gloves. Peyton Crownly is the peculiar receptionist at Pinehorn Dental. A constant whistler, Peyton Crownly will always grace you with uncomfortable stares and periods of awkward silence during conversation. Pinehorn Dental is the only dental practice in Pinehorn, so you’ll eventually have to deal with this bizarre individual. Peyton also creates peculiar sculptures and is making quite the name in the town of Pinehorn as an artist. Lab jacket or scrubs. Optional to have a nametag with ‘Pinehorn Dental’ and new containers of dental floss, toothbrushes, etc. Jackie Bean is the Chief Financial Officer at the largest corporation in town, Greeto Lay Potato Chips, Incorporated, which employs over half the townspeople of Pinehorn. Jackie is a friendly person, but often rants about governmental conspiracies. Jackie’s fellow employees often speculate that Jackie wraps foil around windows, antennae or anything else to prevent the government from spying. Casual business attire (i.e. oxford shirt, pants) with reading glasses. Optional to have a business ledger and a calculator. Aluminum foil as an optional prop. Page 2 REESE HARVEY Personal Trainer REQUIRED Either RILEY CORALS Retired Fisherman Optional Either LOGAN ANTHONY University Registrar Optional Either DREW ADEL Social Media Consultant Optional Either OFFICER NELSON Police Officer Optional Either (Can have multiple players in this role) PAT COURIC Reporter, CBC News Optional Either (Can have multiple players in this role) Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Reese Harvey is the muscle bound personal trainer from Pinehorn Athletic Training Center. Reese loves to talk about one thing and one thing only – Reese Harvey. Reese spends an extraordinary amount of time playing video games with Ashton Harvey. Reese was a notorious high school bully many years ago. Unlucky townspeople witness this type of behavior manifest when Reese doesn’t get his/her way. Riley Corals is the arrogant and aggressive retired angler. Riley Corals owns the only marina in town and charges enormous rates to dock and house boats there. Nobody receives an invite to the Coral’s mansion on the hill, and the curious townspeople often wonder what Riley is hiding. Logan Anthony is the bossy registrar at Pinehorn University. Logan has a shady past, as s/he was an infamous tyrant during high school – along with Reese Harvey. Logan’s reputation hasn’t improved much as s/he spends the days finding ways to reject the applications of potential students to the university. Drew Adel is the highly intellectual social media consultant. A dependable hard worker, Drew is a true and loyal friend. That is if Drew’s obsessive-compulsive disorder doesn’t bother you. You’ll wonder how this crabby, introverted police officer ever thought s/he could protect and serve the people of Pinehorn. Surprisingly, Officer Nelson is one of the most highly decorated officers at the Pinehorn Police Department! One likely scenario is that Officer Nelson has simply intimidated everybody at the station, and everybody does as they are told by Officer Nelson. Pat Couric is always on top of the latest story and sometimes before the story happens! Pat’s an ultra-ambitious investigative reporter for the television station CBC and will stop at nothing to be first to get the scoop. Pat is rarely seen without a troupe of colleagues from CBC News. Smart phone with access to social media sites (i.e. Facebook. Twitter, etc.) as an optional prop. Police uniform. Optional to have fake guns, handcuffs, as props. Casual business attire (i.e. oxford shirt, pants). An optional microphone and notepad as props Page 3 *IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS: Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative, shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. To figure out who will be a ‘definite RSVP’, it is highly suggested to send a ‘save the date’ email out to your prospective guests way in advance of the party date so you can either eliminate those guests from your list who can’t make it (and therefore you will not assign them to ncels on you at the last minute? First, take a deep breath…it’s not the end of the world. 1. If you have an extra optional player that is coming to the party - give them a call and tell them they’ll need to switch characters. Hopefully, this isn’t the day of the party because no doubt, this player has his/her costume ready. However, you can allow them to wear the costume that they purchased or created, as their nametag will let the other guests know whom they are playing during the party. This isn’t a game with elaborate costumes. 2. No optional characters playing the game? Don’t panic. You will have to give us a call if you want to [email protected] (we make every attempt to monitor this email throughout the weekends and holidays) so we can tell you if your murderer / victim are still intact. We can tell you what to do if a certain required character cancels and you don’t have an optional character replacement. It might be all right as it is and if this is the case, you’ll need to post the missing required character’s clue on a wall for each round and just explain to the other guests what the deal is – “you’re missing a required player but all of the information is available to the guests in this character’s clue cards.” (Post the missing players’ clue card at the designated time for each round along with the other players - not all at once!) Full game instructions are available in the purchased game 3. If you don’t care about the surprise and / or have already looked at who the murderer (& victim) is by viewing the clue cards, simply ensure they are still playing. The victim is disclosed through their Round Two clue card and the murderer is disclosed on the Round Three solution card. You might need to switch one required character over to play the no-show murderer (or victim). If you do this, do as described in #2 and post the missing character’s clue cards on the wall during each round. You can add comedy to this situation and make a stuffed dummy of this character. Post the clues to where the chest would be or in the hands! You’ll be surprised as your guests might start to ‘mingle’ with this effigy in good humor. NAMETAGS the player nametags are on the following pages. There are also optional nametags for expandable duplicate players. JACKIE BEAN CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER PEYTON CROWNLY DENTAL RECEPTIONIST Each character will have one in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 4 Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 5 DEVONSHIRE MANOR HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for a fun time at the Devonshire Manor in the town of Pinehorn with your purchase of the The Harvey’s Volume 1: Murder at Devonshire Manor game from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an exciting murder mystery where the players act the roles of intriguing personalities while sleuthing the captivating story line. You can never go wrong with a MY MYSTERY PARTY game for any occasion! