Week 4

Day 1 – Chunking the
Text
Today’s lesson is about making the
text more manageable for you.
When you open that test booklet
and you see a story that is 4 pages
long – it is hard to keep going. We
know!
This is what makes your reading
stamina so important! You have to
be able to work through those long
passages without giving up. Today
we are going to discuss a strategy
that can help make those longer
New Strategy: Chunk the
Text
When you chunk the text, you divide it
into smaller pieces and set stop and
think points. These points remind you
to stop and summarize what you have
already read before you continue to
read on.
The rule for chunking is count 5, draw a
line...
Every black line represents where you
chunk the text. This makes a 3 page
text much more manageable and easy
to follow.
At each line you stop and think "What did I just
read?" If you cannot answer this question, then
you should go back and reread!!
Where does the strategy “Chunk
the Text” fit in our reading steps?
1. Read the Title!
2. Figure out the genre and what you already know.
3. Read the questions, only the questions! Can you
figure out the question type? (Main idea,
content clues, character traits, etc...)
4. CHUNK the TEXT, read and underline.
5. Cover the choices and select the best answer.
Day 1 - Closure
Tomorrow, we will practice “Chunking the
Text” by reading Roberto and the Soccer
Game.

Day 2 – Chunking the Text
We are going to continue with the lesson we
started yesterday that discussed the strategy
of Chunking the Text.
The purpose of this strategy is to help make
longer texts more manageable. This is an
important strategy to remember on the EOG.
The rule for chunking is count 5, draw a
line...
Every black line represents where you
chunk the text. This makes a 3 page
text much more manageable and easy
to follow.
At each line you stop and think "What did I just
read?" If you cannot answer this question, then
you should go back and reread!!
Where does the strategy “Chunk
the Text” fit in our reading steps?
1. Read the Title!
2. Figure out the genre and what you already know.
3. Read the questions, only the questions! Can you
figure out the question type? (Main idea,
content clues, character traits, etc...)
4. CHUNK the TEXT, read and underline.
5. Cover the choices and select the best answer.
Watch me as I use this strategy...
"What did I just read?"
Watch me as I continue to read to the next stopping
point...
"What did I just read?"
How does that build on what I read
previously?
Independent Reading/Closure –
Day 2
Today as you independently read, you will
continue to work on your reading stamina.
What is stamina? The ability to do
something for an extended period of time.
On the test, you will be expected to have
reading stamina.
At the end of the reading block today, you
will be asked to reflect on your reading
stamina.

Day 3 – Chunking the Text
Cont.
We are going to continue our practice with
Chunking the Text today by reading “Roberto
and the Soccer Game”.
Teachers – pass out copies of “Roberto…” to
the students.
Before we begin reading…
Let’s practice our Chunking the Text
strategy.
We need to remember to count 5 and
draw a line – let’s draw our lines
together.
Before we begin reading, let’s stop and look at the
questions… WHOLE TEXT or DETAIL? Key Words?
With your partner, read each section
of the text. Stop at each line and
ask each other what you read?
After you finish the text, we will look
at the questions once again.
Day 3 - Closure
