Purpose of the Job
 To plan, prepare and deliver appropriate play activities within the family support
groups provided by the scheme, including facilitating a play environment which
encourages the development of parent/child and child/child interaction appropriate
to the child’s age, ability and cultural background.
 To assist in the planning, preparation for and delivery of the family support groups
under the guidance of the group leader and senior co-ordinator.
Main Responsibilities/Duties
General
 Be familiar with and work in accordance with the ethos and policies and procedures
of Home-Start Perth including the Child Protection, Health and Safety and Equal
Opportunities Policies and actively promote inclusion, anti-bullying and diversity.
 To promote the support and services offered by Home-Start Perth.
Child Care
 Work as part of the Home-Start Perth team, alongside other Home-Start Perth staff
and, if appropriate, volunteers to support the family groups.
 To plan, prepare and deliver (including setting up and clearing away) quality
experiences through providing:
a) a safe, stimulating and caring environment appropriate to the needs of children
aged 0 to 4 years.
b) a wide variety of play activities appropriate to the developmental needs of the
attending children which will enable them to develop their social, emotional,
cognitive and physical skills.
 To plan, purchase, prepare and serve healthy snacks as appropriate to the project.
 To ensure that all necessary documents and records are maintained as required by
Home-Start Perth and funding bodies.

 Communicate effectively and sensitively with adults and children attending the
family groups.
 To build and maintain good working relationships with parents, volunteers and
staff, including those of other agencies.
 Plan ahead and advise the Family Support Worker of materials and equipment
required for play, within the budget.
 Maintain strict confidentiality of information concerning the families attending the
family groups.
 Report any Child Protection concerns to the Family Support Worker.
Health and Safety
 Assist the Family Support Worker to ensure that all Health and Safety requirements
at family groups are met.
 Prepare the room, toys and play materials to provide a safe environment for the
family groups.
 At the end of each session ensure that the room is tidy and the toys and other
equipment stored safely.
 Assist the Family Support Worker to keep attendance, children’s accident and other
records as agreed with the Senior Co-ordinator regarding the family groups.
 Support the Family Support Worker to ensure risk assessments are carried out and
fully recorded for all trips and internal and external activities.
Training
 To participate in supervision and take part in relevant training and group meetings
as appropriate, in order to ensure continuous personal and professional
development and practice.
The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that fall within the nature
of the role and responsibilities of the post as detailed above.
The job description reflects the major tasks to be carried out

changing scheme needs and circumstances. Such reviews
