Committee meetings are held regularly throughout the year and all communication regarding netball at Christchurch Girls’ High School is done via the Administrator or a Club Committee member - not through school. The Club has six life members, Val Greenslade, Pat Sykes, Philippa Lemon. Chris Rodda, Jane Small and Robin Brown. 1. CLUB COMMITTEE A committee of up to 10 persons plus a Chairperson, Treasurer, Staff Representative and Player Representative/s is elected annually at the AGM which in 2017 was held on 20th February 20167 and was advertised at School, Christchurch Netball Centre, and through our email and Facebook base. The Club has the services of an Administrator who is responsible for all administrative enquiries and supports the volunteer committee at meetings and other events. The Committee is identifiable on Saturday at the Christchurch Netball Centre in navy blue jackets with CGHS Netball Committee printed on them - these are the people who willingly organise netball for your daughter each year and are happy to answer any questions you might have, and listen to any suggestions you may have. 2. CLUB NEWSLETTERS Newsletters which include arrangements made for social activities, dates of interest, coaching seminars and sessions etc, will be uploaded onto the front page (right side) on the School’s website: www.chgirls.school.nz, on the Club’s website www.sporty.co.nz/cghsnetball, and Facebook. The CGHS Netball Club website is your first ‘port of call’ for club netball information. 3. REGISTRATION All players must register online at www.sporty.co.nz/cghsnetball and pay registration in full $200.00, before they can trial. Failure to register and pay before your trial date means no trial. Lists of registered players will be available at all trials and will be used as ‘check lists’ for this purpose. REGISTER NOW. 4. UNIFORMS The Club’s playing uniform is: Lenco navy pull-up skirt. All players apart from the Senior A team will be required to purchase a navy pull-up skirt at a cost of $45.00. Players are required to purchase their own red/white/blue netball team top at a cost of $65.00 (some are available second hand). Both skirts and tops are available for purchase on Registration Day. Players are also required to wear plain white sports socks, navy spandex, netball shoes (no school shoes), and may on cold days wear NAVY polyprop under their netball tops. In addition, hear must be tied back. Sweatshirts, jerseys, tights or boxer shorts are NOT permitted to be worn while playing. CGHS netball players are required to purchase the School’s official sports tracksuit. Teams are NOT permitted to arrange individual team sponsorship without approval of the Committee and are NOT permitted to purchase additional team uniforms without approval of the Committee. UNIFORM DAY – If you need to purchase a uniform, they will be available to buy/order on Tuesday 7th March 2017 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm at Christchurch Girls’ High School in L2. New and used uniforms will be available. EFTPOS facilities will be available. 1 5. COMMITMENT OF PLAYERS Players named in club teams will also play in the same teams on the Wednesday Secondary Schools competition. No exceptions are permitted – this is to ensure continuity within each team and ease of team organisation. Wednesday competition is supervised via the Sports Department at School (Mrs Robin Brown), who will also arrange transport for those teams requiring this to venues, each week. Boarders – ‘going home for the weekend’ is not a valid excuse for non-availability for a Saturday game – players have made a commitment to a netball team and it is up to each player to honor that commitment. School Balls and other social functions are also not considered a valid excuse for non-availability for a Saturday competition game. Hairdressing and other associated appointments need to be made around scheduled games. The CNC Draw is available on the website www.christchurchnetball.org.nz in five weekly blocks which allows ample time for appointments to be made around advertised game time. Players are therefore required to be available for Wednesday and Saturday competition, and for all training sessions and other games as advised. Parents/caregivers are required to ensure their daughter/s abide by this requirement. Default fees and non-attendance at allocated umpiring duty is the responsibility of the team and/or individual concerned. These fines range from $60 - $500 and will NOT be paid by the Club. It is important that the correct game, time, court number is known each week and that teams arrive in plenty of time at the court for their game and/or their umpiring duties. 6. COACHING CAMPS/CLINICS AND SPECIALIST SESSIONS Coaching sessions are held for players at various levels. These are usually broken down into sessions for Year 10 – defense players; Year 10 - mid court; Year 10 - attacking players, and the same for the Year 9 age group. These are held in the school gymnasium/netball courts during the second term and are advertised in the netball newsletter and also on the Netball noticeboard in the gymnasium. For these sessions the Club invites senior club coaches, Centre coaches or high profile players to conduct the sessions with input from our own club coaches. There is no extra cost to players just another opportunity for players who wish to gain more knowledge of their specialist area from a coach other than their own team coach. 