Technical Coordinator’s Playback Notes
Standard, Quality Check & Backup
Your GLS Playback set is authored in the standard of your nation (PAL). Be sure to watch each disk in its
entirety using the exact same DVD player that you’ll be using as your primary playback deck. The use of
a live backup DVD (playing 3 to 5 seconds behind the primary) is a requirement of the GLS. We
recommend using a different brand name than your primary deck. Refer to the Technical Coordinator’s
Handbook for more guidelines regarding making sure you always have a backup should there be a
problem with the playback of your primary DVD.
Audio
Previously, we provided GLS content as a “split track” with the stage on the left (channel 1) and the
ambience on the right (channel 2). The international executive team has chosen to eliminate this option
(and the confusion that it sometimes created) and provide a simple, “dual mono” audio recording. The
audio on channels 1 and 2 are identical & only one of the channels needs to be connected to your sound
console.
Aspect Ratio
For the highest quality possible, the content on this disc set is provided in 16:9 (anamorphic) format. The
discs in your DVD playback set content a 16:9 “flag” which is the indicator to your DVD player to
compress the image vertically if you are playing back on a 4:3 television, monitor, or projector.
If you are watching on a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, and the DVD player is set up correctly, (in other words,
it KNOWS that it’s connected to a 16:9 screen) it will not make any adjustments to the image, and the
video will fill the screen correctly.
If your image fills a 4:3 screen from top to bottom (if the image is stretched vertically) or the image is “too
wide” (stretched horizontally) then you need to adjust a setting. Refer to the Technical Coordinator’s
Handbook for pointers on how to do this. In summary:
Most GLS sites will be using a 4:3 screen and 4:3 projector. If the DVD player is set up to output
an image to a 4:3 screen, it’ll detect the 16:9 flag that we’ve included on these discs and re-size
the image properly. Your image will appear correctly (widescreen) across the center of your
screen, with black bars at the top and bottom. This is normal.
If your DVD player is set to provide an image to a 4:3 projector, but your projector is actually a
16:9 projector (or set to “compression” mode to emulate a 16:9 projector) then your image will be
double compressed. Either the compression on the DVD player, or the compression on the
projector must be disabled.
If, through the menu settings, your DVD player is set up to provide an image to a 16:9 projector,
then it will not vertically re-size the image. It will pass through the image with no adjustment—the
intent being that the projector will properly size the image for viewing.
Be sure to watch your discs using the exact same equipment (DVD player, projector) in advance of the
GLS, so that you can make any necessary adjustments.
Slates and Countdown
The slates and countdown have been providing for you and your production teams to carefully time their
transitions. At no time should the slate or countdown be seen by your GLS attendees. Advance the DVD
to the two seconds of black between the countdown and the content and hit “pause”. You’ll be ready for a
smooth transition into each session with a single lighting, audio, and video cue. DVD players with onscreen mute (as listed in the Technical Coordinator’s Handbook) are desirable so that the “play” icon
does not appear on the screen.
Notes are included on the menus, and you’ll see that chapter points have been liberally included on the
DVD for rehearsal purposes. A professional DVD player (such as those listed in the Technical
Coordinator’s Handbook) will allow you to navigate your discs with ease, but for those sites with limited
playback equipment options, these chapter points will help expedite rehearsals.
