Transition Courses overview course plan Name of School Day 1 Day 1 Plan of activities This plan of activities is designed to help you to launch your Transitional Course in the best way possible. It is very important to get day 1 perfect so you can capture the imagination of the learners and get them enthused to turn up for everyday of the course. The first impression you give them at the very start of day 1 has to be perfect. Any less than this is not PET-XI and should never ever happen. There is a huge list of different activities that you can do with the learners. You will be given the list of things that you can do + the list of activities that you HAVE to do as they are prebooked. Any activities that aren’t pre-booked can be done depending on your learners and the materials you have been given, try and follow the recommended plan though as this will make your life much easier! Male sure you read through this before the course starts as it will be useful to do and talk about the recommendations before the learners arrive, everything needs to look as slick as possible. Be prepared that you and your team may need a change of shoes for some activities to allow you to join in. When you split your learners into two teams, make sure they have staff assigned to each group. The member of staff will be part of the team and won’t change. Do not assign yourself a group as you will need to be floating around. Also leave a mascot free who can set up the rooms and the next activities as they come up. Below is a breakdown of the bullet points to follow with some guidelines and ideas to make everything as Golden as possible. 1. Greeting every learner into the classroom everyday is very important. They should be made to feel really welcome immediately. You will have a lot of nervous learners, a lot of low ability learners and probably a number that are expecting it to be rubbish. This is their first contact with the school and therefore the school will be watching like a hawk on day 1, so get it right. a. RECOMMENDATIONS – Get the team to meet the learners at the front door and guide them to the right place. Keep them occupied and happy while waiting for everyone to turn up. It would be worth having someone in your team finding out things about the learners as they arrive in terms of things they like to do, favourite foods we can buy in and activities they are really 1 interested in. Do not leave any learners alone and make sure your team are not standing around while there are learners around, they must be engaging! 2. At the introduction, get all of the learners sat down and do a short introduction, don’t go into a big long ramble, just introduce yourself and the team and make sure everyone is happy. Tell them you can’t wait to work with them, tell them you are excited, and tell them it is going to be the most amazing thing ever! Before the end of this split them into 2 groups for the Theme Park they are going to work in through the course. They will need to be in smaller groups for the sessions, but only have two groups for Theme Park. a. RECOMMENDATIONS – make sure that you don’t have more groups than you have staff for the sessions. You should be able to split them into 4 groups comfortably. Remember you need a spare person to be the Games Master. This way when you are doing activities which include leaving the classroom a member of staff will stay with them at all times. Include the member of staff as part of the team and have a staff competition as well. Try not to include yourself as part of a team as you will have a lot of organising to do. 3. Play a game for 20 minutes – Relay Bucket Game (see sheet for explanation), make sure each and every learner wins a prize. This will get them interested in the day immediately and should have a bit of fun as well. Keep them whipped up and excited throughout the game. Run it as many times as you like but make sure it takes 20 minutes a. RECOMMENDATIONS – This sounds very simple and obvious but make sure it is all set up and ready to go before the learners arrive. Use the hall or outside if the weather is ok. Also make sure that the staff member assigned to that team is taking part fully with as much enthusiasm as they can manage! b. Make sure that every learner wins a prize – give them out while the game is still going; get energetic yourself and this will keep the pace up! 4. Once the learners are back in the classroom, sit them down and explain to them how the Theme Park part of the course works. Use the Theme Park Crib sheet to help you as this explains the task. Make sure you sound really positive about it and tell them about the National Competition which will be going on for the best Theme Park. 5. Building Kites Challenge – This is your first activity in which the learners will be doing something with their hands and will give you the chance to go and talk to them while it is going on. You will be told what to do and you MUST do exactly what it tells you to do as there maybe something similar to compare it to later on during the course.. Make sure your staff take part and make sure that they are communicating and getting involved with the learners at all times. 2 6. Next the learners will start to plan out their Pizza Day. They can look at the menus and decide exactly what they want to have and how much it will cost. You are allowed a limit of £100 for each cohort of up to 24 learners. Any learners that don’t or can’t eat Pizza must be allowed to get something else, if this costs more money, do it, just let Dave know as soon as you can. The learners should put their own order together ready to be called in at the appropriate time and decide on what day of the course they would like to do it. a. RECOMMENDATIONS – Again, get this organised first things so there is no dead time at all as you transition from one part to the next. You will have menus for them to look through and they will need paper to write down the orders on. Once again make sure the member of staff responsible with the team is helping out. There is 30 minutes set aside for this activity but it may not take that long. If this is the case just extend the next couple of parts to catch the time back. b. Have a look at the big shops deals, ie Pizza Hut do a two for one on a Tuesday for example. 7. Now start the Theme Park plan and complete as much as you can on the Theme Park Crib Sheet in the time you have. You should look at the getting the names done and the base part started at least within the first hour. 8. Finish off the day with the Photo Scavenger Hunt. This should be set up earlier in the day. Follow the crib sheet explaining how to do everything. Run it as fast as you can and keep the pace going, plenty of prizes and positive reinforcement before they get sent home and go back to talk to their parents! 3 Day 2 Day 2 will see the introduction of maths and english and needs to be promoted correctly after the fun of yesterday so keep it all upbeat!. Today will mostly be about the english testing to assess the levels of where they are and for the guarantee. It will need to be well lead and full of fun praise and prizes to keep the learners motivated. They must not get bored.