2 7. DRAWS FOR GAMES The Draw for Wednesday competition is posted on the website of Canterbury School Sport the Monday prior to each round of games and can be found on www.canterbury.schoolsport.org.nz It is also posted on the Gymnasium notice-board on Monday of each week for games to be played that week. The Draw for Saturday competition at Christchurch Netball Centre is available on the Christchurch Netball Centre website http://www.netballchristchurch.org.nz - along with a lot of other useful netball information and policies. This will also be posted on the Gymnasium noticeboard each week. Cancellation – please listen to More FM or Newstalk ZB for cancellation information OR phone the CNC cancellation line 379 4489 option 4 or check website www.netballchristchurch.org.nz . Under 19 and above grades will always play unless a Competitions Committee decision is made to defer games. 10. ELITE PLAYERS It is important that elite players at all levels are recognised and rewarded for their talents and at CGHS we have had some very special players who have been identified as players with potential. These players form only a small part of the club and parents should be aware that ALL players are important to the club, to the teams, to the coaches and to their families. Obviously it is difficult to recognise these people continually, however it is felt that by recognising the elite players, other players have role models and people to identify within their own club or school. It is often the recognition of these elite players and successes of teams which ‘fly the flag’ for the Club and enhance its reputation locally and nationally. 11. NETBALL NOTICES It is important that players regularly check the Netball Section of the gymnasium noticeboard where all notices regarding practise times or any changes, team meetings etc are posted. Coaches/managers may not always be able to phone or contact players individually at short notice – players are encouraged to check the noticeboard daily during the netball season. 4 13. PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES We are fortunate that Christchurch Netball Centre has a strong link through sponsorship of our Senior A team with Performance Physio. If requiring physiotherapy needs, we would encourage you to work with Performance Physio. They can be contacted on 03 352 0395. 14. SIDELINE SUPPORT As a Club we work hard to build a rapport with parents and families of players and ask that they in turn support players and team from the sideline with positive comments. It is important that the supporters know each other, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to other CGHS team supporters - another way of extending your friendships within Christchurch Girls’ High School, and your daughter. The other support we do actively encourage is for CGHS netball players to stop and support other teams within their club who may be playing on Saturday and Wednesday - don’t walk by the court, stop for a moment and lend some positive vocal support to the team. 15. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES It is intended that some activities such as Movie Nights, Quiz Nights etc may continue to be held with attendance purely on a voluntary basis and any funds generated will of course form part of general club funds. These have proven very successful in the past and something parents have requested remain on the calendar. 16. SUBSCRIPTIONS Netball Club subscriptions are set annually and for 2017 have been set at $200.00 per player. Families with two or more players receive a $20.00 reduction per player. Payment is due on the 7th March 2017. Senior A and Year 9A and 10A players attend a South Island Secondary School Tournament. In addition to the registration fee, there is a tournament fee, which covers the cost of accommodation, food, transport etc. If your daughter makes the Senior A team you will be invoiced approximately $450.00. The Year 9A and 10A tournament is held in Christchurch. The approximate cost to take part in this tournament is around $300.00. To assist families, the invoices will be sent out early in the season. Most years, 2 girls will be brought up from a lower team to help develop their netball. Once the girls are selected, an invoice will be sent home to cover the tournament fee. Direct payments may be made to the CGHS Netball Club Inc account at Westpac 03 0823 0667308 00. Any payments made this way must have full name of player(s) for reference. Pay by cash, cheque or EFTPOS on registration night. Subscriptions may be paid by installments if arrangements are made with the Administrator or Treasurer before the end of Term 1. Please note subscriptions cannot be paid through your child’s account at School - the club is run totally independently and separate from the school. Please do not send netball club subscriptions to school or post via the RED DESK. 5 How is the $200.00 subscription spent? Approx $110.00 per player is paid direct to Christchurch Netball Centre which then distributes a portion of that to Mainland Netball who in turn pay a proportion to Netball New Zealand. Your fees also support the use of facilities at CNC, Draws production, and games and umpires are supplied at a cost of less than $4.50 per game per player per season. Approx $15.00 per player per year is spent on updating club equipment including netballs, first aid equipment, cones, bibs, bags etc. Approx $45.00 per player per year is spent on updating and accreditation courses for coaches, attendance at courses/ seminars and reimbursing them with a minimal amount towards cost for their attendance at trainings, games and for subsidizing selected players to attend courses, seminars and training camps and a nominal contribution to Year 9 and 10 teams to attend SISS Junior Netball Development tournament. Approx $30.00 per player is spent on administration of the club including faxes, toll calls, club presentations, prizegiving, storage of equipment and other budgeted costs. Christchurch Netball Centre 2017 team subscriptions are: Premier – 2nd Grade Under 19 3rd Grade Under 17 – Under 15 Under 14 – Under 13 $965.00 $810.00 $755.00 $745.00 $665.00 A Netball New Zealand per team levy of $60.00 for senior teams and $35.00 for all other teams has been imposed for 2017. 