IN THE DITCH REMEMBER THIS NEWS SHEET IS A CLUB EFFORT. WITHOUT MEMBER INPUT IT WILL NOT EXIST FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMANS REPORT I begin this Report with some sadness. A good friend of ours from our early days at the club has passed away. Bob Squire, a Past President, and BDBA Delegate and widely remembered as a top Coach. Bob had not been well for some time and my thoughts are with Bob’s wife Jean and their son and daughter and families. I know he would make an excellent lead for his Skip, God. Also our thoughts are also with Cheryl LaCerf, our Ladies Vice President on the passing of her Dad. On another not so sad note – I have been informed that this edition of “In the Ditch” will be the last by our Editor Ray Paterson. Ray has put a lot time and effort in producing this fine newsletter for some time. For those of you who may not recall, I was the Editor of our newsletter before and during the building of our greens and clubhouse – Yes I was lucky, I didn’t have to look far for a scoop, there was always something doing, someone hitting the wrong nail, the pool was endless. Mind you there were pages lost, red penned or re-written, whereby hundreds of trees ended up in the waste paper bin, resulting in a simple 2 page newsletter. Those days, delivery was by hand to our members. So Ray, as you begin your well-deserved break, Thanks for what you have done, well done. Our next newsletter Editor will have some big shoes to fill. But knowing the person you are, you will be there to offer a helping hand when needed. On a lighter note, did you all see the new Lights on our Greens? Thanks to our Grants Committee, our past Secretary and not forgetting Gerry Jnr. We can see the difference. The best things we can give these people are for us to play a night game of bowls. Talking about Greens, get your names down early for a game of bowls as No 2 Green will be out from Tuesday 17th November till sometime in January 2016. Soon the ‘old slide in letters’ Sign next to the Carlton Sign on Samford Road, will be removed. On our permit application with the BCC, it was revealed that this sign was on Main Roads property, so we had to change our plans – that’s why our new LED Sign is mounted on the Left hand side of the post and not the right hand side. Before you say the sign is ‘only one sided’, only trees will see the sign for the other way. Keep an eye on this sign, there will be different messages every 8-10 seconds and can vary from day to day. We have re-introduced a new incentive (come again) whereby if you bring a new member to the club (with full membership) you will receive half your club membership back. We need new full members. You may have seen the posters around the club for a new type of a game of bowls called Jack Attack. This concept of a game of bowls is designed for those people who are ‘time poor’. Who hasn’t heard this from our kids, young families? Jack Attack is for non-bowlers and is played over an hour to seventy minutes (unlike our all afternoon games) and the bowls are supplied. You may ask why am I telling you full bowlers this. As a bowler, I am asking you to support this event to get a team together and give them a hint or two, introduce them to the game. Why not sponsor a team or even get a Ferny Grove Bowls, Sports and Community Club October 2015 Edition sponsor for them. Ok they are non-bowlers; one never knows how many champions start their chosen sport this way. Get a team together and let Jnr Lindsay know and if we get enough support we could offer some good prizes. At the District’s Presidents at Home day (Men’s and Ladies) played at New Farm, I felt very proud to belong to Ferny Grove, when not only the President but also the Chairman announced the clean sweep by our Men’s bowling division in Pennants. Also equally fine efforts done by our Ladies. To all our Pennant players, well done, you have done us proud. Also I would like to make a special congratulation to Sue Bond. Sue represented the state of Queensland in the ‘Over somethings’ competition in Tasmania and brought home the bacon and the apples. In all, 2015 has been very good for our bowls and if we keep supporting our Club it will be a successful year for it too. Ok I’ll stop now. Good bowling and good luck in the State pennant finals. Why not? The “B” Singles has been won by Maureen Napier. Consistency Finals was won by Patsy Saunders. ************************************* TREASURERS REPORT Hi again everyone Finished the month of October with a Net Profit of $15,547.47 and our year to date Net Profit is $162,228.51. The outstanding ATO debt has now been cleared. After reducing the club's Liabilities and paying for improved Fixed Assets (Greens lighting $23,490 and Digital Street Sign $7000) we are left with a Net Cash Position of $56,950 (approx.). We have to ensure we are in a position to handle any unexpected costs. So we are maintaining the management plan of the previous Board, and by acting frugally we will be in a good position for the future. It is the members of the Club, and more specifically the many volunteers who give their time, that are keeping the Club in an improving position. Regards Ken Strickland (Treasurer) Ferny Grove team of S. Bond, R. Imberger, P. Saunders and J. Collingwood were victorious in the District Senior 4’s competition. Sue Bond was also a member of the State Senior’s over 60 Fours that played in Launceston in Tasmania recently and they won. Well done Qld and Sue. Great honour. The Pink Day held on 20th Oct was very successful and $250 was donated to Cancer. Thank you ladies for your efforts. Melbourne Cup day was a huge success and was enjoyed by all – food was great. Thanks to Paul and Maryanne. Bev Brunton is recovering well from a major kidney operation, also Jacki Hansen and Helen McConnel are improving and we look forward to seeing them back on the Green in the New Year. Anyone else not feeling on top of things, we wish you well. Good bowling all and we wind down for the festive season. She claims that the man’s knowledge of the subject is beyond belief. Jan’s family home shows a wonderful display of her talent. ************************************** Ferny Grove Bowls Club Jan has been a member since 2006 and recalls accompanying John on a bowls weekend in Lismore. She enjoyed what she saw and became a playing member. Jan has played 2nd division level in pennants and has competed in Saturday Divisions Open and has won two badges in the process. Jan is currently a volunteer assistant in the Club’s Office. ON THE LOG WITH SNOZ – Person most admired – my Mother. JAN KROGH Favourite music/songs – attends Coolies Rocks yearly; likes all music except rap; rock ‘n roll rates