Spring Lake Police Department Traffic Officer Maynard Smith Officer Smith brings eight (8) years of Police experience to the Spring Lake Police Department. Before deciding to become a Police officer, he worked various jobs but nothing quite suited him. He knew he wanted something more. Although he had never seriously considered Police work before, after a ride-a-long with a cousin with the Cumberland County Sheriff, Officer Smith found his calling. Drawn to Spring Lake by the opportunities set forth by Chief McDuffie, he realized that the force being built was one he wanted to be a part of; one he would fit in with. He realizes that a Police Officer wears many hats when performing his job; sometimes he is just a Police Officer, sometimes he is a firefighter, a social worker, a psychologist, a marriage counselor, a referee, a parent, a friend and the list goes on. But he never forgets that he is here to serve the public. Although the politics of the job can be challenging at times, getting to help, especially children and senior citizens makes up for it. To him, there is nothing better than a smile when the task at hand has been completed. It is the little things that are most gratifying and makes his job worthwhile. Officer Smith holds several certifications over and above basic law enforcement training some of which include Field Training, Radar certification, High Speed Pursuit and First Line supervision Management. He strongly wishes to pursue Criminal Investigations Certification in the near future. In talking with him, you realize that his dedication to the job itself and the support he has for the Chief, Captain, his fellow officers and the vision of the Spring Lake Police Department as it is structured today make him an asset to the force. He is working hard to help make positive strides in the public’s perception of the Department and understands that building the public’s trust back is a priority. He realizes that all residents need to be proud and confident in the Spring Lake Police Department, in the duties they perform and they need to realize that the Police do more than just lock people up; they are here to make people feel safe and to serve them in the best interest of their own protection while upholding the laws of the Town. If he could change one misconception about Police Officers it would be that not all officers are corrupt and if you spent time with him, you would know he truly is one of the good guys. He wants to remind everyone that Police Officers are just human beings; they wear uniforms and badges, they drive patrol cars but they are not above the law. They are just men and women who choose to serve the public and in the case of Officer Smith, serves proudly. 300 Ruth Street Spring Lake, NC 28390 Emergency Calls - 911 Non-emergency calls - (910) 436-0350 or (910) 436-0351 Fax - (910) 436-4081 Administrative Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Brought to you by the: Spring Lake Police Department Troy McDuffie, Chief After Hours and Weekends: Phones transfer to Cumberland County Dispatch
