Mens Club Captain Report - AGM 2014
After a turbulent 2012/2013 season which culminated in the Men’s 1st and 2nd teams both
being relegated, the start of the new season brought fresh hope and optimism, a brand new
pitch and some new faces (and some old!!!!).
The Men’s 1st team having been relegated found themselves in the Central division 1, this
meant travelling to new destinations and facing some different opposition, bringing a
welcome change. They started the season on fire winning their first seven games and a
serious promotion challenge was mounted. The side was extremely settled in comparison to
the previous season and this showed on the pitch with promotion still in their hands with 2
games to go, unfortunately a couple of results went the other way and promotion was missed,
however it may not be such a bad thing as this season provided a good platform to build on
for next season.
The Men’s 2nd team started the season alongside the Men’s 3rd team in South East division 1.
Much like the 1st team the 2nd team were serious promotion challengers for the entire season,
only coming up short right at the end of the season. Goals were a plenty for the 2nd team this
season as they boasted the clubs overall top scorer amongst others. Highlights of the season
must be the fiercely contested derby games against the 3rd team. On a whole it was a good
season for the team and to get a bit of stability in the side, however I believe next season the
goal should be promotion.
The Men’s 3rd team started the season with a great mix of youth and experience in their ranks
and on their day a match for anyone in the league. After a bit of a shaky start to the campaign
the results started to pick up in November and a number of straight wins really boosted the
confidence in the side. This is evident as both junior and senior most improved players were
from this team. In the end an 8th place finish was achieved, and this was a good solid season
considering a number of junior players had played a good number of games. There are a
number of players who will be making the jump to the 2nd team in the coming season which
is great news.

The Men’s 4th team started the season in South East division 3, once again under the guidance
of a number of trusted senior players and these players were instrumental in helping integrate
a number of junior players into playing senior hockey for the first time. Much like the rest of
the sides the team was largely settled, this showed on the pitch as the team ended the season
in 5th place and 11 points clear of 6th. Much like the 3rd team there will be players likely to
move up through the sides and it is now we see the benefit of our great junior section as there
will be more to come through.
From a training point of view, the season started as always with a large number of men
training on a regular basis, after Christmas the numbers dropped off slightly but not like in
previous seasons and this was encouraging. Most weeks, if not all we had good structured
sessions and my thanks must go to the coaches; Debs, Keith, Adam, Rich and Tim for always
sorting something out.
From a personal point of view it has been an encouraging season with results; however I feel
that as club captain we can learn a bit from the ladies section with regards to captains
meetings and team selections, with intentions of increasing player movement through the
teams and involvement of the younger players. As I said before, luckily all the sides have
been fairly settled and this makes things a lot easier, but moving forward I feel that if we are
to continue to thrive and progress then we could possibly benefit from meeting on a more
regular basis, much like the ladies section.
All in all it has been a very solid season for the men’s section and I must thank the captains;
Adam, Mark, Rich and Kern for all their hard work and ongoing commitment in making sure
we field teams every week.