highly; Buddy Holly songs often entertain the whole street as Jan sings along. Can bash out a tune on the piano. Most Treasured Possession/s Her best mate since she was 17 – one absolutely delightful John and her family. Most Important Lesson in Life Do not take it for granted. Favourite Film – musicals. Jan was born in the Royal Brisbane Hospital in January, one year. She grew up in the Wooloowin area with two sisters and four brothers. Her early education was at the Holy Cross Convent and secondary schooling at Mt St Joseph’s at Nundah. Employment/Personal Jan chose a secretarial/clerical career, firstly in a Transport Department and later to a medical office outlet. At the age of 17 she met the love of her life – and later married the guy. Jan and John have two adult sons and four (so far) grandchildren. Memories of Early Childhood (i) A whack on the back of her hand if she didn’t meet her Dad’s expectations of table manners; (ii) Playing cricket and go-karting in the street with her very protective brothers. Providing she had a good game, Jan was assured of a spot on the interchange bench for the following day’s game of ‘the street’s’ rugby match. Sporting Interests Jan has a keen interest in most sports. She has played netball and tennis. John introduced her to rugby league as he played for Norths at a senior level. The combination of having four brothers and John’s football mates always ensured that Jan had multiple (female) friends around the house. Next 12 months Continue our current lifestyle as we enjoy full retirement and expand into the world of travel, not necessarily overseas. Conclusion Thanks for your participation in our ‘On the Log’ Jan. Good luck for the future and good bowling. …John – your shout. ********************************************** SICK LIST John Armstrong – Hip replacement –Home now and can be found hobbling around. Ferny Grove Bowls, Sports and Community Club Everyone is waiting with baited breath for the draw for Super Challenge and Alex Gow Trophy draws. Who will not be happy!!! October 2015 Edition Editorial Team Comment The following rules of Etiquette were sourced via the Bowls Queensland website and apply to every affiliated club member in Queensland. ’Etiquette: This subject is a major part of the conduct of lawn bowls and has been part of the game since the game began. One definition of the word etiquette is “code of behaviour.” First and foremost adhere to the old cliché. ”Do unto others as you would others do unto you.” Do not behave in any way that would bring you, your club or the game into disrepute. Do not wander around or move about the head when a player is about to deliver a bowl, and particularly do not stand in the line with the boundary pegs. Do not converse loudly whilst a player is about to deliver a bowl. Standing behind the player and shouting compliments or encouragement to a player, or players, on another rink is certainly distracting and should not take place when any player is preparing to deliver a bowl on your rink. Do not intrude onto an adjacent rink. Be courteous at all times. It is customary to invite your opponent to join you in a friendly drink on completion of the game. Always remember that good sportsmanship in relation to your team mates and opponents; in turn this will be reciprocated. It is customary to pick up the mat in any game whenever your opponent has delivered the last bowl of the end. You must not be in the opponents area of play after your bowl comes to rest (this is the head or the mat area). The rule states that the possession of the rink is in the control of your opponent when your bowl comes to rest. The lead in a team game, or opponent in a singles game, is to pick up the jack and hand to their opponent at the start of an end. When you play against an opponent on your own green, remember you are the host and must treat that player and team as guests, be sociable at all times and display a friendly manner. Always be gracious in defeat and humble in victory. Do not blame outside influences for your defeat, such as the green, the weather conditions, your opponent’s lucky shots, the umpire or spectators. No matter how good you are, or think you are, all players have the capabilities of playing well on a given day. Accept the defeat and give credit to your opponent in a sportsman like manner. Do not show your displeasure by being ungracious to your opponent. Be the first to offer your hand in congratulations for a game well played. Ferny Grove Bowls, Sports and Community Club October 2015 Edition When an umpire is requested to decide a measure situation, indicate the bowls in dispute and retire from the area so the umpire can complete his/her job. Accept the decision without displaying signs of disagreement. Ensure you follow the dress regulations. Clubs should have regulations displayed in a prominent position. When you have the services of a marker, it is of utmost importance that you extend your thanks and appreciations for the services rendered, and offer a refreshment on completion of the game. Bowls should not be dropped onto the green. Don’t abuse the privileges of the club. There are many forms of etiquette and the above is an outline of some to help you. Remember bowls is a friendly game. Let the exercise of consideration for others, courtesy and good sportsmanship add charm to a skilful and rewarding sport. As indicated in the introduction, etiquette is mainly about treating one another the way bowlers expect to be treated themselves. Considerate thought and common sense are the keys to acceptable standards. The Editorial Team ******************************************************************************************************************* OK Ladies and Gents On this note, I bow out from editing ITD each month – well almost each month. This also applies to maintaining the MIS (Member Information Spreadsheet} and sending emails as required. My wife has requested that we spend considerably more time touring Australia, this coming year. She has it all planned. First trip early new year. Second trip right in the middle of Super Challenge. Midyear trip at the beginning of Pennants Season. So it goes on - I think everyone will get the idea! I thank those half-dozen members who said, “Well done” and/or “Good job, this month”. I won’t mention names but you know who you are. I hope that the same or better enthusiasm Is shown to the next Editor. Any member interested in either deserted vacated position, come and see me. I will give you exactly the same information that I was given four years ago. I think that I have the original blank sheet of A4 paper. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Of course that includes a safe one.
