June 2017

Respect- a courteous and thoughtful
regard for people's feelings.
◦ Examples: being kind to someone you may
not care for, listening to your “elders,”
using polite language/mannerisms

Tolerance- willingness to recognize
and respect the beliefs or practices of
others.
◦ Examples: being kind to someone even if
you have nothing in common,
acknowledging other’s differences and
accepting them.


1. Find a place to sit with your group
◦ Bring your notes and other belongings
with you. This will be your seat for the
remainder of class today.
2. Come up with a Group Name
◦ Write it on the top of the provided poster
board (save room on the poster board to

In your INB, take notes on the following:
 Biological sex- an individual’s anatomy
(Male/Female).
 When a baby is born, the doctor says the
baby is male or female. This is the
baby’s biological sex.
 Biological sex is based on chromosomes,
either XX (female) or XY (male).

Gender identity- the way in which an
individual chooses to identify, usually
based on what society says is acceptable.
◦ Male, Female or Neither




People usually know their gender
identity when they are very little, before
they start kindergarten.
People’s gender identity is sometimes
the same as their biological sex, and
sometimes different.
A person’s gender identity is cisgender if
it matches the person’s biological sex.
A person’s gender identity is
transgender if it does not match the
person’s biological sex.

Sexual orientation- a person's sexual identity
in relation to the gender to which they are
romantically attracted.
◦ Heterosexual, LGBTQ


Sexual orientation is determined by whether a
person is attracted to the same gender,
another gender, or all genders.
Some examples of sexual orientation are gay,
lesbian, bisexual, straight, queer, etc.


Sexual behavior describes
what someone does sexually.
Sometimes sexual
behavior matches a person’s
sexual orientation, and
sometimes it does not. For
example, a person who
identifies as straight might
have had sex or made out
with someone of the same
gender.
