News, Page 5A Dec. 14, 2010 Former UW-Stout hockey players plead not guilty in student’s death By Pamela Powers Menomonie News Bureau MENOMONIE — Two former members of the UW-Stout men's hockey program pleaded not guilty Monday to causing the death of a fellow student. Jared C. Britton, 23, and Jedidiah R. McGlasson, 21, each is charged with felony counts of murder and battery, both as party to the crime, in the death of Bradley L. Simon, 22, of Waunakee, who was a construction major at the university. Britton and McGlasson pleaded not guilty to both counts. They are scheduled to return to court Feb. 18. During Monday's Dunn County Court hearing, McGlasson's lawyer, Eric Newmark, asked Judge Rod Smeltzer to modify bond so McGlasson could return to Alaska to work as an apprentice electrician and live with his family. Bond requires that McGlasson stay within Wisconsin, although he may travel to the Twin Cities. Newmark noted McGlasson came to Menomonie to attend UW-Stout just one week before Simon's death and has no family or friends in Menomonie. District Attorney James Peterson opposed the bond change. "Alaska is a very long way from here," he said. "That's a long way for us to go look for someone if they don't show up (for court)." Smeltzer did not modify terms of McGlasson's bond. Simon died Sept. 23 after authorities say he was shoved off a bicycle in downtown Menomonie on Sept. 18 and struck a concrete wall after a disagreement in the Log Jam tavern with Britton. Reprinted with permission. During a preliminary hearing, it remained unclear whether Britton or McGlasson pushed Simon as he rode a bicycle to get away from them and other UW-Stout hockey players waiting for him outside the Log Jam tavern. Britton told authorities that McGlasson pushed the bicycle Simon was riding. However, one of the bouncers working at the Log Jam Sept. 18 said he saw Britton shove the bike, causing Simon to veer into a retaining wall, fly over the handle bars and collide with the wall face-first. Police have said the incident occurred after Simon disagreed with Britton about Britton not wearing a shirt under his sweatshirt while at the Log Jam. Britton had played hockey for UW-Stout and McGlasson was a recruit for this season. Both have been kicked off the team. Both Britton and McGlasson are out of custody on $10,000 bonds.
