PERSONAL STATEMENT
Ensuring that all patients, irrespective of their socioeconomic status and health literacy levels,
can be engaged and supported when making healthcare decisions remains an unresolved
challenge. My career is driven by my belief – supported by evidence and ethics – that all patients
should be engaged and supported when making healthcare decisions. My training as a health
psychologist and health services researcher, combined with solid quality improvement and
change management experience in the French and British public sector have prepared me for an
international career focused on improving patient engagement, communication in healthcare and
addressing healthcare disparities.
I have authored 37 peer-reviewed publications (12 as first author and six as senior author), four
book chapters, and one book. I have also been invited to present my research at regional,
national and international events. I have taught Psychology, Research methods, Advanced
Communication Skills, Shared Decision-Making and Evidence-Based Medicine to undergraduate
and postgraduate Psychology and Medical students as well as health professionals. My
overarching career goal is to conduct applied health services research that influences clinical
practice and improves patients’ outcomes, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, literacy
level and abilities.
My work as Faculty in the UK and USA is exploring how to leverage the use of pictures to engage
underserved and low literacy populations, to reduce healthcare disparities. Since becoming
Faculty at Dartmouth College in 2014, I have conceptualized and developed the Picture Option
Grid, which is now being evaluated in a PCORI funded comparative effectiveness trial (20162019). In the UK, I have been successful in obtaining funding from the National Institute for
Healthcare Research to undertake a randomized controlled feasibility trial of a pictorial selfmanagement intervention among people with intellectual disabilities. The importance of this
study has been recognized nationally and presented in the House of Lords in the UK in October
2016.
Over the past decade, my research has also focused on designing and evaluating patient decision
aids that are grounded in theory. As part of my PhD, I developed a user-centric, theory-based
interactive online decision aid for amniocentesis testing (AmnioDex). Between 2008 and 2012, I
published six peer-reviewed publications (five of them as lead author, and highly cited), which
explored the theoretical basis of decision aids and assessed the integration of relevant
theoretical constructs into the development of usable and accessible interventions. Since 2010, I
have contributed to designing, evaluating, disseminating and promoting fast and frugal
encounter decision aids that facilitate a dialogue between patients and clinicians. I have
published six peer-reviewed articles related to the development and evaluation of Option Grid
and presented at various national and international conferences and seminars (included invited
oral presentations, plenaries, and panel discussions). In parallel, I have contributed to the
development and adaptation of the International Patient Decision Aids Standards Instrument
(IPDASi). Finally, my research program aims to address barriers to shared decision making from
the clinician’s perspective.

Over the past eleven years, I have taught (as a lecturer and module leader) Psychology, Research
methods, Advanced Communication Skills, Shared Decision-Making and Evidence-Based Medicine.
I have been responsible for teaching medium to large groups of undergraduate and postgraduate
Psychology and Medical students in tutorials, practicums, lectures and workshops. Using
innovative approaches, contemporary research examples and case studies, I have demonstrated
high quality pedagogic practice, solid academic guidance and a constant effort to implement and
disseminate good practice. Over the past four years, I have mentored 14 undergraduate medical
and Psychology students, and 10 MSc or MPH students. Since 2013, I have supervised three
postdoctoral students and currently mentor two PhD students as primary advisor. I have always
received positive feedback on my teaching and supervisory skills, and have published 14 peerreviewed articles with eight of my mentees.
