3 Walleye players get high honors
By winning all three games in the final
regular season week, the Walleye clinched
the Brabham Cup as the league’s top team.
That means the Walleye have home ice
advantage for all four rounds of the playoffs. Goaltender Jake Paterson turned aside
24 shots from the Fuel in the Cup clinching
win, his team record seventh shutout of the
season and the second most in ECHL history.
Paterson was also the goaltender (32
saves) when the Walleye won the Brabham
Cup in 2014-15 in an 8-2 victory over the
Kalamazoo Wings April 12, 2015. That was
the first professional start for Paterson. The
51st win on Saturday is also a new single
season record.
In the final home game, the attendance
of 8,020 marked the 20th sellout crowd of
the season for Walleye (a record). It also set
a new single-season record with 254,660
fans for the year. Toledo’s average of 7,074
per game is the first time that a Toledo team
has averaged over 7,000 fans per game in a
single season.
After scoring just seven goals over a
four game winless skid, Toledo found its
legs again over this past week scoring 19
goals over the three games. The highlight
was a season best 10-goal outburst in a
10-0 win over Indy in the home and season finale. Toledo finished the season with
a league best and new Walleye record 302
goals scored over the 72 games season.
This year’s Walleye has done something that no other team in ECHL history
(the league started play in 1988) by leading the league in goals for (4.19 per game)
with 302, goals allowed (2.65 per game)
with 191, overall power play percentage
(25.1 percent) and penalty kill percentage
(86.8 percent). Only Knoxville in 1990-91
and Louisiana in 2001-02 are the only other
teams in ECHL history to lead the league
in both goals for and against in the same
season.
Two Toledo players, Paterson and forward Shane Berschbach have been voted
2016-17 All-East Coast Hockey League second team selections.
Berschbach has set multiple Walleye
records this year including single season
marks for assists with 62 and points with
80. He ranks fifth among all ECHL players
this year in points and third in assists. The
third year forward from Clawson, Michigan
also set another Walleye record when in
March he collected a point in 11 straight
contests. Twenty-six of the 62 assists this
season have come on the power play which
is the most in Walleye history and ranks
second among all ECHL players this year.
“Shane is a playmaker in the truest
sense of the word,” said Watson. “It is no
surprise that he has performed at such a
high level because that is what he has done
for three straight years in Toledo.”
In total over three seasons, Berschbach
has skated in 194 Walleye games in which
he is the Walleye all-time leader in assists
(153) and he ranks second to teammate
Evan Rankin (212) in career points (210).
Berschbach is also the recipient of the
ECHL Sportsmanship Award for 2016-17
as determined in a vote of ECHL coaches,
broadcasters, media relations directors and
media members.
The award is presented annually to the
player who is judged to have exhibited the
best sportsmanship combined with a high
standard of playing ability. It is the second
consecutive year that Berschbach has won
the award and he is the first player to win it
in consecutive years since David Ling of the
Dayton Bombers won three straight from
1998-2001. It is the third time a Walleye
player has won this award as Randy Rowe
collected it in 2012-13.
The native of Clawson, Michigan was
named to the ECHL Second Team yesterday
and has become the first Walleye player to
reach 80 points, including 18 goals, with
just 25 penalty minutes. Over his Walleye
career, Berschbach has collected 57 goals
and 153 assists and a plus-38 with just 41
penalty minutes in 194 games.
Berschbach received the award last
year when had just six penalty minutes
with 67 points (24G, 43A) over 61 games
with a career best plus 14. The 25-yearold spent four years at Western Michigan
University prior to turning professional. As
a Bronco, Berschbach posted 39 goals and
78 assists and was a plus 27 in 146 games.
In 2012, he helped Western Michigan to a
CCHA Tournament Championship.
Like Berschbach, Paterson has reached
and set Walleye single season records this
year. His 32 wins leads the entire ECHL,
while his 2.34 goals against average is
third best in the league and his .917 save
percentage ranks fifth. The 22-year-old has
picked up six shutouts this year, a Toledo
ECHL record, which is tied for third most
in a single ECHL season. In 77 career games
for Toledo, Paterson has a record of 51-22-4
with a Walleye best eight shutouts.
“Jake has been a steady force all season
long,’ said Watson. “He has developed into
a tremendous goaltender through hard work
that has paid off in an amazing season.”
The 32 wins for Paterson equals the
most in a single season for the Walleye (Jeff
Lerg, 2014-15) while his 47 appearances
and 2,799 minutes are new single-season
highs in Walleye history. The Mississauga,
Ontario native had an 11 game unbeaten
streak in regulation (10-0-1) that lasted from
November 16 through December 30. During
that streak, he tied teammate Cal Heeter
with eight straight wins, a Walleye record.
Spink Rookie of the Year
Walleye player Tyson Spink finished
his first pro season with 74 points and has
been named CCM ECHL Rookie of the Year.
He is the recipient of the John A. Daley
Memorial Trophy as the player selected
most proficient in his first year of competition. He joins Tyler Barnes (2014-15) as the
only Walleye players to win the award.
Spink finished with an ECHL rookie
best 33 goals with 42 assists while performing as a plus 17 over 69 games played this
year. Last week he was named to the ECHL
All-Rookie team along with teammates
Nolan Zajac and Tylor Spink. Tyson led all
first year players with nine game-winning
goals this year.
“His effort to become a better player has
shown up in his everyday preparation, and
work effort on and off the ice. That work
has led him to a special season,”Watson
said.
