THIS WEEK’S GAMES...
The Northern Michigan University Wildcats (11-15-4, 9-11-2 CCHA)
will take on the Michigan State Spartans (12-14-4, 8-12-2 CCHA)
at Munn Ice Arena in a pair of Central Collegiate Hockey Association games on Friday and Saturday, February 11-12. On Friday
(Feb. 11) the puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Comcast. Saturday (Feb. 12) night’s game is scheduled
to be played at 5:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox
Sports Detroit Plus.
After a winless weekend at home against Laker Superior
State, NMU is on a four game losing streak. Saturday’s (Feb. 5)
shutout loss to the Lakers was the first time the Wildcats were
shutout in conference play since losing to Miami, 4-0, on October
22, 2010. NMU was shut out this season (Nov. 27) against Bemidji
State 3-0.
The Wildcats are 25-32-3 all-time against the Spartans,
13-10-1 at home, 8-18-2 away, and 4-4-0 at neutral sites. In Walt

2-2 (SOL) on Friday (Oct. 24) and lost 2-0 on Saturday (Oct. 25).
MSU was ranked fourth in the CCHA preseason polls and currently

this season. Legendary coach and former NMU head coach Rick
Comley, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the

seasons and is one of just five coaches to surpass the 700-win
plateau. He has recorded a 182-134-39 record in his MSU tenure.
Comley ranks among the top five coaches all-time in wins and top
three among active coaches and led NMU to their 1991 National

games (18.8 penalty minutes/game). NMU has allowed the most
goals (91) in the CCHA with 47 of those goals coming on the opponent’s power play. The NMU power play unit scores 17.2% of the
time which is the fourth best rate in the CCHA. NMU is averaging
2.20 goals per game and just 23.3 shots on goal per game. Tyler
Gron leads the ‘Cats in goals (12), assists (14), and points (26).

their two-goal lead through two periods played slowly
slipped away as the Pioneers scored five unanswered

went on to score a goal from Andrew Fernandez and Maltese that tied the game 2-2. With all of the efforts that the

2010-2011 Perani Cup...
For two years (2000-02) Kyle was an
assistant coach with the National Hockey
League’s New York Rangers under coach
Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general
manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton,
brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach
of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton
Bulldogs, the Oilers’ top affiliate club, from 199800. Kyle’s other NHL experience came with the
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1996-98) under Ron
Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark
Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya
and Teemu Selanne.
His other professional coaching positions
were with the AHL’s Baltimore Bandits (199596), the International Hockey League’s San
Diego Gulls (1994-95) and the Western Hockey
League’s Seattle Thunderbirds (1992-94).
Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after
transferring from Boston College. He captained
the 1980 and ’81 Wildcat squads that advanced
to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85
games for the ‘Cats and scored 31 goals, with
59 assists for 90 points. Following graduation,
he became a graduate assistant coach under
Comley and was promoted to an assistant coach
in 1982, a position he held until 1992. Kyle
was the program’s top assistant in 1991 when
Northern won the NCAA I national title.
He graduated from NMU in 1981 with a
bachelor’s degree in physical education. Kyle
attended graduate school at Northern where
he took a graduate level curriculum in exercise
physiology.
An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle
was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo for Team
USA, which finished fourth at the 2001 World
Championships in Germany, and under Wilson
for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy.
He also was a coach with the 1992 and ’93 U.S.
Junior National Teams, the former which won
the bronze medal – the highest finish ever by
an American squad, under the older format, and
one of only three U.S. teams to ever medal at
the World Championships. He was the assistant
coach of the national junior squad under Kevin
Constantine in 1991.
Kyle, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and his wife,
Ann, have four children: two daughters, Quinn
and Erin; and two sons, Evan and Walt.
The 2010-11 season marks the 10th year of the
Perani Cup Three Stars, which is awarded following the conclusion of each CCHA regular-season
game. Players from each school earn points
throughout the season each time they are named
a “star of the game” (5 points for 1st star, 3 points
for 2nd star and 1 point for 3rd star). At the end
of the season, the CCHA will crown a Perani Cup
champion as well as honor individual winners
from each school. Following are the Perani Cup
standings for Northern Michigan:

Wildcat bench with a 4-1 win at Michigan Tech on
the night of Oct. 5, 2002. He has led the ‘Cats to
Joe Louis Arena and the CCHA Championships
in seven of his eight seasons. During the
2009-10 season he led the 'Cats to the CCHA
Championship game and the NCAA Tournament
which was the first time since 1999 for both.
