Identify and highlight prices, sub-totals, taxes, totals and dates on sales receipts.

The reader can:
 recognize numbers, a small number of words (subtotal, tax, total) and very short simple phrases related
to immediate needs (store name, some item names, and the date)
The receipts are:


clear, sparse and very easy to read
very short
Learner’s strengths & limitations:




finds a few key words and simple details (the date, the words subtotal, tax, total, and the amounts)
has little ability to apply sound-symbol relationships
has almost no ability to decode unknown words
relies heavily on graphics and other visual clues (layout of receipt)
Holistic Criteria for Assessment:
Learners can scan short simple
receipts for subtotal, tax amounts,
and totals
Analytic Criteria for Assessment:




Read out loud the words Subtotal, Tax, Total in different forms: all
upper case, mixed upper & lower case, all lower case
Read dates in different forms: all numerals, mixed abbreviated
months and numerals
Scan some receipts and highlight only the date, the words subtotal,
tax, and total as well as their amounts.
Learner listens to the teacher ask: What’s the date /subtotal /tax
/total?. The learner scans some receipts and points to the correct
places on the receipts.

What are receipts and why do we need them?
Recognize receipts compared to other small documents such as product instructions, large product tags,
warranties, small forms, etc.
What is tax and why is it collected?

Grammatical knowledge:
 Vocabulary: Subtotal, Tax, Total
 recognize the date in different forms: all numerals, mixed abbreviated months and numerals

Functional knowledge: General format of a receipt:





Store name at the top
Date at the top or the bottom
Subtotal is after the list of items bought
Tax is after subtotal
Total is after subtotal and tax


A receipt is a formal document necessary for proof of purchase and returns.
