Under 9 Tee ball Rules To maxim ize participation at all levels and all sectors of the gam e by providing developm ent and up skillin g opportunities for all. 1 DIAMOND Distance between bases15m. “Catcher only area” 3m area around home base see diagram. Catcher’s cone & Batting/DugOut cone. Balls: 11” Flexiball. Batting tee (placed in front of home base) & 3 bases, tee ball bats. SHOES – must be worn, NO bare feet, sandals or sandals. Gloves are preferred, but optional either all have a glove or none. THE GAME: Can be 2 or more complete innings (Bat-Field / Bat-Field etc or vice-versa) or 1 hour. The ball is DEAD if it rolls out of play and beyond the “Catcher only area” behind the diamond and RUNNERS MUST STOP AT THE BASE THEY ARE RUNNING. BATTING: Batters and runners are only SAFE if they reach the base before they are tagged or they beat the ball to the base if FORCED to run. They are OUT if the ball beats them to the base that they are FORCED or they are tagged with the hand holding the ball before they reach base. Base runners can only be FORCED to run because the batter has hit a “fair” batted ball and they have to run. 1. On grassed diamonds, place a cone 3m clear and to the right of the batting tee behind the diamond where the batters and catcher can safely be out of the way of the batter while batting. 2. The batting order to remain the same throughout the whole game & substitutions will bat in the same position when he enters the game. EACH BATTER MAY BAT ONLY ONCE IN EACH BATTING INNING. Only the fielding positions will change. 3. The batter can swing the bat ONLY 3 times to hit the ball off the tee and outside the “Catcher only area” and inside the 1st & 3rd base lines (foul ball lines). After the each missed attempt the coach may step in to coach the batter with their batting or adjust the tee if required. IF the 3rd swing is a miss the batter is OUT and has to go to the back of the line and wait to field, so make every SWING count. 4. When the LAST BATTER comes up, then the Coach of the Batting team MUST yell out “LAST BATTER”. When the last batter hits the ball, the batter and runners MUST RUN as fast as they can until the “Catcher” lifts the ball above his/her head and yells STOP to stop the runners. The run’s count only if they TOUCH the Home base before the “Catcher” does this action. 5. A HIT Inside the diamond by the batter puts the batter and runners at r isk and may be put OUT so must run as fast as possible to their next base. ALL runners must STOP when the Catcher has the ball and is ready to place it on the Tee. 6. A HIT Outside the diamond (either on the full or rolls thr ough the infield) by the batter, the batter and all other runner’s on bases are at risk of being put out, but MUST advance on the hit until the ball is inside the “Catcher only area”. The “Catcher” has the ball and yells “STOP” to stop the runners. The runners MUST RETURN to the base they held immediately when the “Catcher” has the ball and is ready to place it on the Tee. BASE RUNNING 1. After the batter has hit the ball outside the “Catcher only area” they MUST run the bases in order (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and touch the Home base NOT the batting Tee. ALL RUNNERS MUST TOUCH THE BASES IN ORDER. They cannot dodge or change his running path to avoid a tag, but they can stop running to make the fielder either play him or play another. Dodging or changing the running path to avoid a tag is an automatic OUT 2. The Coach or up to two helpers may take position by 1st & 3rd base to aid the runners around the diamond and stop them when the “Catcher” has the ball to place on the tee and on the LAST BATTER when the catcher yells STOP. 3. RUNS COUNT when the runners run the bases in order and TOUCH home base NOT the batting tee. 4. RUNS DON’T COUNT on the LAST BATTER call if the “Catcher” fields the ball, raises it above his/her head and yells STOP before the runners have not touched home base. The fielders have to get the ball to the “Catcher” fast. All batters/runners called OUT. Fielding Positions Outfielder Positions Responsibilities' 1—Pitcher 2—Catcher 3—1st base 4—2nd base 5—3rd base 6—Shortstop 7—Left field 8—Centre field 9—Right field 7—Left field—backs-up hits that passes by 5 & 6 and missed throws to 3rd base by the infield and 2nd base when the ball is thrown from Right field 8—Centre field—backs-up hits that passes through the middle of the infield and missed throws to 2nd base 9—Right field—backs-up hits that passes 3 & 4 and missed throws to 1st base by the infield and 2nd base when the ball is thrown from Left field. Infielder Positions Responsibilities 1—Pitcher—backs-up throws to the catcher after the LAST BATTER hits the ball, also covers majority of throws to the cut-off at 2nd base 3 & 5—1st & 3rd bases—backs-up throws to home if no runners on base 4—2nd base—backs-up missed throws to 1st & 2nd base 6— Shortstop—backs-up missed throws to 2nd & 3rd base FIELDING – The fielders are allowed to put OUT the batter-runner and all other runners forced to advance because of the batted ball. The aim is to play the lead-runner and try to put him out, and then try to get another runner out etc. See the diagram below for fielding positions and rotations. 1. Place a cone 3m clear and to the left of the batting tee; this is where the Catcher will stand until the batter has hit the ball outside the “Catcher only area”. This is also called the “DugOut” and will also be where the batting team lines up during their batting inning. 2. A Coach and up to two helpers may take the field to assist the players, they may STOP THE BALL ONLY. 3. POSITIONS:1st Batter = Pitcher, 2nd Batter = Catcher, 3rd Batter = Between 1st Base & HB, 4th Batter = Between 1st & 2nd Base, 5th Batter = Between 3rd Base & HB, 6th Batter = Between 2nd & 3rd Bases, 7th Batter = Left Outfield, 8th Batter = Centre Outfield, 9th Batter = Right Outfield. See the rotation diagram below. 4. The ball MUST be hit outside the “Catcher only area” before it can be fielded and the batter has to run. Once past the “Catcher only area” the in-field may put the batter-runner out at 1st base if they field the ball, and toss or throw the ball to 1st base before the runner reaches it. The runner MUST BEAT the throw to the base to be SAFE. All other runners forced to run on the batted ball may also be played out if the ball beats them to the base. 5. Runners may also be TAGGED OUT by a fielder with ball in the same hand tagging the runner before they reach their base. Once all play has ceased and when the “Catcher” has the ball the runners must return to the base they last touched before the next batter can bat except for the LAST BATTER when the batting coach yell’s “LAST BATTER”. The fielding teams’ goal is to STOP play. The Catcher must have the ball and yell STOP. All runners that do not touch the Home Base before the catcher performs this action are deemed to have been left on base and should not count toward the team score. SIDE AWAY – The teams swap (batting team goes out to field and the fielding team comes in to bat) after the “Catcher” yells STOP when he/she fields the ball on the LAST BATTERS hit. These rules are to help the catchers communicate to their team and coaches to also communicate to their batters and fielders 6.
