What does respect mean to you? How would you describe respect? How is respect related to being a good person? How can you apply respect to your life and/or relationships? June 2017 Respect- a courteous and thoughtful regard for people's feelings. ◦ Examples: being kind to someone you may not care for, listening to your “elders,” using polite language/mannerisms Tolerance- willingness to recognize and respect the beliefs or practices of others. ◦ Examples: being kind to someone even if you have nothing in common, acknowledging other’s differences and accepting them. 1. Find a place to sit with your group ◦ Bring your notes and other belongings with you. This will be your seat for the remainder of class today. 2. Come up with a Group Name ◦ Write it on the top of the provided poster board (save room on the poster board to write other information) ◦ Share with class In your INB, take notes on the following: Biological sex- an individual’s anatomy (Male/Female). When a baby is born, the doctor says the baby is male or female. This is the baby’s biological sex. Biological sex is based on chromosomes, either XX (female) or XY (male). Gender identity- the way in which an individual chooses to identify, usually based on what society says is acceptable. ◦ Male, Female or Neither People usually know their gender identity when they are very little, before they start kindergarten. People’s gender identity is sometimes the same as their biological sex, and sometimes different. A person’s gender identity is cisgender if it matches the person’s biological sex. A person’s gender identity is transgender if it does not match the person’s biological sex. Sexual orientation- a person's sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are romantically attracted. ◦ Heterosexual, LGBTQ Sexual orientation is determined by whether a person is attracted to the same gender, another gender, or all genders. Some examples of sexual orientation are gay, lesbian, bisexual, straight, queer, etc. Sexual behavior describes what someone does sexually. Sometimes sexual behavior matches a person’s sexual orientation, and sometimes it does not. For example, a person who identifies as straight might have had sex or made out with someone of the same gender. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Respect – Being accepted and allowed to be who you are. Safety – Feeling safe both emotionally and physically. Support – Caring for you and want what is best for you. Individuality – Feeling like you can be yourself; after all, being an individual is what makes you, you! Fairness and Equality – Having an equal say in your relationships. Acceptance –Friends or girlfriend/boyfriend accepting you for whom you really are. Honesty and Trust – Honesty builds trust. You can’t have a healthy relationship without trust Communication – Talking face-to-face (not just by text) about your feelings. In relationships, people can have a variety of different characteristics. Write down 3: ◦ Age ◦ Disability ◦ National origin ◦ Race ◦ Marital Status ◦ Sexual Orientation ◦ Gender It is important to treat EVERYONE with respect, regardless of their differences. Talk with your group members. Record your group’s responses on the poster board. 2 minutes! 1.What are three characteristics/traits of people who are respectful? 2. What type of language do respectful people use? 3. How can people show they are respectful through their actions? With your group, talk about the following question. “How can you, as students at Glencoe, treat others with respect and make everyone feel safe?” Write down two examples on your poster board. How students at Glencoe can show respect (Words or Actions): 1. 2. In the first box, do the following: Set a personal goal to treat partners with respect and to be treated with respect. Specific- Who, what, when, where, why Measurable- Time spent each day with activity Attainable- Can you realistically do this? Relevant- Why do you want to do this? Time-bound- When is the final day you will do this? *Your goal should be at least 3-6 sentences! As a group, share your smart goal with one other group. Have that group make corrections to your SMART goal in the “Corrections” ◦ What is it missing? What needs to be added to the goal? How can it be improved? ◦ Write the corrections on your partner’s paper Specific- Who, what, when, where, why Measurable- Time spent each day with activity Attainable- Can you realistically do this? Relevant- Why do you want to do this? Time-bound- When is the final day you will do this? Using your feedback, make corrections to your original SMART goal. Write those corrections in your third box. On the back of your “Bumper Sticker Handout”, do the following: Read pages 302-306 Answer questions 1-5 on page 306. Use the bumper sticker template Instructions: Design a bumper sticker about respect. Include the following on the bumper sticker: The word Respect A phrase or slogan for why EVERYONE should treat others with respect Three words OR pictures that describe respect. Add Color!
