Activity 1: Write a report
(Marks available: 20)
Your local council has announced that they intend to build a Multi-Use Games Area
(MUGA) on some wasteland next to your street.
A MUGA is an outdoor fenced area for various types of games, such as football, basketball
or tennis. The fencing makes it easier to keep the ball in play.
You are the head of your street association. You attend a public meeting about the MUGA.
Write a report in which you give your own views about this proposal in detail to present to
the street association.
In your report you should:




use a suitable format
explain whether you are for or against the proposal and give your reasons why
explain what facilities you hope will be available for young people in your area in the
future
recommend how your association should respond to the proposal.
One document has been provided. The document contains useful content for the activity.
You may choose to select and use any of the material for your writing.
You may also use your own ideas to complete this activity.
Document 1
Notes taken at the public meeting.
Council is thinking about building a Multi-Use Games Area on the waste ground next to
Aiden Estate.
The community action group is raising money to help fund the MUGA.
Lots of views expressed at the meeting. Half in favour, half not.
Some views for the idea were:
•
young people need somewhere to go, there is too much traffic for them to play on
the road
• there have been plans for years, something needs to happen
• young people only play on the street as there is no-where else for them to go.
Some views against the idea were:
• it would cost a lot to maintain
• there is already a MUGA 10 miles away
• it may affect local people in terms of noise, light and extra traffic.
Residents asked to submit their views in writing and make other suggestions for facilities
for young people.

Dear Layton MUGA Group
I attended the council meeting last Tuesday when you explained what you were trying to do for
the residents in this area. I was very impressed with the turnout. I have not seen such a well
attended meeting for a long time. I was also very impressed with the hard work you have all put
into this project.
I think it very important that young people are at least given the opportunity of having a place to
go and something to do. I was not aware of how expensive the equipment could be. I would
therefore like you to accept the enclosed cheque towards some of the costs of this very
worthwhile project.
Please keep me informed of your progress, especially when you think you might have a possible
opening date!
Yours sincerely
John Bramley
