Jhalak 2016 || Austin, TX || November 12, 2016 || Registration Packet || Cut the Frills, Bring the Skills
LETTER
Dear Future Jhalak Participant,
The Indian Cultural Association at The University of Texas at Austin would like to thank you for
your interest in the 16th annual Jhalak Bollywood Fusion Dance Competition. Jhalak is unique in that
it is one of the only fusion dance competitions in America that removes production and props from
the judging criteria. We do this to ensure that the best team is chosen based on dance, alone.
Our goal is to host a successful competition that invites teams from around the nation to come
together to showcase the beauty of Bollywood Fusion, their talent, and their love for the art of
dance. We aim to present our teams with a memorable experience and a true taste of Southern
hospitality. At Jhalak, there is no funny business – we respect the time, money, and energy that you
contribute to our competition.
By eliminating the worry or hassle of production or props, we hope to provide teams with more
financial flexibility – Jhalak is one of the most budget-friendly competitions in the circuit. Our
choreography-focused judging criteria ensures that the Jhalak champion will undoubtedly be
known as the best of what this year has to offer.
After years of successful, sold-out shows, Jhalak has become an international event, drawing in
teams from both the US and Canada as candidates. Local UT teams, therefore, are not allowed to
compete, but rather demonstrate their abilities through exhibition performances.
In this packet, you will find registration information, along with important deadlines and details
regarding registration fees, team participant rules, the audition tape guidelines, and much more. If
you have any questions after reading this packet, please feel free to email us at
[email protected].
We appreciate your support as future Jhalak participants, and the entire Jhalak Team and Indian
Cultural Association wishes you the best of luck!
Sincerely,
Paayal Jagada, Akshay Avantsa, Sonya Raghunandhan, and
Surya Suravaram
Jhalak Directors

Jhalak 2016 || Austin, TX || November 12, 2016 || Registration Packet || Cut the Frills, Bring the Skills
COMPETITION FORMAT
As per Jhalak tradition, removing production and props will force teams to challenge themselves
and develop even more intricate, difficult, and thrilling choreography.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines:
No costume changes are allowed. This includes the removal and addition of layers.
o
This gives teams the opportunity to be more detailed and intricate with their
original costumes.
●
No storylines are allowed.
●
Up to 2 voice overs allowed in the mix with a maximum of 5 seconds each. Dialogue will
only be considered if it does not relate to or create a theme. Please contact the Jhalak
Board if you have any inquiries about dialogue.
●
Gimmicks, stunts, and tricks are allowed in your performance, but NOT in your
audition video.
●
Up to 10 lighting cues are permitted.
●
No backdrop, set, stage markers, and/or props are permitted.
o
No props of any kind will be allowed on stage.
o
Stage markers/formation helpers of any kind will not be allowed!
o
Dandiyas/Sapps/Daangs/Chimta/Kaato are allowed, BUT in no way can they be
used to mark formations, be set on the ground as markers, or be used for
gimmick purposes. They are to be used for strictly dance purposes. Upon finishing
the usage of Dandiyas/Sapps/Daangs/Chimta/Kaato, they must be thrown to the
side of the stage. There will be no extra points awarded for successfully using these
items. On the contrary, if the judges spot that they are being used as anything else,
points WILL be deducted as per the judges' opinions. Please contact us if further
clarifications are needed.
●
Routines must be within 4 to 6 minutes.
●
No intro video explaining the theme or performance.
o
Instead, teams will be asked to create a 1-minute introductory video portraying
the team.
We will be selecting 8 teams to compete in Jhalak 2016. We will choose teams that can portray a
high level of technical dance skill and that we believe can entertain the audience. That's it; if you’re
among the best, you’re in!

AUDITION GUIDELINES
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
All teams will be required to submit a video clip of a fusion performance with their current
team for the 2016 - 2017 year.
o We are looking for skill, talent, creativity, style, and personality.
The video must consist of at least ten (10) members of the team. We encourage the full team
to perform for the video.
o All members in the video MUST be present on the day of the show (November
12, 2016) and must be performing. A list of the dancers’ names and their affiliated
team(s) must also be submitted.
The taped clip must be taped explicitly for the purpose of this competition. Tapes of
prior performances will NOT be accepted for the purpose of the audition video. The
audition video must be a new and recent recording of the current team members.
The choreography in your video clip MUST be representative of the choreography you will
perform at Jhalak 2016.
Only one camera angle is permitted for the video. Any professional recording and/or editing
is not permitted. For best viewing, have the camera slightly above eye level, cropped to fit
the entire team, and zoomed in enough to see the details of the choreography. The camera
must be able to show the full body of each performer, and all formations should be visible.
The clip must have good video and audio quality. Audio overlays are allowed and highly
recommended.
The video must be a continuous recording for at least one minute to a maximum of
two minutes. We highly recommend giving us your best two minutes of choreography!
Stunts, gimmicks, and tricks are NOT allowed in the video.
Do not list the team’s name in the video itself. Do not add a text title with your team’s
name on it.
o Please name the file: “Team Name – Jhalak Audition”
o No costumes and props may be used for the videos. Please do not wear any team
or college t-shirt, OR clothing with any text or logos. Do not wear any clothing
material that gives away what team you are. This includes any shirts from other
competitions. Uniform clothing is recommended.
You MUST submit the audition clip, along with Participant IDs, in a Google Drive folder:
o We must be able to access this Google Drive folder and download your submissions.
o Upload your audition video in .wmv, .mp4, .avi, .mov, or .mpg format.
o Upload one PDF file containing copies of IDs for all participants.
o Once both the video and IDs are in the Google Drive folder, attach the link to
the registration form.
We understand that some of these rules are a bit of a hassle, but this ensures that the
audition committee views the video in a blind manner.
o The committee will not know the name or the identity of the team performing or
any of its members.
o The video will be judged solely on talent, skill, and personality of the team.
o Your team name, reputation, gender, or location does not mean anything. We
want talent!