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues, slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round and you can purchase the exact amount needed for your game on the www.MyMysteryparty.com site in the Mystery Prop Emporium section. For economy’s sake, an alternative is to scroll the clues and fasten with a ribbon. Be sure to label the outside of each scroll with the character/round. In these instructions, however, we will assume you are using the envelope method for each character, each round. Full game instructions are available in the purchased game If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues or the final answer key at the end of this document. For a complete surprise, you can elect the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the mymysteryparty.com site and we will send you the clues in sealed envelopes and the rest of prepared game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.). We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including a thunderstorm ambiance 10 minute sound wav to play in the background, authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 6 balloons, mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim t-shirts, and even instrumental rap beats as a downloadable mp3 for the optional but highly suggested bonus game rap contest. There is a ‘Do You Think You Can You Dance’ mp3 track for the Do You Think You Can Dance challenge as well. The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS & STARTERS: these optional pre-game starters and task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These starters and tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. APPETIZER (COCKTAILS 4 ADULTS) HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests. DESSERT, AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert. Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You also do not have to serve dessert – again, it is only a suggestion. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve snacks/appetizers the entire time. For further questions, check out our FAQ web page at www.mymysteryparty.com/frasqu.html If your question is not listed in our FAQ, contact us at the email addresses below. Mystery Questions: mailto:[email protected] Web based Questions: [email protected] OPTIONAL PRE-GAME STARTER Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party www.YourMysteryParty.com/toga website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character descriptions included and a link (web address) to the Your Mystery Party website. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party as well as the history of the town and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuthers’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery Party site prior to the party. The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. You can email these invites to your guests to save paper costs. This optional pre-game round is to be implemented approximately one week before the party. Please note that this round is designed to generate pre-game excitement and is not necessary to solve the mystery. The ways to deliver these starters are as follows: ‘ Full game instructions are available in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 7 ROUND ONE - MEET & MINGLE APPETIZER HOUR Round one – appetizer / cocktail hour begins as the guests arrive. DÉCOR: GUEST ARRIVAL GAME PLAY: Full game instructions are available in the purchased game OPTIONAL BUT FUN: PROP LIST: . ROUND TWO – DAUNTING DINNER HOUR PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, scotch tape, host supplied white non-toxic face makeup (optional but funny and suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape if you have purchased these items (again, optional but funny and suggested). If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The victim will be instructed in their round two clue card - after the pre-murder clues have been implemented and as the host reads the results of the scramble challenge - to go to the nearest restroom to become the victim by applying the white face makeup on their face (optional), using Scotch tape to adhere the victim sign to their chest and if the optional victim t-shirt is available - to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the optional authentic crime scene barrier tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when the guests see the fully decorated victim! Full game instructions are available in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 8 Full game instructions are available in the purchased game CONCLUSION OF THE ROUND: At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period (i.e. 5-10 minutes) in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the 'Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet' . Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. You collect them so the guests do not get tempted to change their original guesses of whodunit once they hear what others have to say during the accusation round. If you trust your guests won’t change their answers &/or there is no pride or end of the game prizes on the line – there’s no need to collect the murder mystery investigation sheets from your guests. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready! Clue cards for Round Two in sealed and labeled envelopes. The forensic analysis report in a sealed envelope The victim sign for the victim’s clue in Round Two The Mystery Investigation Sheets . Scotch Tape (to adhere the victim sign and the murder weapon to the victim). Non-toxic white face makeup for the victim (the victim’s clue will describe what to do with it; optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium). Victim t-shirt (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) and crime scene tape to decorate the victim (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) Any of the optional bonus game activity props (see bonus game instructions). SURPRISING SOLUTION ROUND– DESSERT & ‘THE BIG REVEAL’ ACCUSATIONS: After you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-by-one accuse who they believe the MURDERER is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their guess of the MURDERER‘S motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker on the Best Actor/Actress award. Full game instructions are available in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 9 HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome costume and have been told to play your role. Now what? The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened. Full