November “Civic & Community Engagement” 4th- 6th ACTIVITY: History Trivia WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Learn how to work as a team Understand history Expand cultural awareness NEEDS: Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation Projector to show slides Candy Paper & Pencil/Pen (Tally Sheet) Stuffed animal/ Buzzer/ Bell DIRECTIONS: 1. Go to Microsoft PowerPoint and create a presentation 2. For each slide, add a picture of a famous and well known historical figure, place or event i.e.: Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, Harriet Tubman, Christopher Columbus, The White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C., Mayflower, etc. 3. Write a question for each picture I.e.: Where does the President live? What city is the capitol of our country? What ship did the Pilgrims sail to the New World on? Who discovered America? 4. For the game, split the class into two even teams 5. Have them line up 6. One person from each time will go head to head (like Family Feud) to answer the question 7. Have a mentor or teacher read the question with the picture accompanying them and let the students either hit a buzzer, bell or grab a stuffed animal when they know the answer 8. The student who buzzes in first gets to try and answer 9. If the student does not know the answer, the other student at the front gets a turn 10. If both can’t answer, then the first student may ask his/her team for help 11. If the first team doesn’t answer, then the second student may ask the team for help 12. If both fail to answer, the point is lost, the question is answered by an adult and the game continues 13. A mentor or teacher should tally scores during the game 14. Following all of the questions, the team with the most points gets a candy reward