17. TEAM COACHES As with all sports it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain volunteers, especially in the field of coaching and management of teams. While every endeavour is made to find competent, enthusiastic and qualified coaches we are increasingly aware that this is not always possible. The Club has a policy in place that all coaches of club teams must be accredited to at least the NNZ ‘Starting Out in Coaching’ level and coaches are encouraged to upgrade their accreditation where appropriate. Coaching accreditation and attendance at these courses is paid for by the Club in an attempt to assist these people to up skill and become competent coaches at secondary school level. When senior students offer to coach teams (and they do offer!) we encourage them to coach in a job-share arrangement so that they may play their own games and attend their own team practises without causing disruption to the team they are coaching. Where possible job-share coaching roles are organised so that these senior student coaches are not playing in the same team, however we do acknowledge that this arrangement is not always possible. You are asked to be tolerant at times when your daughter’s team coach is involved playing her own game – organisation for this to not occur is not always possible due to Draw difficulties and limitations. Team Coaches are supplied with resources to assist them with coaching; they are given a Coaching Folder with all Club information included and are supported and assisted throughout the year - it is important that parents recognise the time and effort student coaches put into their sport and acknowledge this by being positive and supportive at all times. The Club also recruits qualified coaches from other areas such as University of Canterbury Physical Education and Bachelor of Sport Coaching students, NZIS, ex-students and senior club players in an effort to ensure teams are well coached at all times. Please remember it is the coach(es) decision as to which team member/s take the court, in which position they 6 play, and how much game time each player gets - as parents you MUST respect this at all times. The Club Committee strongly supports coaches and their decision making in the best interests of the team, and will not in any circumstances direct a coach to play certain players or a team in a certain way. If you have concerns, please discuss first with the coach and/or team manager before arranging a meeting with a Club Committee member. 18. TEAM MANAGERS All teams are allocated a team manager – often (but not always) a parent/caregiver of a player in that particular team. Coaches are asked to work with parents in appointing a Manager. Team Managers are briefed on their role in the team and are supplied with guidelines and handy hints to assist them to carry out this role in an efficient and helpful manner. Any concerns regarding players, training sessions, games etc should in the first instance be directed to the Team Manager, who after consultation with the Coach will forward any issue to the Club Committee if required. 19. TEAM SELECTION POLICY AND PROCEDURE Objectives: i. To select the best team of netball players in each age group/grade to represent CGHS at Christchurch Netball Centre, Secondary School competition and whatever other competitions/ tournaments or school fixtures which may be scheduled ii. To play high quality skilful netball consistently iii. To be successful at all levels of participation Selection Policy: i. The selection panel for each grade/age group/form shall consist of the Coach appointed to the senior team in that grade/age group plus other team coaches for teams in that grade (if appointments are confirmed at that time) and any other personnel appointed by the CGHS Club committee to assist in this role. ii. All players/school pupils will be assigned to a team. iii. All teams shall have a minimum of 9 registered players for the season (Year 13 self selected & all social teams must have no less than 10 players registered for the season). iv. All team coaches shall have the right to co-opt players into the team during the season as required and as governed by Christchurch Netball Centre rules and CGHS Netball Club Inc. Constitution. v. All players must be available for CNC fixtures, Wednesday Secondary School competition, School exchange fixtures and any other tournaments as may be agreed upon and advised (if arrangements known and confirmed) as soon as teams are confirmed. vi. All players required to umpire and/or coach must confirm their commitment or otherwise are ineligible for selection. (Umpires are required weekly from teams Under 17 and above). vii. Players who are selected in the Senior A team will not be able to be available for other winter sports codes in A teams – due to clash of trainings, fixtures and commitments such as SISS tournament (Winter Sports Week). Please make yourself aware of this requirement. There is also a very high risk of ‘over training’ at these levels, hence we are trying to protect the players so they can balance other aspects of their lives – social, school, family. Selection Procedure: i. Pre-season meeting will be held for all intending netballers at school no later than 1 month prior to commencement of netball team trials. ii. Trials dates will be advertised via school sports noticeboard and club website. iii. Trials will continue to be held until teams are announced and players confirmed. iv. Teams are announced by way of noticeboard only - not announced verbally in front of players. 