THE EVIDENCE GAPS
The organization came into existence at the right time when the youth became directionless
and had nothing to keep themselves but it is because there was lack of resources and
facilities so there was a NEED for all our activities to be put in place around our communities
as part of minimizing illegal activities especially with our teenagers even though that’s not
enough but the few participating have their focus diverted to positive creativity .This is a
good move despite the challenges of lack of funds or sponsorships but in all fairness
education – communities – society – health and wellbeing will come out tops at the end of
the day hence we decided to be vigilant on this one.
Makasana Community Development (MCD) came as a blessing in disguise for the
community of Soweto, as it was easy to notice the impact these activities have brought,
since it became evident and clear that the missing part in this community was getting more
participation and less talking. The was a concern from local stakeholders such as churches,
local businesses, schools, federations and other concerned locals who were complaining
about our youth who had no interest in participating on social activities and doing nothing
for any organization on volunteer basis.
Such activities we offer brings about equality and diversity to those who are most actively
involved and participation in these activities becomes an investment and tend to be from
most privileged parts of society and has changed the perception of each individual about
their future.
MCD’s task as an organization falls with the best interest of the community at heart so every
means has to be made to bring something positive out of this initiative and all it takes is to
look in program areas such as: training, community engagement, monitoring and
evaluation.
“Our Mission is to use sports such as soccer, netball, volleyball and other sporting codes as
well as arts and culture as a tool to beat negative recreation, and empower youth and
women”.
THE OBJECTIVES
-To realize the ideals of mass participation in sports and recreation
-To bridge the gap between various sports stakeholders in the community
-To develop and nurture talent at grass root level
-To use sports as a tool for educating youth and communities about the value of sports
and life skills in building a brighter future.
KEYS TO SUCCESS





To increase compliance which prescripts with good governance.
Improved effectiveness of our services.
Maintain good communications skills between stakeholders.
Providing services on time with good quality.
Creating awareness campaign in order to familiarize ourselves with the community’s
needs that are related to our mandate.
The Organization has divided its operations into four (4) categories/projects that we use as
guidelines and are mandated to our trainers so as to give them a clear view of what is
expected from each one of them and they are as follows:
1. A Childhood Development
2. Scholars DEN
3. Gugothandayo (Senior Citizens)
4. Makasana Hot Spot
All four modules are incorporated into one but manageable easy to access program run by
our dedicated and committed coaches / trainers / instructors.
These programs are much easier to accomplish especially because they are categorized so it
makes it easier to juggle around the schedule in terms of shifting focus from one program to
another without losing ground as they are explained below:
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
The Early childhood development program involves day care centers and Grade Rs from
parts of Soweto which is Emdeni, Naledi, Tladi and Zola where our trainers are giving the
kids some light exercise for free from 08h00 am until 10h00 am and only 15 minutes session
is allowed per Centre, each trainer is able to do between 4 & 5 each Centre’s a day from
Monday to Friday it depends on the distance in between. Currently we have 24 daycare
Centre’s on our database that
includes Grade Rs from
primary schools where our
sessions are a bit longer taking
30 minutes or more it’s
because our sessions
sometimes include cultural
dance, music and acting
depending on what service
does the client wants and our
aim is to spread these activities to other parts of Soweto or even the whole country.
THE SCHOLARS DEN
This directed at learners and educators with an aim to prepare them for their own schools
‘competitive games and this makes it easier for the coaches to select right participants. The
Sporting hype at schools' premises looks different after we have introduced our sports
program and this is raging from primary right up to secondary schools, currently we have 3
primary schools from Emdeni on our database we help with training soccer, netball ,
Aerobics and Life skills through Sports.
Our sessions on this one are training
place from Tuesdays until Thursdays
sessions are happening from 14h30 to
an hour each school per day doing
netball and aerobics, each school gets
sessions per week.

GUGOTHANDAYO (Senior Citizens)
This is the senior citizens
platform where
the gogos are given an
opportunity to
exercise doing some light
aerobics and a bit
of netball , these programs
are designed to
ward off old age illnesses
they assemble in
the mornings of Mondays ,
Tuesdays and
Fridays between 08h00
and 09h00,
thanks to this initiative that
the senior citizens
get an opportunity to take
full control of
their health status seriously and they enjoy each other’s company , that seems to have an
impact in their lives when it comes to their social lifestyle and networking among the oldies
in the community. During events grannies participate in our aerobics sessions and fun walks
as part of healthy mind healthy body awareness campaign.
MAKASANA HOT SPOT
On this one the organization is reaching out to the rest of the community members starting
with the after school sessions between 16h30 until 17h30 and during school holidays but
another way of getting everybody
active it when there is an event that we stage on specific dates.
We have formed a partnership with a local team Emdeni Youth Development and the
Netball team and our coaches are responsible for training all its 5 divisions from u - 9,u 11,u - 13, u -15 & under-17 in soccer and also we have two netball divisions the u -11 and
under-15s .
All the teams soccer and netball are subjected to do both field training and aerobics sessions
which means there's three days field training and one aerobics session per division rotating
teams under 9s and under 11s are an exceptions to the latter and these sessions takes
place at Impumelelo Primary School.
The organization stages events on regular basis and community members get the chance to
participate during these events that involves soccer, netball, volleyball and cultural activities
and it has worked well as a strategy to recruiting new members for our gym class and still
win our wellness crusade - the healthy mind healthy body campaign. There are few factors
that could be useful to the best interest of the organization and benefit the community, the
question is what are we hoping to achieve and what impact is this initiative going to have on
the community at large in years to come, and the answer is simple; a solid foundation and
sustainability.
