Hope in one’s history
Hope in the present
Hope in the future
Hope in the counseling
process
• Hope emerges from an empathic, genuine, and supportive
presence
• recognizing glimmers of hope that highlight current
resiliency; recognizing adaptive ways of managing
symptoms and problems
• current development of presenting problems; current
resources and strengths available but possibly minimized
• establishing meaningful treatment goals, restoring a hopeful
outlook on the future, presenting evidence-based tools that
foster hope—this has been tackled before
• reminding them they remain present in the fight, revising
skills and concepts that target new problems, reviewing
progress on goals, ending interactions with hope
