SAFETY CHALLENGES FACING REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS
Real Estate can be a very risky profession. Realtors frequently find themselves
alone, with strangers, who can find them simply by checking open houses or
making an appointment to meet in an empty home.
“There are often stories about Realtor safety and agencies always remind their
agents about the importance of being safe. Many agents will jump at an
opportunity to show a house and forget that a complete stranger has called
them to look.” says Evan Berman, Owner of the William Raveis Broder Group.
Unfortunately, many real estate agents have found themselves in dangerous
situations and haven’t been able to get help quickly enough. Beverly Carter, an
agent in Arkansas, was abducted and killed in 2014 when showing a home in
her small community. Sometimes, the story ends better – as in the case of
Janice Tisdale, who survived an attack from a client – but even in that case,
Janice had shown the client several homes and didn’t see the attack coming. If
a car full of teenagers hadn’t driven by at just the right moment, she may not
have been rescued.
When agents do bring personal protection, they often choose self-defense
weapons that can be difficult to use, or be used against them by assailants.
The most common weapons carried are pepper spray, a firearm, or a taser,
and most agents don’t carry anything at all. Instead, they notify a family
member or office manager of where they will be-- but that person is helpless
to react in real time.
WHY WILLIAM RAVEIS BRODER GROUP CHOSE WEARSAFE
“Wearsafe is best used when hosting an open house or when out showing
homes,” said Berman. “It certainly gives our agents an extra layer of
security.” When an agent sends a Wearsafe alert, their network can hear
what’s happening, see where they are, and quickly coordinate to send the
right help, right away.

For real estate professionals, the ability to use Wearsafe when a situation has
become uncomfortable (but not yet dangerous) could also be a lifesaver. Most
people will wait to call emergency responders until after a situation has
escalated, but the Wearsafe Safety Service allows agents to discreetly call for
help at the first signs of trouble, avoiding potentially harmful results altogether.
With the ability to leverage Wearsafe’s streaming audio to understand the
context of a situation, alerted colleagues or friends can decide if they can
personally assist, or if they should call emergency responders. Sometimes
agents need emergency services, and sometimes a more nuanced response is
better suited in a work environment. Wearsafe allows for both.
This audio component, unique to Wearsafe, is also powerful evidence in the
often muddied waters of litigation after a situation has been resolved.
“An audio recording from the actual incident, in real time, is incredibly
powerful evidence in a criminal or civil case.” concluded Attorney N. Kane
Bennett, a former Massachusetts prosecutor and current litigator. Many
times, there is no evidence of what is said at a scene. In other cases, it is one
person’s word against another. Wearsafe first provides the often missing
critical evidence of statements at the scene, and then eliminates any
arguments about who is telling the truth.
Wearsafe is a safety service that can help with emergencies large and small.
