Community Concussion Information Workshop Sports Medicine Australia in conjunction with HeadSafe are presenting 3 workshops across regional NSW to provide the community with information on the effects of concussion. These workshops are free to attend and will be held on the following dates:11th September 7:30pm at Wests Diggers Kable Avenue Tamworth 25th September 7:30pm at Newcastle No2 Sportsground Smith St Newcastle West 16th October 7:30pm at CSU Bathurst Building 1411 Room 240 http://www.csu.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/000 3/37542/csu-bathurst.pdf This one-hour workshop focuses on concussion injuries in sport and the management of return to play protocol. Topics include: •The definition of concussion •Common causes •Signs and symptoms •Assessment •Game day management •Specific sporting policies •Return to play guidelines The keys messages of the night are:5Rs of Concussion Recognise Look for signs and symptoms of suspected concussion such as: Removal Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM PLAY and is not to return to play or train on the day of the injury. If in doubt, sit them out! Referral Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be medically assessed (by a registered medical doctor) as soon as possible after the injury. Rest Physical and cognitive rest (i.e. no television, video games, computer) is important to allow the brain to recover. Return Players should not return to playing/training until a written medical clearance has been received from a medical doctor.