7 v. Ex-pupils or adult players will be invited to attend trials on dates set and number of teams will be determined by numbers of players indicating positive interest to participate. Desired Competencies & personal qualities in Team Selection: i. Quality of technical skill and consistency of performance required for level of competition. ii. Players who have tactical understanding of game. iii. Players who incorporate flair and skill in their game. iv. Players who are committed to achieving and maintaining fitness, who have completed injury rehabilitation required for level of competition - unless strictly termed “social” team. v. Players who can sustain consistency in performance throughout game. vi. Players who have skills and capabilities to level required. vii. Players who can show total commitment to their team. viii. Players who show strong work ethics and show a total team commitment. viii. Players who show discipline on and off court. ix. Players who demonstrate team qualities on and off court and who show a readiness to listen, learn and apply learning. x. Players who show versatility, consistency and adaptability. Teams can only be selected fairly and equitably if all intending players attend all trials - if players do not attend all trials as required, it may be they are overlooked or required to play a position not indicated by them when registering to trial. In some instances a large majority of players indicate a special position they wish to trial for - it may be that over 65% of other trialists have also indicated that same area of court - somewhat difficult to compose teams of even nature when this happens which is why some players are selected in a team and may commence playing in a different position than they prefer - there are always many anomalies and problems when it comes to selecting teams. Trials are a very difficult task to complete in a given timeframe and we cannot guarantee all players are selected in the team/grade they are seeking, however all selectors and coaches do their very best to ensure all players are trialed equally and fairly. Players are reminded that if they were in a year A team in any year this does not give them automatic right into a Year A team the following year. Every player is selected on merit at the time of trials. Players are also reminded that if they are selected for the Senior A team over a Year group team they do not have the right to make the final decision as to which team they wish to play in – this situation must be discussed with the A team selectors at trials. 20. TEAMS Notification of selection is made on our website www.sporty.co.nz/cghsnetball. Players listed have 24 hours to change their mind or withdraw from a team which must be done via email to [email protected] – any withdrawal from a team must not be done via a message through other players.. Within the 24 hour period, the player will receive their subscription less the trial fee of $50.00. At the expiration of the 24 hour period, teams are FINAL and any changes made will be done via the Administrator only. Forfeiture of subscriptions will be imposed at this point, on any withdrawal other than long-term injury or move out of Christchurch (refer to Constitution). In 2017 there will be an opportunity for ‘self-selected’ teams for students in Year 13 only who do not wish to trial for Senior teams in the trials process. 21. TRAVEL/TOURNAMENTS In 2017 the Year 9A and Year 10A teams will participate in the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Development Tournament being held in Christchurch first week of July school holidays and the teams with coaches and managers will be resident in a motel/hostel during this tournament. If your daughter is selected in either of these teams she 8 must be available to attend this tournament – please do not make holiday arrangements that preclude this requirement. The Senior A team will participate in the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament during the first week of September, in Christchurch. Fundraising will also be required to pay for costs for the tournaments and players will also be expected to make an additional monetary contribution towards costs to be part of this team. 22. UMPIRES Apart from the usual team umpiring commitment required each Wednesday and Saturday, the Club is also required to supply several club umpires each season. Ideally these are players who show an interest in becoming involved in umpiring in the future. Teams in CNC Under 14 grades are required to supply their own umpire for the entire time of their game. Umpires cannot change during the game. Should a team not supply their own umpire, one player will be removed from the court for the entire game. The umpires are also utilised for other competition games on Saturdays, if they wish to take up umpiring. There are also many opportunities to officiate at training games, Wednesday games and are given many opportunities for further training and extension through the Club and also through Netball Umpires Christchurch. Any player wishing to extend her umpiring knowledge is asked to advise Umpire Liaison committee member (Mrs Brown or Jan Colvin). 9 23.
