5G: the “Nervous System” of Digital Economy and Society
• 5G will be the ubiquitous, ultra-high
bandwidth
and
low
latency
infrastructure hooking the tremendous
number of terminals and devices at
the edge with the Cloud;

• 5G will be “the infrastructure” allowing to pursue new service
scenarios, creating a new value by integrating diverse domains:
– e.g., Future Internet Open Platforms, Cloud Computing, Cloud Robotics,
Internet of Things, Big Data, ...);
• SDN and NFV are two of the key enabling technologies.

Impacts of current technology trends…
• Integrating of Cloud/IT and Networks
resources:
– end-to-end platforms executing any network
function (e.g., L2-L7) and services as
“applications”
(on

of
VMs,
Software-defined * and Virtualization of Functions
dynamically allocated and moved on the H/W
of the infrastructure);

• Blurring the border between the Network
and what connects to the Network, i.e.,
the end-Users Terminals:
– any terminal, devices, machines, smart
things, robots…will look like edge nodes to
provide end-Users with “any services”.

Which is the way…?
• Goal: exploit a end-to-end platform hooking the terminals, to the
network, to the Cloud…as a fluid virtual environment of services
• Where are we starting from ?
– Know How and achievements of past and on-going projects;
–Software-defined

– A very rich asset of H/W and S/W systems for building the 5G !
• How federating all these Experimental Facilities ?
Telecom Italia - All rights reserved
– How “operating” the federation as an end-to-end platform ?
• How creating a real impact ?
– Concrete use cases, solving real problems;
– Entrepreneurs and SME direct involvements;
– Users should be the “Evaluators”.

An OS of OSes for EU Experimental Facilities
Why an OS ? An OS is a powerful enabler to create and
develop new ecosystems and to have an impact
• Since 2005, Smartphone OS has been considered a priority in the
US. And this has created a significant industrial impact in US !

Concept
• A distributed 5GOS for operating “end-to-end” federated
experimental facilities, from terminals to networks to clouds:
– 5GOS should be open-source, with a distributed architecture
spanning from terminals, to network nodes, to Cloud resources;
– 5GOS provides all services expected from an OS, including hardware
abstraction, low-level device/terminal/node control, implementation of
commonly-used functions, message-passing between processes,
and orchestration/management capabilities;
– 5GOS also provides tools and libraries for obtaining, building,
writing, and running applications across multiple physical resources.

Cognition as a Service: a next “opportunity” for 5G OS
• The “Cognition” controlling with 5G a selfdriving car, or a mobile robot in a farm, could
become a “service”;
• There are different levels of requirements, e.g.:
– Driving in a known space “geometry” (known maps);
– Reacting to (unexpected) obstacles or situations;
• “Reaction Time” should allow a proper control;
• “Cognition” is made of sensing, processing
transmission and actuating;
• Fast reactions require not only a lot of
processing (Cloud) but also an ultra-low
latency 5G Network (role of Optics) !

Conclusions
• 5G as an end-to-end platform hooking the terminals, to the network,
to the Cloud… as a fluid virtual environment of services;
• Starting from:
– Know How and achievements of past and on-going projects;
Software-defined * and Virtualization of Functions
– federation of existing Experimental Facilities for 5G in Europe.
• A 5GOS to “operate” the federated Experimental Facilities;

• Creating a real impact with:
– Concrete use cases (seeds of ecosystems)
– Entrepreneurs and SME direct involvements;
– Users should be the “Evaluators” !
