The Origins of
Interactive Play
The name YALP is PLAY in reverse. Yalp creates sport and
play areas that fit the philosophy of ‘a new way to play’. With
equipment that fit the needs and desires of present day needs
and desires.
The world is constanty evolving. Children of todays generation
are used to smart phones, tablets and video games. The way
kids these days experience and demand of outdoor play is
hugely different from how it used to be before. Interactive
playsets combine the positive aspects of video games
(excitement, hand-eye coordination) with the positive aspects
of outdoor play (being outdoors, exercise, pushing limits and
the development of social skills). The Yalp interactive playsets
combine “the best of both worlds” into one.
Yalp launched World’s first interactive playset in 2006; with
great success. The Yalp Sona. Soon thereafter the Yalp Sutu,
Yalp Fono, Yalp Memo and Yalp Toro followed suit. Today, over

The Outdoor DJ-Table
The Yalp Fono outdoor DJ-table meet teenagers’ demands, including the perpetual use of mobile phones, the
listening to and sharing of music, and of course socializing and hanging out with friends. It works very simply: have
music playing from your phone speakers, and put on the designated spot on the DJ-table. The Yalp Fono picks up
the sounds, and amplifies it. Next, music can be mixed and effects can be added. The Yalp Fono stays up to date, as
teenagers bring their own music.
A real DJ always needs an audience, and a music hungry crowd needs a DJ that plays their favorite music.
The Yalp Fono is therefore extendable to a full hangout spot, including a roof, chill out bars, benches, and a dance
floor, It fits perfectly next to sports arenas, basketball fields, and urban settings. This way it tailors to a broad
teenage audience.

Yalp Fono Design Edition
Properly equipped public area facilitate social
cohesion. In collaboration with urban and park
furniture producer Grijsen, Yalp developed the
´Design Version`of the Yalp Fono. Solid wooden
street furniture is joined to steel frameworks and
concrete bases, and of course the outdoor DJtable, which turns ´regular´ open area into a true
asset. The combination of wood, concrete and steel
gives this design edition a tough, solid, yet refined
look.
The Yalp Fono is available in various pre-defined
formats, but also in indivually customizable
elements. This allows you to “build your own Yalp
Fono.” The concrete DJ-Table is the base, to which
one or multiple benches, chill bars, tables, and even
a dancefloor can be added.

The Interactive Dance and Play Arch
The Yalp Sona is an Interactive Dance & Play Arch. More specifically; it is an audio-guided play set, especially
designed for the outdoors. It has a motion detection camera which sees exactly what children on the play floor
underneath are doing. The floor does not contain any sensors!
As perhaps the most versatile and inclusive interactive playset, over 100 have been placed in schools, public

The Yalp Sona meets many needs of the Health Care Sector.
There are countless examples of lesser abled children or
demented seniors that get totally in their element underneath
the Sona. Examples are a child that would usually remain
unreactive in every day situations, completely lit up when
playin underneath the arch. Another child with heavy autism
let go, moved her arms, danced and smiled! The floor is
entirely wheelchair accesssible, and the speed and volume at
which the games are played can be adjusted.
Seniors
Also for seniors, the Yalp Sona has become a very important
Health Care innovation. Exercising to the musically guided

Double Yalp Sutu in
a Sports Arena
The Yalp Sutu is the ideal upgrade for the standard
Multi Use Gaming Area (MUGA); also known as the
Sports Arena. This allows for arrays of new possibilities
in terms of games, and it allows for new dimensions
being added to existing team sports like Football,
Tennis or Hand Ball. Thanks to its internet connection
entirely new ways of competition become a reality.
Think about FC Barcalona in Spain, playing a game of
Sutu against Manchester United in the UK. Although
still in the R&D process, such scenarios will hopefully
soon beome a reality.
Sports Arena’s are NOT required in order to make full
use of a Yalp Sutu. Yalp Sutu is a stand alone product.

YALP TORO
The Interactive Sports Field
The Yalp Toro was originally developed from the core idea of “Professional Sports Training through Play.” This was done
in direct relation with Olympic Gold winning Field Hockey coach Marc Lammers. Although he used to play outdoors
every day when he was young, nowadays he would find children behind their video game console. He found that both
kids and adults that train for sports would benefit greatly from “messing around” with the ball in playful manner.
The Yalp Toro is a colorful field, wherein the traditional goals have been replaced by interactive panels. The goals with
LED-lighting and touch-sensitive panels light up and react to (ball) impact. The shaved off corners and 4 opposite
goals facilitate maximum fun, exertion and tactical game-play.
Yalp Toro games:
Bottle Soccer
Every player defends their goal, while attacking
other goals. As they get hit, goals ‘drain’:
coloured LEDs start fading. The ‘draining’ can
be stopped by hitting the goal again. The last
player wins.
Shifter
Hit the goal of your colour. But
unexpectedly the goals change colour!
Pay attention and seize the right
moment to score.
GoalPlay
Score within 2 minutes. Goals are
switched after every point scored.
Switch
Four teams with each their own colour are
playing. Each team has two points. If a goal is
hit, that team will lose a point and the other
three goals will switch places.
Red-Green
When hit, each goal switches colour from
red to green. Green and Red teams take
each other on, with the aim to turn all 4
goals in their own teams’ colour.

What is interactive play?
Interactive play meets at a point of overlap between the digital and physical worlds: “video gaming in real life.”

traditional playsets do. Of course outdoor play is at least equally as important, and allows for benefits such as

Electronics in the
outdoors - won’t

All of they interactive playsets are specifically designed
and built for the public outdoors, and for the heavy duty use
that is expected at commercial locations. All electronics
are safely tucked away behind reinforced steel housing, and
every element has been rigorously tested within extreme
environments, and temperatures. The more than 300
placed interactives world wide (from the extreme heat and

“The remote control is very important, and is something we spent a lot of development time on. Our goal was to keep it
simple. If someone can use a smartphone, they can remote control their interactive playset. Sound volume, on and
off times, and even game selection can all be done from a laptop or mobile phone. You can even read very advanced user
statistics. It’s very simple! About these statistics: they show their is an immense amount of playing going on at
recreation facilities. Two examples of a rainy October month? The Yalp Sutu at Center Parcs de Eemhof was played over
4 hours non-stop / day, and the Yalp Sona at Camping grounds De Paal over 3 hours. That is pure non-stop play....On
summer days it’s easily double those figures. Such frequency and length of playing is absolutely unheard of with regular