game instructions are available in the purchased game From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a ‘hypocritical police officer,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 10 OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: Cut the task strips out below and slip them into envelopes (with or without the tickets above). Below on the pre-game task sheets, fill in your guests’ preferred contact information (i.e. email, phone) so they will be able to contact each other. If you are playing with the expandable players, only give each ‘team leader’ a pre-game task sheet. Give the contact information for their respective expandable team members and ask that they forward any correspondence they receive and /or copy their team member on any emails/text messages sent to other players. IMPORTANT: If any of the optional players are not being played in your game, write ‘DISREGARD THIS TASK’ in the contact information space. CHARACTER NAME IS HERE OPTIONAL - for some pre-party fun, contact (email, phone, etc.) the following guests in the week leading up to the party: Contact the guest playing Furen Feathers and say that you are so glad that Pinehorn finally has a veterinarian! You were tired of driving thirty minutes away to Celtic Falls to get your fish treated for depression! (Contact info :___________________________________________________________________________________) Each character will have a pregame task sheet in the purchased game Contact the guest playing Riley Corals and say that your father said some things had been shuffled around in his boat that was parked in his boat slip at Riley’s marina. Does Riley have security at the marina? (Contact info :__________________________________________________________________________________) Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and be prepared for serious fun! Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 11 ROUND ONE CLUES – CUT OUT, SLIP INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL WITH THE CHARACTER AND ROUND. CHARACTER NAME IS HERE – ROUND ONE CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information with whomever you choose: You are a huge fan of the band Armpit Anguish. Speak to Parker Tankus about how the band is doing. Talk to him/her about his/her band’s new song In Love with a Puffer Fish. The flu has been going around town lately and you don’t want to catch it. The symptoms are a high fever, chills and muscle aches. No nausea and vomiting, but the fever, chills and aches are enough to keep sanitizer on your hands! You are in excellent physical shape as you are a Zoomba Fitness instructor at the Pinehorn Recreation Center. PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL Each character will have a round one clue card in the purchased game Your character is the highly intellectual social media consultant. You are dependable and loyal and are a great friend. However, you do suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder and that tends to drive your friends crazy when you have an attack. You do use your clients Twitter and Facebook accounts to market your services. You haven’t been caught yet, but it is working because you are getting more clients without having to pay for advertising. During the mystery, your character must be honest and not make up any potentially mystery-altering clues in addition to those provided to you. You do not, however, have to share the clues that you collect with other guests. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 12 ROUND 2 CLUES – cut out, slip into envelopes and label with the character and round. Character name is here - ROUND TWO Pre-Murder Clues You recently had an art sculpture of a large, steel graduation cap installed by CHARACTER NAME at your home office where you conduct most of your business – including where you negotiate bribery deals for potential students to be accepted into Pinehorn University. Should you be concerned? Ask around to see what others think about it. You should confess to a few people that you trust about your bribery deals. You think you will feel better if you get it off your chest. Bottling up such stress can be difficult. However, only tell the people you trust. A few people seem stressed right now. Find out what their problems are and see if you can help. Post- Murder Evidence & Alibi (Blood Type AB-) A good strategy would be to put together a time line to see where everybody was prior to and during the time of the murder. This will eliminate a number of suspects who couldn’t have committed the crime because they have the alibi of being in the Magnolia Ballroom! At a crime scene, there could be more than one blood type discovered. If this is the case here, the second blood type that doesn’t match the victim might belong to the murderer. You have no alibi if your fingerprints are on the murder weapon. You did go out into the hallway to make a call about 10 minutes prior to the victim leaving the Magnolia Ballroom. However, you were only gone for 2 minutes. You know that CHARACTER NAME AND CHARACTER NAME were not in the Magnolia Ballroom around the time the victim was murdered. Each character will have a round two clue card in the purchased game FORENSIC ANALYSIS FOR ROUND TWO. The forensic report is in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 13 Victim sign: place with the victim’s items (i.e. the sign below and the optional items such as the authentic barrier crime scene tape, white face makeup, and the victim t-shirt. All items available in the Mystery Prop Emporium on the www.MyMysteryParty.com site) in the nearest restroom prior to the party. Hide this sign in a cabinet or any location in the restroom where a guest won’t stumble upon it during the earlier rounds. Dakota Green will read his/her solution card first and then the guests are to follow the order given at the bottom of each player’s solution card. For the order in which the characters are to read their solutions, you can view the answer key on pages 66-68. CHARACTER NAME IS HERE FINAL SOLUTION ROUND THREE – READ WHEN YOU ARE TOLD IT IS YOUR TURN. When it is your turn, say the following to the group: “Yea, I figured out tonight that I was probably about to be blackmailed. I do accept bribes to get into Pinehorn University. Nevertheless, that’s how the other big league colleges do it - so why not us? Peyton was most likely recording all of my bribes through that steel graduation cap sculpture she installed in my home but I suppose I am safe now. Well, that is until the cops get all of her tapes at his/her home. Wait, I gotta go! I’ve got some tapes to destroy!” The following characters are to read their solutions next in this order: (Skip over characters that are not guests at this party and go to the next).
