Choosing Tournament Times
At the Pembroke Golf Club, tournaments are available throughout the week and on the weekend. With league
night commitments on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do not book events on those days. All other days are available,
pending any scheduled events.
There are three types of times for tournaments:
SHOT-GUN
This is where all players start (and end) at the same time. Each team starts on a different hole and everyone plays
at once. This is a format that is available for groups of 80 or more players.
REVERSE SHOT-GUN
For groups less than 80 players where you wish everyone to start and end at the same time, this format may be for
you. A reverse shot-gun works the same as a regular shot-gun in that all players start on different holes and
everyone plays at once. Instead of using all 18 holes, you use a fewer number of holes.
TEE TIMES
For smaller groups, or if you prefer to accommodate players for starting/ending times, you can schedule groups by
tee-time. This works for larger tournaments to maximize the number of people who can play, and to allow for
different te
New To Hosting An Event? No Problem!
Just because you're not experienced in hosting an event doesn't mean you can't have one! Part of our service is
helping people organize events. We will meet with you, explain how things work and help you ensure your event is
a success.
And, if you're looking to increase the size of your event, we can help you organize that as well. We work with
people every season in starting or increasing events so let us help you.
We have some additional helpful information in the rest of this package to help you with understand events.
Types of Golf Events
There are many formats that you USE for your event. Here is a brief explanation of some of your options.
SCRAMBLE OR BEST BALL
This is the most popular format for golf tournaments and is good for golfers and non-golfers. Everyone hits their
ball and then the group (usually four people), chooses the best ball of the four. All golfers move their ball to that
"best ball" and hit again from there. You are always choosing the best shot of four.
ALTERNATE SHOT
In this format, individuals on the team take turns hitting the shots. If there are four players on the team, player A
hits the first shot, player B hits the second shot and so on. The cycle repeats. Another easy format for golfers and
non-golfers. This works for smaller groups with teams of 2 or 3 players, as well as larger groups of 4 players.
INDIVIDUAL STROKE PLAY | TEAM BEST SCORE ON THE HOLE
This is an option for golfers with playing experience and can be used individually or as a team. Individually, golfers
play their own game and turn their scores in at the end of the round. As a team, individuals can play their own
game but the team counts the lowest individual score on the hole as part of their team score. If you have new or
non-golfers in the field, this is not a preferred option.
Awarding Prizes
Prizes can be awarded in a variety of ways, depending on how many prizes you have and the goal of your event.
AWARDED BY SCORE
You can award prizes based on the lowest score. You can choose prizes for each person,
or you can have them choose their own (also called "pick of the table.")
RANDOM CHOICE
You can pull team names out of a hat for prizes.
NUMBERED PRIZES
NO PRIZES
You can give each prize a number and then players pick numbers out of a hat and win
the corresponding prize.
Your event doesn't have to include prizes - it can just be a day out for people to enjoy.
Especially if you're hosting a family event, you can simply enjoy a great meal after the
round and recognize the score verbally if you choose.
When To Have An Event
TIME OF YEAR
You can have a golf tournament any time of year, though in our experience there are times of year that
allows for the best way to maximize participation in your event. An event in the early part of the season
is attractive to golfers who are eager to be playing. Early season also means you are one of the first golf
tournaments that people commit to, both for sponsorship and as participants. While there is some risk
with the weather, your timing can pay off with increased interest in your event.
Peak season events, running June-August, can cost more, but also provide a more summer-fun
atmosphere for your event. While weather is often on your side in peak season, it can be challenging to
have a full tournament field with summer vacation. If you are new to having a golf tournament, or you
wish to move your dates, you may want to test the peak season timing with potential players.
The Fall season is a great time of year to have golf events, and it is the least-booked time for
tournaments. The golf course looks amazing in the Fall, and the weather is usually dependable. While
the event is at the tail end of the golf season, you can capture the interest of golfers as other sports and
hobbies have not usually started.
DAY OF WEEK
If you are hosting a corporate golf tournament where you want business owners or employees to
attend, you will have greater success holding that tournament on a weekday. If you are hosting a family
or non-corporate event, you can have a successful event in the afternoons, evenings or weekends,
depending on who you are inviting.
Full Event Site
It is easier to run your event if your golf, meal and prizes are all hosted on site. When golfers complete
their round, being able to mingle in the dining room or on the patio is part of the enjoyable event
experience, as opposed to having to get in their vehicles and go to another location. People are more
relaxed and tend to have a more positive experience from your event if it requires less work on their
part.
From an organizer's perspective, one site is definitely preferred. Pembroke Golf Club offers the inclusive
one-site experience. Our menu options follow.
