CIS Community News
This month CIS
will begin piloting a new assessment, the Measures of
Academic Progress or
MAP \with our students
currently in grades three and
six. Eventually this test will reMs. Rita
place the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
(ITBS) currently given to students in
grades currently 2-8. MAP are achievement tests designed to measure growth in
student learning. What makes the MAP test
unique is that it is a computer based assessment which adapts and analyzes the student’s
response and will select the next question depending on the child’s understanding of the
concept. An added benefit is that the results
are provided in a timely manner to aid in instruction within the classroom. Score results
break down each broad category into specific
skills and show the student’s relative strengths
and areas of improvement. Parents of students in grades 3 and 6 will receive further
communication regarding the pilot assessment
in the coming week. Additional information
regarding the MAP assessment can be found at
the following website: http://www.nwea.org/

Counselor’s Corner
Dear Parents,
As part of our ongoing commitment to encourage respectful and kind behavior
and address bullying, CIS is going to participate in the International Stand-Up to
Bullying Day on May 31, 2013. We will tailor our participation and activities to be
appropriate for all age levels across our campus.
Ms. Katie
Ms. Siv
The Early Childhood and Elementary School will participate in the following programming:
Keep in Mind- Be Kind!!
Elementary Counselor, Ms. Siv, has worked with the
EC and ES staff to tailor our participation and activities
for the appropriate developmental levels of our Early Childhood and Elementary School students. The first block in the
morning will be devoted to a variety of activities tailored for each
class by the teacher. Some of these may include: making friendship bracelets, making puppets for role plays, having a word wall
of compliments for friends, reading books about friends with follow up chats and activities. In our Early Childhood
classes teachers will celebrate and focus on “Being a Good Friend: Think Twice Be Nice!!” Elementary Classes will
celebrate “Stand-Up Day”, with activities and discussions about when and how to stand up for yourself and others in a
variety of situations.
The Secondary School will participate in the following programming:
Expect Respect!
All Secondary students will participate in the “Stand-Up Day” and students will
work with their teachers, and me, on the “Expect Respect!” curriculum. This
programming is designed to achieve the following objectives: Help students
discriminate respectful from non-respectful behavior, communicate to a person
if they are not being respectful, how to be a helpful not hurtful bystander, and
how to get help from an adult if they are being bullied or witness bullying behavior. Additionally, students age 13 and older, from around Grand Cayman, were invited to participate in a Leadership program (coordinated by Family Resource Center) this Saturday, May 11th from 9:00am-2:00pm in the ARC to
learn more about how to prevent bullying at their school.
We will continue to encourage, teach, and model respectful and kind behavior at CIS in an effort to make our school a
better and more positive place for everyone.
Have a good weekend.
Keep care,
Ms. Katie

Family Resource Center) will explore bullying, what
role each person plays in bullying, and how we can
start changing behaviors that perpetuate bullying.

MOSES’ BILLBOARD HAS BEEN LAUNCHED!
A few weeks back in the Newsflash, Moses was
recognized for being chosen for the PROUD OF
THEM award, an initiative of The National Youth
Commission and the Cayman Islands Government
who were publically recognizing the positive
achievements of young people of the Cayman Islands. The award was being recognized on a billboard for 6 months. Moses’s billboard is now up.
You can see it if you head up along West Bay

are proud of you, Moses!
