Tue 28 Feb | 9am – 12pm Presentation Skills for Non-native Speakers of English (2 Part Course) Part 1 PART 1 Tue 28 Feb | 2pm – 5pm Developing Leadership Skills This workshop will enable participants to expand their knowledge and understanding of leadership through the exploration of leadership attributes, styles and behaviours, as well as by taking part in practical leadership exercises. In Part 1 of this workshop, it is designed to build confidence and improve the effectiveness of non-native speakers when presenting about their research in English. Note: Part 2 is compulsory on Fri, 3 March (Refer below). Fri 3 Mar | 2pm – 3.30pm Part 2 In Part 2 of the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to present a topic of their choice, and receive specific guidance and feedback on their presentation. PART 2 Wed 1 Mar | 10am – 12pm Effective Communication Thu 2 Mar | 9am – 12pm Maximising Your Skills for Success in Your Academic Career This practical workshop aims to equip participants with the confidence and the tools to network effectively and perform better. This workshop will provide guidance on how to maximise the value of your PhD experience for a future academic career. Thu 2 Mar | 2pm – 5pm Creative Thinking for Doctoral Researchers This workshop will develop understanding of creativity and the skills of creative thinking. It will be particularly useful for students from a technical or scientific background. Fri 3 Mar | 9am – 12pm Critical Thinking for Doctoral Researchers This workshop will develop awareness and skills of critical thinking. About the Speaker | Ms Elaine Walsh With a background as a Chartered Engineer in aerospace engineering, Elaine is a freelance soft skills development consultant and an expert in doctoral education and career management. For more than ten years, Elaine led the team responsible for postgraduate professional development at Imperial College London, supporting more than 6000 graduate students in realising both academic and career goals. During this time, the innovation and impact of her team’s work were recognised by two national awards and resulted in numerous invitations to partner with internationally leading universities including NTU, HKU, MIT, and Tsinghua University. Elaine continues to research on doctoral education issues including the evaluation of skills development courses, the wellbeing of researchers and the role of creativity in scientific research.
