Society’s Annual Report 2016/17 SURREY FILIPINO SOCIETY (SFS) Participation We currently have 25 members singed-up on the union website. From last years’ number of members this has increased. However, the fact that not everyone signed up on the union website, did not affect the membership and participation of individuals within the society. Other members who are not signed up on the union website and are active in the society, updates themselves through other forms of social media such as Facebook. Personal Development Meetings were held regularly to discuss to discuss future society events. This includes short-term and long term projects. There were 2 meet and greet events organized to give more opportunities for members who were not able to attend to the first one. Events were organized to meet the different interests of members such as organizing a Winter Ball for members who are interested in interacting with other societies while the sports day event allows competitive members to shine through sports. Also, to ensure that members’ voice is listened to, we conducted polls to give them the opportunity to vote for the next event. To develop the presence of the society, we’ve organized events that promotes collaboration with other societies such as the Winter Ball. Lastly, we joined I-gala for the first time this year, showcasing our culture and creative talents. Member Benefits - - - Allowed Filipinos and non-Filipinos to reconnect and learn more about the Filipino culture, through culture related events and culture related activities within the events. Helped fresher’s settle into university life and make friends, by creating events with them in mind in and giving them an opportunity to socialise with not only fellow first years but also members of the society from all years and from a variety of courses. Increased members experience, bond and skills through society performances, such as iGala. Many non dancers performed a 10-minute routine in front of more than 300 people, for the first time. Encouraged more society member participation by including members in choosing events. A poll was held on which event to hold next. Giving members opportunity to get involved in charity work, by holding events such as bake sales. Also, getting them involved in the baking process, and teaching the members simple skills in baking. Community Summary Surrey Filipino Society are once again participating in the shoebox appeal to give the less fortunate in the Philippines and is going to be personally sent by the president of the society. This project has been promoted since the start of 2016, to give awareness for the society members and non-members. We are planning to do this in the next academic year. Internally within the society, we have made great progress in maintaining and creating relationships with the new and existing members and we expect to radiate positive energy and enjoyment at events and meetings. Finance Summary Bank Statement ((as of 5/5/16) In the activation of this society from dormancy, the account started with £0. As of May 05,2016, the account is currently holding 247.44. It is expected to decrease next week for the reimbursement of the money used for buying costumes for the one-world gala and the snacks that will be given during the AGM on May 09, 2016. As seen on the spreadsheet, the transactions made this year should have £0.53 more in total than the bank statement. It is probably because at the beginning of the year, transactions such as reimbursement was made directly through cash after profit sales were made. Bank Summary as of 7/4/2017 However, this number is not wholly representative of the figure at handover. As an active society we are due to run events, even after the AGM, and as such some cash is still in use. We expect the sum of cash left to be no lower than £300. After taking over the finances of the society, we began with £160, and with careful events planning, as well as entrepreneurial use of the funds we do have, we were able to increase the Society’s funds significantly. Our focus diverted to other events therefore, we did not have enough time to do a lot of bake sale to raise money for the shoebox appeal. Nevertheless, to overcome this challenge we tried to mention and promote about the shoebox during our events and thus have managed to received a few filled shoeboxes donated by some of our members. Furthermore, collaborating with other Filipino societies from different universities for a sports day event was unsuccessful due to the SSP dates availability. Instead, we have decided to collaborate with other societies within the university as we really wanted a sports day for our society members and this a good way to engage as well as interacting with each other. Recommendations for 2017/18 - -Ensure that you have short-term and long term projects planned out that meets the different interests of members. Make a timeline of when you should start preparing for events to ensure that it actually happens. - -Collaborate with other societies. Try and expand outside Asian Societies. -Do more fundraising events to give back the poor communities in the Philippines. -Try and do the STAR criteria. 2016/17 Society positions Signatories: President.
